I find it impossible not to warm to Ms Fabbricini. See that look she gives him at the start! An Italian woman wronged! She is saying 'I am a wronged women, but I forgive you. Mind you, you have behaved dreadfully to me. In fact you owe me big time and it will take a lot of grovelling to compensate.'
Her acting ability differentiates her from others, who may as well be singing for the radio. She draws you in and engages your emotions.
Verdi's contribution also needs noting. Others will have their favourites, but for me there are are only three premier league composers: Bach, Beethoven and Verdi. Others such as Mozart and Bizet have their sublime moments, but also their dull hours.
I like Miss Fabbricini's style. She injects passion into her singing without sacrificing musicality. I prefer this to the more precise, but less emotional style practised by some other singers.
Muti emphasises the ensemble nature of this piece and makes it less of a Violetta solo aria than other directors.
