This video is incredible for so many reasons. I miss Chessie and Piki! These were golden days of railroading.. horns, locomotives, paint schemes and bells.
Cool video. Man, just look at all the fallen flags road names on those freight cars; Chessie System, L&N, Illinois Central, Penn Central, Conrail, Western Pacific, SCL, Frisco, man, they're all there.
I enjoy all of your videos! Brings back memories of watching Chessie trains run through Midland, MI on the Ludington-Saginaw portion of Chessie System!
Nope no welded rail on the L&N in 1982- 1992 while L&N was around until 1996-1998 the jointed rail is no longer around unless if the tracks are operated by short line railroads if you don't know what WTNN RR stands for i will tell you if anybody want to know what WTNN RR stands for.
welded rail was not even around in 1982 when two rails join together thats called jointed rail a track without joints is called welded rail all railroads today have now gone to welded rails except the short line railroad.
@shifta65 Flat spots also make that sound. When the train brakes hard the wheels slip causing flat spots, and a square wheel makes sounds when it "rolls"
I also have a collection of EMD videos (how to) for the RR engineer on there locos over the years. I would be happy to share these at some point. But if your a fan of FEROMEX or TFM-KCS forget it. I wont give spit to a fan of Busheconomics. You gotta love America and buy Union!
A recent issues of Model Railroader said that no more than 30 powered axles (five SD's) are allowed to be at the head of a train, but I can't remember the reason...maybe something to do with safety because the article also discussed how the cars in the train had to be arranged. For example, hazardous material couldn't be closer to the locomotives than five cars away, empty cars SHOULD be towards the back of the train whenever possible, and long trains are easier to control than short trains.
When I lived in Colorado and Wyoming I asked the Union Pacific and BNSF guys almost the same question about power moves going up, down and through the Rocky Mountains. They said they never have more than five locomotives up front.
Interesting my dad retired from CSX, C&O, chessie system. 39 years! Engineer. I remeber he told me that Conrail dialed in power while he was always given way to less power for the given train. Interesting, becuse he had a rep for being on time and only a few minor derails in the yard over all those years. I am privilaged to learn from him and a lot of other RRs who get together every friday. My dad could bring a long train to a stop on a dime.
OMG!!! DID YOU REALIZE THE RARE AUTORACKS IN THAT TRAIN??? Not to mention the power...but you had an RI blue rack first out (yea, painted out, but still Rock) ICG< and a few other "classics" WOW!!!! NICE WORK!!!
ha, crew probably hated the walk back to the WM engine to move em the other way. when i conducted for conrail the engineer would always idle the engine we were in and let the other units do the pullin, quieter that way.
You can't replace footage like this. All of those roads are now CSX and most of that power is either still in service, retired, or getting really close to it.
the first 4 locos were running, the others were probably being hauled back to the shop for repairs. I should know because I am an electrician for Norfolk Southern. Federal law requires all train to operate no more than 24 live axles on the front end.
was that first train looooooooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnngggggggggggggggggggggggg you must of got sleepy

Why the clickety-clack sound of each car and locomotive? Aren't they riding on continuous weld rail?
shifta65 2 years ago
Probably an unwelded joint at the Germantown location.

Were ALL EIGHT locomotives in this video powered up or were some of them just being pulled to a new location?
