Growing up, I miss how Bet and Video Jukebox used to play videos like these. Not to mention, if you didn't have Cable- you could stay up late on friday and Saturday nights and watch Frday Night Videos and shows like Pump It Up ! lol Much Respect!!!!
By her being on next level plateau i bought her and Ultramagnetic's tapes at about the same time. Plus red alerts we can do this tape, yeah Chicago knows about real hip hop. I recognize some of the same locations in this and ego trippin's video. if i'm wrong the someone from NY will let me know. lmao
I love classic hip-hop battles. It was is and shall continue to be what made hip-hop the best. It brought out some of the best material. I mean think of LL vs. Moe Dee, BDP vs. Juice Crew, and of course Lyte vs. Antoinette. Classics!!!
whether Antoinette wrote her songs or had a ghost writer, you cannot deny her delivery and flow. I mean come on, half the industry have ghostwriters from pop, R&B and hip-hop ..it's nothing new. Antoinette is dope!
@funkbrother216 yessirrrr funk brother. Lyte crushed her but looked kinda butchy back then ( she lookin fly these days tho). Antoinette was lookin GUHHHHHD! LoL
Antoinette the greatest ever. I met MC LYTE in 1990 and told her then and I ran into Lyte a couple a months ago and told her again in her face. Lyte just laughed because she knew A.N.T. gave her the business. My son laughed when I asked MC Lyte who won that battle. Female Rakim for real. This girl called herself 'The Gangstress' before N.W.A. did. She called herself the 'The Outlaw' before 2 Pac did. She called herself 'The Boss' before Yukmouth ever did...That's revolutionary and innovative!
Even though other folks were writing some of her songs,Without a doubt; She is the female "twin" to Rakim! They sound so much alike that they complement each other.Image if both of them had did a song together. The Gangstress and The Microphone Fiend. Talk about Bonnie and Clyde! That's too overwhelming. The skulls of hip hop heads would explode!!
@IcePda1nonly really? i have been trying to buy this song online why isnt it on iTunes or anywhere else? and where did all the samples come from? dope ass song!! peace god.
@IcePda1nonly How you gonna ghoswrite then reveal the secret. I cant say I'm suprised. I used to call her the female Rakim and I truly wondered if she wrote those rhymes.
One of my favorite female rappers of all time...my jam from her was "this girl is off on her own". She killed that, sounding like a female Big Daddy Kane/Rakim...she was one of the most slept on emcee's ever. I still love her...she was as dope as they come.
White animals have stolen everything! Even the country most of on here are typing from. Think they wouldn't steal HISTORY, YOUR HISTORY? Better wake up. And like I said, I'm going to talk about the Most High ANYwhere I please. HE takes care of me everyday and all HE asks is that I feed his children with knowledge. And that means ANYWHERE. So yall ATE it, now I'm done.
And to the rest of you TRAINED SOCIETY MONKEYS...do you give this much time to the Most High? Do you talk about Him as much as these illuminati satan worshippers in entertainment? The only entertaining they are doing is PREventing your dumb asses from ENTERing into the kingdom of the Most High. We are royal people not butt shaking, half dressed, weed smoking, whores (men too) cursing, gang-bangers they TRAINED you to be! You are the chosen children of the Most High. Study YOUR BIBLE! @THEALMIGHYCHOSEN12 They're called sheeple, not "trained society monkeys". There's plenty of truth movement videos for you to post on here on YouTube(the "4th Krypton" is the best channel for that), so go ahead and post comments there instead of on this channel.
@theaznlvr The term jewISH means they are NOT the true jews of the bible. It means that they are nearly 90% Khazar jews otherwise known as Esau, Edomites in the bible. In the book called THE THIRTEENTH TRIBE, it tells of their true history and how what you think of as jewISH today means they are NOT. They CHOSE to be jews. They are just as cursed as the rest of the Edomites in modern today society (b/c we know most ppl in the beginning were dark/black) I am not jewISH. I AM a jew.
@theaznlvr I AM the chosen the bible speaks of. And if your a so-called black, so called-spanish, so called native *ndian...then you ARE the children of the twelve tribes of Israel. And you can believe or disbelieve. I could care less.
@HUMANREK Lyte didn't run Ant out of business.10% Dis came out in '88, Shut The Eff Up in '89. Ant put out her 2nd lp in '90 so apparently she still had a career going but didn't get the respect she deserved but she is BADASS!
Mc LYTE ROLLED OUT ON HER OWN NO 1 BACK IN THOSE DAYS HAD THE BALLS OR TITS TO RUN LYTE ANYWHERE LOL TRUST ME IVE SEEN IT ALL FROM THIS HIP HOP THING AND A DANG DIGGY DANG DA DANG DANG
antionette never became what was intended!! because it was MY VISION AND MY DREAM!! I WORKED WITH HER OVER A YR DAM NEAR EVERYDAY!! UNTIL IAY ELLIS GOT HER TO SIGN A CONTRACT WITH OUT ME PRESENT!! HE STOLE HER!! TOOK ME OUT THE PICTURE AND THOUGHT HE COULD KEEP ALL THE MONEY & GET JUS ANYBODY TO WRITE HER STUFF!! BUT IT WAS MY CREATION, THEY TRIED TO MAKE A STAR WITHOUT THE ORIGINAL BLUEPRINT!! AND THATS THE REAL STORY ALL DAY FAT DOUG SAID SO!! DUECES!!
ALSO ANTIONETTE HAD NEVER EVER MET LYTE!! LYTE CAME AT HER FIRST!! CAUSE SHE WAS GETTIN A BUZZ IN INDUSTRY CIRCLES!!! AND LYTE DID NOT WRITE ALL OF HER OWN LYRICS FACT!!!!!, AND THE SHIT I HAD FOR ANTIONETTE TO RESPOND TO LYTE WOULDA CLEARED THE AIR FOR REAL!!! WE NEVER RECORDED IT CAUSE HER FAKE MANAGER WAS SCARED!! AND SHE WAS JUST A PUPPET BEING PULLED BY THE WRONG STRINGS!! FOLKS THAT NEVER CARED ABOUT HER!! RAKIM, and kane both was bout to do records with her!!
ITS FUNNY HOW SO MANY TALK ABOUT STUFF THEY HEARD RUMORS AND SUCH!! BUT HERES FROM THE HORSES MOUTH I CREATED AND I GUESS YALL WANNA CALL ME A GHOSTWRITER BUT I WAS MUCH MORE !!! AS FAR AS THAT SECOND LP I NEVER TOUCHED THAT WACK POP SHIT HER WACK ASS MANAGER JAY ELLIS PUT HER ON TRYIN TO GET RICH ON SOME SALT N PEPA TRIP!!! WE WOULD HAVE CHANGED THE GAME IF MY CREATION WOULD A JUST SHUT THE FUCK UP AND LET ME FINISHED MAKIN HER A STAR!! FAT DOUG! DUECES!
true enough antionette was of the rawest spitters in the female category.... however antoinette never wrote her lyrics to her first album. EVER. she had a ghost writer for the first album. she tried to write her second album. couldn't pull it off. her ghost-writer returned to help her complete the second album. IT WAS WACK!! The MAJOR difference between her and LYTE was Lyte wrote her own lyrics. Milk D and Gizmo helped her on her first album. everything else was her... completely.
@TheDougie1970 GOTTA RESPOND TO THIS HOMIE, CAUSE NOT NOT EXACTLY CORRECT!!, NO AND I MEAN NO ONE HERE KNOWS THIS BETTER THAN ME!!!, I WAS THAT GHOSTWRITER!! BETTER STILL MORE THAN A GHOSTWRITER I CREATED ANTIONETTE THE GANSTRESS OF RAP!! ADMITT FACTS YEAH I WROTE AND TAUGHT HER HOW TO FLOW, BUT SHE WAS A GREAT STUDENT, WITH A NATURAL ABILITY TO ADAPT!! AS FAR AS ALL THAT POP SHIT AND SECOND LP I HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH IT
@TheDougie1970 U NOT CORRECT FAM SORRY NO CIGAR!! LEARN YA HISTORY NOT THE RUMORS AND WRONG FACTS!! I NEVER CAME BACK AND WROTE NOTHING FOR THAT SECOND WACK ASS LP!!
@TheDougie1970 as a true Anoinette - from her own mouth on an appearance on BET's Rap City she admitted she didn't write all her rhymes -Lyte didn't write alot of her Lyrics as well if you look at the liner notes or her CD's audio two did alot or her work so to be honest they were equal when it came to writing and talent - Lyte just had a better marketing advantage as well as a label that had more clout - Next Plateu's money maker was S-N-P - whoever is selling gets priority thas the business
true enough antionette was of the rawest spitters in the female category.... however antoinette never wrote her lyrics to her first album. EVER. she had a ghost writer for the first album. she tried to write her second album. couldn't pull it off. her ghost-writer returned to help her complete the second album. IT WAS WACK!!
Sorry to say, well, I'm not sorry... Lyte took Antoinette and broke her into little pieces that could not be put together again.. no way Antoinette could even compare.. oh well...
Lyte did NOT end Antoinette's career, it was lack of promotion and marketing from Next Plateau record label in which she was signed to. Who's the Boss LP/ALBUM/Tape was DOPE for the time it came out 88/89 to be a female mc in the 80's , you had to work HARD and show that you had skills on the mic unlike the gimmick "Nicki M." of today.
I went to HS with her and she always had flow.... remember the battles in lunch room beating on the tables she took on all comers and beat them.....Respect Queen
There was also ya girl from the group called "Funky 4 plus one". I believe she is the first MC Sha Rock. They started in 76-77 from the Bronx with the original Jazzy Jeff. That's the Joint was there popular song.
@djkaneck1 fuck them haters Antoinette rock the shit out of L Y T E that man acting lady cant out rap her way out of a trash can when it come to a head to head battle Antoinette ROCKS and thats WORD!!!
The first official female rapper is Angie Stone. She was with the Sugar hill and Spoonie Gee. In 1979 her group "Sequence" had track called "Funk You Up". i've been a DJ for a long time and I wished I'd kept all my records.
@djkaneck1 FIRST OFFICAL WAS SHA-ROCK HOMIE!! BEFORE ANGIE STONE!!, FUNKY 4 PLUS 1! THATS THE JOINT!, AND THEY PERFORMED ON SAT NITE LIVE, ALSO DEBBIE DEE , WAS THE HARDEST FEMALE BACK THEN DOPE AS HELL, AND WHILE IM AT IT PEBBLY POOH!! MASTER DON COMMITEE,,,, FUNK BOX PARTY!! ENJOY RECORDS!!!, GET THAT HISTORY RIGHT HOMIE!!, WHEN U TALKING IT!!, MAKE SYRE ITS CORRECT HISTORY!!, TO MANY ARE UNINFORMED ON THE HISTORY OF THE GREASTEST ART FORM HIP HOP!
@luvhandlerfd Before you ASSume I don't know my history. Read what I wrote on this exact post 4 months ago "Homie". Make "sure" you READ every comment before you press up against a REAL Hip-Hop Historian. Since you claim to be so informed, 1st quiz: name all 5 eras (timeline and all) in Hip-Hop. Just to let you know I lecture Hip-Hop at a major university. Well, I'm waiting.
@djkaneck1 U ARE CORRECT, FAM "I DONT READ EVERY POST!!, I JUST WAS COMMENTING ON THE POST IN QUESTION!!, U SAID THE 1ST WAS ANGIE?, THAT WAS WRONG!, NOT QUESTIONING U PER SAY AS A "HISTORIAN" GLAD TO HEAR IT!! KEEP TEACHING IT! NOT WORRIED BOUT A POP QUIZ?, I LIVED IT, BEEN A PART OF IT ALL MY LIFE!!, BUSY BEE USED TO BABY SIT ME!!, HUNG WIT COLD CRUSH, .A.J. SPOONIE G!! DST!, MY HISTORY IS MY HEART AND BLOOD!, NO BOOKS NO LECTURES!, BUT KEEP DOING YA THING!
@luvhandlerfd FOLKS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT HIP HOP!! SO I WILL APPLAUD YOUR EFFORTS!!!! I GET HAPPY WHEN IT DISCUSSED!!, CAUSE I KNOW WHAT WE CAME FROM WITH IT!!! AS A CULTURE I LIVED IT!! WILDSTYLE WAS NOT "JUST A MOVIE FOR ME" I JUST TRY TO INFORM WHEN I FEEL AND KNOW SOMETHING MAY BE ALIL OFF, OR ALIL MISINFORMED!. SO WHEN I POP UP HERE FROM TIME TO TIME TO SEE WHATS BEING SAID, AND I SEE SOMETHING NOT CORRECT I TRY TO INFORM!, NOT DEBATE!,
@luvhandlerfd AS FAR AS MY COMMENTS ABOUT ANTIONETTE, SOMEONE ASKED ME TO CHECK OUT WHAT WAS BEING SAID!, THERE'S NO DEBATE NEEDED. I (NO POWER TRIP NEEDED!!! LOL) CREATED ANTIONETTE THE M.C.!!! ANYTHING IN REGARDS TO THE RECORDS IN QUESTION??, I AM THE HORSES MOUTH!!! I APPRECIATE ALL COMMENTS GOOD OR BAD ABOUT HER!!, JUST SOMETHINGS HERE WERE NOT CORRECT, SO I TRIED TO INFORM! KEEP TEACHING HIP HOP FAM! JUST KNOW SOME AUTHORS & CREATORS ARE LISTENING!! (FACTS)
@luvhandlerfd AND FOR THE RECORD, AS FAR AS THE BATTLE ANTIONETTE VS LYTE!!, LYTE WON IT!!! IN MY OPINION BY DEFAULT!!!LOL, A FEW YRS AFTER THIS I HAD A CHANCE MEETING WITH M.C. LYTE, SHE KNEW WHO I WAS!! I WAS HONORED!, SHE JOKINGLY CALLED ME THE ENEMY!!, WE HUNG AT A VIDEO SHOOT, AND IT WAS REALLY ALL GOOD!! LYTE IS THE TRUTH!! THEN AND STILL TODAY, ONE OF MY FAVORITE M.C.S! ANTIONETTTE NEVER REALLY HAD THE CHANCE TO BECOME WHAT WAS INTENDED(SHOWBIZ!!)
@luvhandlerfd Actually I'm glad to see ya passion for your culture. Most don't know their culture or history. I'm pisst at most for not steppin' up to save 1520 Sedwick Ave. S. Bronx NY before they let it be sold. Don't worry we'll get it back one day.
I thought she was hard & she was CLASSY! i miss videos like this that actually made SENSE!! that was ill how she stepped str8 to tha girl & & made here bow down!!!
First off let me say I love MC Lyte. Always have, always will. If you prefer Lyte's style, so be it. But please stop saying Lyte ran Antoinette out of the business. IT"S SIMPLY NOT TRUE. 10% dis came out in 88. Shut the eff up in 89. Antoinette put out her second album in 1990. Apparently, Antoinette still had a career going. But, Antoinette didn't get the respect she deserved. You barely saw her videos or heard her on the radio. MAKES NO SENSE! because Antoinette is UNREAL! A TOTAL BADASS!
@AA323R73ON umm did it ever occur to you that she didn't get respect or any airplay because of losing the battle with mc lyte? Being a Rakim fan, I liked Antoinette back in the day too, was a big fan. That doesn't stop me from recognizing the obvious. She lost the battle in the eyes of the public and that led to the end of her career. It MAKES NO SENSE to you because you're ignoring the patently obvious.
Well we were bumpin' Antoinette in the late 80s and I'm talking Australia so she was definitely known outside of New York. She was on Next Plateau! - it's not like her records were impossible to get a hold of.
Having said that, Salt 'n' Pepa were evidently Herby's main thang to slang.
Antoinette was just clearly underrated! I love this clip though.
They put effort into actually creating something cinematic :)
@AA323R73ON Yes she is a Legend but to say people didnt know who she was if they werent in NY is not being real. I am from Chicago... We were lucky to have a college radio station that played uncensored HipHop. Antoinette was in heavy rotation, believe that. We didnt sleep on any of this. I used to call her a female Rakim. ;)
@chicagoblackmale WHPK and New York my ass...this shit came on Rap City and Music Juke Box LMAO....you elitist motherfuckers crack me up!!!She was all in Word Up and Rap Masters magazine SMH!! She went up against I think Lyte so it was a big deal.
@HOTSHOTTA100 ANTOINETTE WAS A FUCKIN BEAST !!!!!!!!!! too bad she didn't write most of her rhymes..very strong opponent for MC Lyte but not strong enough :)
@AA323R73ON fuck them haters Antoinette rock the shit out of L Y T E that man acting lady cant out rap her way out of a trash can when it come to a head to head battle Antoinette ROCKS and thats WORD!!!
@AA323R73ON Yeah that's true. I like both also. But as in all genres artists will be compared. One the "genuine" article. The other "the poor man's/woman's" version. Roxanne Shante was more popular than the Real Roxanne. Yet both had skills.
@AA323R73ON Light ended her career by the time 89 came. Nobody wanted to hear anything antoinette had to say after that. Lyte DID body Antoinette's career just like she did Roxanne Shante with Steady Fucking.
@Mz2muchx Sorry, but " end of career" means no albums or videos-NOTHING. That's the end of a career. Won't argue that Lyte had the upper hand as far as being promoted. She had great management and had the skills to back it up. But if your telling me that Antoinette doesn't have skills. You should probably listen to the above song again. Antoinette is what she said she was, The Gangstress.
@AA323R73ON As I stated before, Antonette doesn't get respect because she didn't write her rhymes...If its not coming from the heart, then why spit it at all? There are a lot of MC's that write their own lyrics, butt when you battle rap and you get somebody to say shit for you, then all credit is lost. It has nothing to do with management, it has something to do with skills. Lyte was simply the better rapper with the better skills
@Mz2muchx Interesting, because it's a known fact that LL Cool J wrote Lyte's lyrics for "Self Destruction". How much was written for Lyte or Antoinette? Who knows and who cares. Indeed, it's more potent when a rapper writes all their own material but I would never fault an artist if they used other's lyrics. Some genius writers that have no flow, and great rappers that can't write. Look at it this way, Whitney Houston didn't write my "I Will Always Love You" She just sang the sh#$ out of it!
@AA323R73ON ...See the difference here between LL and Lyte on that situation is that it wasn't for a battle. Who do you know how had battles with other MC's had other rappers write their shit for them? Its not the same thing.
@AA323R73ON Sounds like Lil Kim, who saluted Antoinette recently and cited her as an inspiration. Both bad asses that dont get the respect they deserve!
@AA323R73ON Calm down. None of these people even know of your small existence. Appreciate them and move on. Be this hyper about the Most High. Now HE'S important!
@theaznlvr 'STFU' these things still being typed? Your still being a trained society monkey? And. What's important is that YOUUUUUU noticed MEEEEEEE!!!! Thanks for the RECOGNITION!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rakim, P.E., Kane, Beastie Boys, 2 Live Crew, and many others escaped w/o lawsuits! Biz Markie was the 1st to get sued for "Vapors" then Stesasonic and others followed. It wasn't about stealing! It was about stopping a rapidly growing hiphop culture from expanding. Many great MCs died after being sued! All we did mostly then was search for oldies, spin 'em on 1200s, sample to a MPC, Then Bam! a Hit from Yo Basement! But Now "the powers that be" got muthafuckas scared to even scratch a record!
The A was no joke/But lyte had to let the bitch no/ "hot damn hoe/SHut the fuck up" lololo im just playin lol But lyte did get in that ass with that song, she really did
I have a question. I've been wanting to know this for years.
What track was sampled from 0:52 up to 1:04 and again in this rap? I mean the sample of those brassy jazz-funk chords ascending. Could you please tell me what record was it taken from? Thanks a lot.
Blues & Pants by James Brown. It's on his Hot Pants album. You'll find that part you're looking for in the last minute of the song...of course it's sped up in the Antoinette song..
Lyte bodie her career.

true enough antionette was of the rawest spitters in the female category.... however antoinette never wrote her lyrics to her first album. EVER. she had a ghost writer for the first album. she tried to write her second album. couldn't pull it off. her ghost-writer returned to help her complete the second album.

@AA323R73ON
Well we were bumpin' Antoinette in the late 80s and I'm talking Australia so she was definitely known outside of New York.

I used to call her a female Rakim. ;)

@AA323R73ON Yeah that's true. I like both also. But as in all genres artists will be compared. One the "genuine" article. The other "the poor man's/woman's" version. Roxanne Shante was more popular than the Real Roxanne. Yet both had skills.
panamaniak 1 year ago
@AA323R73ON Light ended her career by the time 89 came. Nobody wanted to hear anything antoinette had to say after that. Lyte DID body Antoinette's career just like she did Roxanne Shante with Steady Fucking.
Mz2muchx 1 year ago
@Mz2muchx Sorry, but " end of career" means no albums or videos-NOTHING. That's the end of a career. Won't argue that Lyte had the upper hand as far as being promoted. She had great management and had the skills to back it up. But if your telling me that Antoinette doesn't have skills. You should probably listen to the above song again. Antoinette is what she said she was, The Gangstress.
AA323R73ON 1 year ago
@AA323R73ON As I stated before, Antonette doesn't get respect because she didn't write her rhymes...If its not coming from the heart, then why spit it at all? There are a lot of MC's that write their own lyrics, butt when you battle rap and you get somebody to say shit for you, then all credit is lost. It has nothing to do with management, it has something to do with skills. Lyte was simply the better rapper with the better skills
Mz2muchx 1 year ago
@Mz2muchx Interesting, because it's a known fact that LL Cool J wrote Lyte's lyrics for "Self Destruction". How much was written for Lyte or Antoinette? Who knows and who cares. Indeed, it's more potent when a rapper writes all their own material but I would never fault an artist if they used other's lyrics. Some genius writers that have no flow, and great rappers that can't write. Look at it this way, Whitney Houston didn't write my "I Will Always Love You" She just sang the sh#$ out of it!
AA323R73ON 1 year ago
@AA323R73ON ...See the difference here between LL and Lyte on that situation is that it wasn't for a battle. Who do you know how had battles with other MC's had other rappers write their shit for them? Its not the same thing.

Blues & Pants by James Brown. It's on his Hot Pants album. You'll find that part you're looking for in the last minute of the song...of course it's sped up in the Antoinette song..
