If the Union had been unable to defeat the Confederacy in open battle, they would've just starved cities and strongholds into submission using siege warfare (as proven at both Vicksburg and Petersburg). Even if the South had managed to retain independence. Slavery was already a failing economic system and they wouldn't been able to compete with the industrial North, and would likely have eventually rejoined the Union anyway.

One thing strange about Jackson not mentioned in the vid is he was sort of a Hypochondriac or health anxiety. If the Union had been unable to defeat the Confederacy in open battle, they would've just starved cities and strongholds into submission using siege warfare (as proven at both Vicksburg and Petersburg). Even if the South had managed to retain independence. Slavery was already a failing economic system and they wouldn't been able to compete with the industrial North, and would likely have eventually rejoined the Union anyway.

The majority of the soldiers fighting for the South were doing so not to defend the practice of slavery or continue to deny the rights of the black man, but to rid their home States (not necessarily their Confederacy) of the Northern invaders. It was considered to them as a second revolution, and was not about slavery. Only Lincoln introduced slavery into the war when he needed a political victory.

The real effect of the Civil War was to kill that Southern God. That God that EVERY Southern leader said ordained slavery, and would lead them to victory. The God of slavery, of pain to blacks, of cruelty to women and children - of terror --- that God died when Lee surrendered. The South no longer prays to that God.
