ahhhh, so good to see a real singer. I really enjoyed Go West in the 80s/90's....I agree with ruffian, this is how it's done. The King is dead, long live Peter Cox....
@grubsmum - how do you know? Are you a fan? I've been in music for 30 years plus and work for Van Damme Cable as MI specialist - I get to work and meet lots of interesting people. I have seen Pete on interviews and he comes across as such a normal bloke - no angles, agendas or ego. Rare in this game. Cheers Andy
I remember the first time I heard this in concert, before Dancing on the Couch had been released, I knew then that this voice would be around for years!! Sadly a very under rated talent, Bonnie Raitt would be lucky to duet with Peter!
This is wonderful......Pete's vocals are amazing...you should here him sing it live now....the timbre of his voice has changed and it is FANTASTIC.....thanks for posting :-)
I have been a fan of GoWest since they debuted their album in the US back in '86. I LOVE their sound and can't wait for their new CD to come out soon!
HOLY SHOE!!! This is taken from their "Live at the Hammersmith Odeon", where did you find it?? I have the vhs but it's getting quite old now, image and sound are messy...
And it doesn't exist in dvd...
This is one of the best liveshows EVER, the band is amazing, guitarist Alan Murphy and bassist Jaz Lochrie must be from another galaxy!
this song is amazing! i loved it! go west did an awesome job performing this track. it is my favorite song from the dancing off the couch album. it's got a bluesy jazzy feel to it. if i had a father who loved me and was in my life and he, you know, passed away, i'd play this cool song at his funeral.i dunno..this song really does sound like a loving tribute song to someone very influential in your life...
I used to play this song over and over when I bought the album, Dancing On the Couch. I loved the way Peter sounded and I thought Kate Bush was brilliant singing back up.
Can anyone kindly send me the MP3's of this Album Dancing on the couch- my tape was used so much it got chewed up & 'flipped' I cant get this album anywhere:-S
This was a pretty good album. Don't forget about Chinese Whispers, and my personal favorite; From Baltimore to Paris.... Thanks for the post.. There's nothing like the 80's.
This song in the U.S. was a part of Go West's "Dancing on the Couch" record. I still have that cassette tape that was originally released in 1987. This song was never a single here, but it's one of my favorites. Incidentally, Kate Bush sang background vocals on that track. This record, along with their self-titled debut, were this band's best. They had some good songs in the 90's, but their 80's music was the best. LONG LIVE THE 80'S!!!!!
thank you !! i always knew it was kate bush on backing vocals !! just as i told everyone !!! and was laughed at !!! i also said that george micheal sung the backing track on elton jonh's track ! nikita !!! ? at the end of the song ???
Wow! I remember this song. What year did this come out? (80?81?82?) Thanks for posting this beautiful piece of music. I always wished I understood the cryptic lyrics, though. A beautiful tune nonetheless!
I can't think of any 21st century popstar who can sing like this. I want it to be 1987 now...

A very good singer accompanied by musicians playing the top of their trade.
Something so called pop stars cant do in this age off quick hits.

@bassman1811 He's still writing and performing as part of Go West, along with Richard Drummie. He's also released several solo albums.

I have this full performance on a VHS called 'The Runaway Train Tour - 1987'. Anyway, Peter Cox says "this song's about Edward G. Robinson" !!
Whether he's being dry or not .... BTW great piano by Pete Adams & bass by Jaz Lochrie.

Peter Cox has such a great and unique-sounding
voice. He strains a bit when he transitions
into his falsetto voice, but this actually
ends up adding to the passion of his singing.
Comparing him to George Michael, as so many
seem to be doing, is like apples and oranges.
George Michael's "Cowboys and Angels" may be
a 'smoother song' than this one but the sheer
grittiness of Peter Cox carries this song to
at least the same level. IMHO
rredhawk 4 years ago
Come and see him live! It's a truly amazing night! See the Peter Cox or Go West websites for forthcoming dates. See you there!

Thanks. Heard this song on smooth jazz stations in early 90s.
Assumed it was yet another tribute to the late Elvis Presley,
"the king" of rock and roll, who died 10 years prior to the
release of this song. Hard to tell by the lyrics, but the
second line reminds me that even in 1987 there were people
who thought Elvis was still alive, prompting Cox to assure
them by saying "no doubt about it"--that "the king" (Elvis?)
is indeed dead? Who is this "king" that this song is
referring to?
rredhawk 4 years ago
That's the same thing I thought the song was referring to as well.
