  • im not going to lie. most of your lives will be 'pointless' you wont achieve great feats nor will you achieve enlightenment. its all an illusion, because even if you dont do anything you may influence someone else and some generation will carry on that influence, upon their children and upon theirs. and hundreds of similarly 'pointless' lives will be led, maybe thousands until one person does something truly brilliant. that this person is an island isnt true, he/she is you, and you may never kno

  • this was probably the saddest scene of the movie besides the scene where he's crying about losing Wilson in the ocean

  • Such a beautiful, and moving scene. When I look back on all of the great scenes in cinema, I would be hard pressed to find a scene more moving than this one.

  • Out of any movie, this quote makes me cry every time. It means so much, and to think that people argue over "god" in this. It's not all about Jesus if you don't believe it to be. It's just about going through life, no matter how hard the times are.

  • 7 people stopped breathing

  • Not to be rude but I don't think it's necessary to bring God into this because no where in this scene does Tom bring up God. What kept him alive and hopeful was the love he had for Kelly.

  • Tom Hanks got robbed by the Academy for this one (and it wasn't the first time). He carried that movie for 2 and a 1/2 hours, largely by himself. There's no doubt he should have received Best Actor.

  • @mco119 hard to disagree with you

  • @365to173repubsPWNED

Well, I'm no movie critic..but, honestly, Tom Hanks is one of the most incredible actors out there. He can nail almost any role, and this is shown no better than in "Cast Away." He did an amazing job.

  • A beautiful scene from an amazing movie ruined by a dumb discussion about god.

*sigh* you can't get away from this shit anywhere and these folks wonder why people constantly pick fights with them.

  • @darthkahn45 god is life. without him we wouldnt be here he made all of us in his image and he even sent his own son to die on the cross for our sins. he loves us and doesnt want us to waste the life we were given by him.

  • @rocklover59 Aww come on he can't ride on that forever, whats he done for us lately?

  • I wish I had some ice in my glass right now...

  • most it you may not care but threre was this girl i saw she was beautiful everything i expected athletic an everything turned out that she didnt even like me. when i hear who knows what the tide could bring it makes me think of how there are other people out there. there are other possibilities out there. an maybe you may never find someone. but you always have someone that loves you. an thats GOD. an you may not believe in GOD. do you believe that we got here by accident or was it a miracle(GOD

  • This quote pulled me through a hard and tough times, from brake-ups, divorce of my parents, the loss of my house do to eviction and much more. because of this quote i kept breathing and i overcame everything in time.

  • @adammaimaron Stay strong good sir : )

  • Looks like the branch didn't snap for 7 people.

  • i feel it just as you say.....

that´s why this is one of my favorite films... it´s so simple, but yet so deep....

  • tired

  • This movie sucked *trollfaice*

  • This is getting me through a hard seperation. Thank u

  • I'm so glad someone else found this monologue so moving and inspiring.

It brought a tear to my eye when I first saw the movie and I loved the last bit: I have to keep breathing...

Because TOWORROW THE SUN WILL RISE...Who knows what the Tide could bring..."

I loved it so much I made it a signature on my email and other forums!

    Thanks for posting!

  • I bet the 7 who disliked the movie work for UPS... or are zombies.

  • Gotta keep breathin

  • Who knows

  • The main theme will be played at our wedding - I have been so blessed to find you - my love, my life.

  • can u accept my video response pleeeease! i redid this scene

  • finally someonme has posted the most important scene in the whole movie!!! this sums up the whole movie..and what its trying to say...5 stars!!

  • i appreciate ice a lot more now

  • Wilson!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • probably one of my favourite movies of all time!

  • i was going to kill myself......i watched this.

  • That's the compromise in your love........

    :(

    Cast Away best movie :((

  • the music gets me crying EVERY SINGLE TIME.

  • @FunnyLimbo i´ve listen to this song every single day since i watched this movie, remembering this scene all days, and no matter what, i´m always positive, if anything goes bad, i just relax, I keep breathing, i wait for tomorrow, so the Sun will rise, and... who knows what the tide would bring? :D

Breathtaking movie, terrific history, incredible soundtrack and the best actor! what could we wait from that? Nothing less than ispiration and a leasson learned! Thank you Tom.. thank you "CAST AWAY"

  • The *perfection* with which he delivers the PAUSE ... LOOK DOWN .... "I have ice in my glass" -- destroys me to smithereens every. single. time.

Also the tiniest pause, raise in voice pitch and pace "then ... the tide came in ... and brought me.. a sail." -- even his cadence is acting. When I finally *got* that this movie was written as if it were an allegory, Tom Hanks' acting became this tour-de-force for me in this film. He's _incredibly_ talented.

  • Life is hard, there are times where I feel as I can't go on, or that things will never change. But God gave us this life for a reason, and their will be many beautiful days to come no matter how bad the days seem now.

  • @landj2010 My god man. I really do appreciate you posting this. For several days I have been feeling a little depressed but your words of wisdom opened my eyes to the big picture of life. Thank you so much.

  • @landj2010

    There is no god(s).

  • @landj2010 who are you to tell someone there is no god? You have no proof god exists, or doesn't exist. Please don't say ignorant things with 0 PROOF.

  • @badinsucks

Look around you. What kind of god(s) would allow innocent children die through intense suffering without any other reasoning than they were "born with original sin"? Bilge and trifle.

  • @Mcmotherfuckingrory Dude i'm not arguing with you about this. It's a youtube video. You have your thoughts and beliefs and are given that right as a person. No one can tell you god exists or doesn't. We all find out when we die. That's at. Maybe there is one, maybe not.

  • @Mcmotherfuckingrory do you believe in miracles or do you believe that you just get plain lucky. i think that GOD is real an that there is a god up there an that there is someone watching over me. thats a miracle my friend

  • @Mcmotherfuckingrory if there is no god then why are you here.

  • @infinityward0

god isn't real you delusional fool

  • @AKleafs482 in your mind thats why you are going to hell but ill pray for you casue we have to frogive our enemies

  • @infinityward0

I laughing over here. funny guy!

  • @landj2010

I hope your right, god bless you.

  • @landj2010 God does not exist

  • @TheBrett78 you 100% sure of that my friend?

  • Brilliant speech. Good shout on uploading

  • Good script, but would've been better if a half decent actor had said the words

  • @LeftWingJohn Tom Hanks is awesome!

  • i cried when he lost wilson....so sad

  • I watch this and it makes me think the future isn't so bleak, no one knows what tomorrow will bring, so it is best to be prepared for that moment that could change your life forever.

  • didn't he also say life is like a box of chocolates & houston we have a problem & the best one wilson, wilson, wilsoooooooon !

  • my poodle can act better than this monkey

  • @vespezian

And you can do better? I think he is the greatest.

  • really heart toucher sense .. loving it :'(

  • Not to "nitpick" - but it is: "I *gotta* (not have) keep breathing"

I know this because I have watched this scene so many times... I use it as motivation when things are so bad - I just say to myself: " I gotta keep breathing" ... because it is so true - many days are going to suck in life, but if you hang in there - many days will be amazing.

  • I could really use a sail right about now

  • I rarely miss a film with Tom Hanks.

  • I have ice in my glass!!

  • Even though Kelly had know way of knowing if Chuck was still alive..and had to move on with her life...i bet part of her feels guilty for marrying that toolbag ffrom sex and the city. I mean how can that schlub top Tom Hanks?

  • Tom Hanks is perfect casting for this movie. He plays this soo well, I have never gotten bored of this movie!!! This particular scene is just.... just wonderful. :)

  • most inspiring scene in movie history

  • "I couldn't even kill myself the way I wanted to...I knew, somehow, I had to stay alive. Somehow... I had to keep breathing... Even though there was no reason to hope.......And I know what I have to do now... I have to keep breathing...

Because tommorow The sun will rise...Who knows what the tide could bring..."....Great Words ....

P.S: Tom Hanks is one of my favorites actors of all time!!!

  • "And I know what I have to do now. I gotta keep breathing. Because tomorrow the sun will rise. Who knows what the tide could bring?"

Words to live by, ladies and gentlemen. Words to live by.

  • everytime i watch this movie i CRY and realize that i have to FIGHT for my LIFE and APPRECIATE all things!!!!

  • Throughout the whole film i didn't cry once. Until this scene nor had i ever cried at a movie b4 the words in this dialouge are just so powerful and don't really have an effect on you unless you've watched the whole film when your really lisenin and emoitionaly involved tom hanks u r just the man

  • Toma Hanks Is The Superb Actor I Ve Ever Seen In My LIfe

And The CAST AWAY is the best acting example i ve seen the really

the last scene Tom Hanks Gave His 200 Percent

    really

  • <3

  • 2 people think "Golden Girls" was a good show

  • whats up with the volume

  • This film means a lot to me. I had lived like this in island instead of Wilson I had dogs and ocean to chat with. I experienced same feeling especially after experiencing tsunami in islands and then i returned back to big city .. where there is everything .... but no happiness and i again returned back to islands!

  • This movie got me through my divorce!

  • "I have Ice in my glass...And i've lost her all over again."

  • "I'm so sad that I don't have Kelly...but I'm so grateful that she was with me on that island."

    :") Man...what a crusher...

  • as it is called the music

  • tom hanks is the best actor ever and this movie and alot others that he has done shows it tom hanks rules espically this movie!!!

  • 2 people think "Showgirls" is an excellent film. . . .

  • This movie should have had a scene where he let loose. I mean, he must have been real horny on the island alone for all of the time. The filmmakers should have included a scene where he went to a strip club and just got wild. Have him go up on stage and dance with the sluts. Then another scene where he gets laid by some cheap-ass hooker, while practically drowning in a puddle of booze and puke. It would have been funny, don't you think? It would be more realistic to have him party.

  • @muzeecX Friend, don't think that way. What ever u may b going through know that people do care about u. U will b ok and it may be that ur lifes meaning is to be here to help someone going through a similar situation in the future. Take comfort knowing there are complete strangers out there who care enough to do anything to help u, asking nothing in return, stay strong my friend x

  • Homesick....

  • In his isolation, he thought when he found himself he would find her, and then he realized she had moved on and he lost her all over again. He held on to the BOX and what was in the box. FOOTWEAR

  • Hey UtubeHazard your a fucking douchebag for deleting my comment I left on this video about 2 weeks ago, you fucking faggot

  • Thank you for uploading this. I'm going through some tough times right now. I have contemplated suicide several times but I guess this footage kinda makes me feel better.

  • @MuzeecX Hang in there man. Im going through some tough shit right now also, I lost someone that I love more than life itself a couple days ago. It makes me want to break down and cry. It makes me want to give the fuck up every day, but we cant do that buddy. We have to keep breathing, because tomorrow the sun will rise. Who knows what the tide could bring.

  • I have to keep breathing... For tomorrow the Sun will rise. who knows what the tide would bring?

  • MY FAVORITE SCENE FROM THE ENTIRE MOVIE!!!!

  • you can have all of the special effects but when it comes down to it all you need is a magnificent actor and a briliant monologue.

  • The scene as he finally breaches the crashing waves and escapes to the ocean. He's so happy to finally be free from the island, but then when he looks back, his eyes tear up and he is sad. That scene, combined with the most gut-wrenching music score, always get to me.

  • Thanks for the post. My favorite during tough times.

  • for me my fav parts when he comes to her house they both leave the house but of course he drives back she gets out of the car hugs him and says YOU ARE THE LOVE OF MY LIFE!!! while raining!!

    so poignant!!

  • cant hear it

  • I think the final scene in this movie between Tom and Helen - the one where he visits her home and drives away in the car they shared - is altogether the most gut-wrenching, heart-rending scene I've ever watched. It tears me up ever time I see it.

  • @kingward100 Me too. The backgeound music added to it.

  • So true!

  • Roger Ebert complained that his return to the mainland was boring. Personally I thought his return and dealing with the people he knew was the best part of the film. That even though he was clearly alive everybody still basically thought he was dead. He had no future with the world he tried so desperately to get back too. It was a major point of the movie that even though he was back in civilization, he was still totally alone.

  • One of the best actors in the history of film.

  • @JayMarxMusic not one of the best but THE BEST

  • @JayMarxMusic Yep, he's the best!!

  • this scene makes me cry every time i watch it

  • Tom Hanks has been in so many great movies....Cast Away, Forrest Gump, Saving Private Ryan, etc.....what a great actor!

  • @MrPowerlifter1 Toy Story, Road to Perdition, Apollo 13, The Green Mile, Catch Me if you can =)

  • I just wanted to live my life beside her, for the rest of my life ... but life has not allowed ... so I cry ... and forever I will cry ...

  • the best part is when he realizes: i have ice in my glass... i think that sums up everything...it's just my opinion...awesome awesome job with this video thnx so much for posting...it made my day

    kisses from italy

  • Love this so much!

  • *Best Quote Ever*

  • the film is excellent as a motivation to widen the crisis moments in life...

  • i've been looking for this clip for so long, thanks for posting it (:

  • I need a sail..

  • @TSM8088 Me too....me too.....

  • Im so sad that I don't have Kelly... but Im so greatfull that she was with me on that island.

  • @druvik eh lol at how you spelled grateful..

  • If I see this scene, tears coming out of my eyes. Such an sad story :(

  • What a fantastic monologue

  • to be able to act in a movie with not much dialogue...that's a great actor!

  • thanks for uploading. this monologue is one of my favorite scenes from any movie. very inspirational. However,in your write up of the script, you have hanks misquoted, he actually says:

"I am so sad that i don't have Kelly, but i am so grateful that she WAS on that island with me"

i think its one of the most profound lines in the monologue. it would be a shame to have it down wrong.

  • helen hunt was perfect as his wife. she did a great performance. and her eyes give out alot of emotion. Amazing film

  • There are very few actors in the world that could respect the beauty and the patience of this script-writing. Luckily, Tom Hanks is the definition of acting.

  • this movie is awesome ..hella touching .. really makes u think ..

tom hanks is my all time fav aktor ...

  • using this monologue as an audition piece for some talent agents! great stuff!!

  • cant. stop. crying.

  • Tom Hanks is the most talented actor I have ever seen and this wonderful movie is the best showcase of his work!

  • i love fedex!!!

  • why dont they make movies like this anymore

  • I can't stop watching it.

  • I love this. Tom Hanks is an amazing actor. No one could of played this role except him.

  • This movie made me cry, especially when he lost wilson.

  • @RawrGurr

i hear ya that was sad

  • And I've lost her all over again...

    :'( Keep breathing.

  • We both had done the math. Kelly added it all up and... knew she had to let me go. I added it up, and knew that I had... lost her. 'cos I was never gonna get off that island. I was gonna die there, totally alone. I was gonna get sick, or get injured or something. The only choice I had, the only thing I could control was when, and how, and where it was going to happen.

  • So... I made a rope and I went up to the summit, to hang myself. I had to test it, you know? Of course. You know me. And the weight of the log, snapped the limb of the tree, so I-I - , I couldn't even kill myself the way I wanted to. I had power over *nothing*. And that's when this feeling came over me like a warm blanket. I knew, somehow, that I had to stay alive. Somehow. I had to keep breathing.

  • Even though there was no reason to hope. And all my logic said that I would never see this place again. So that's what I did. I stayed alive. I kept breathing. And one day my logic was proven all wrong because the tide came in, and gave me a sail. And now, here I am. I'm back. In Memphis, talking to you. I have ice in my glass... And I've lost her all over again. I'm so sad that I don't have Kelly. But I'm so grateful that she was with me on that island.

  • And I know what I have to do now. I gotta keep breathing. Because tomorrow the sun will rise. Who knows what the tide could bring?

  • An amazing film - It still teaches me things every time I watch it - Tom Hanks is an film icon - he moves my soul...

  • I agree with comments that this movie is underappreciated. One of my favs. I think Wilson, and his attachment to Wilson, is one of the great ideas in film. And such a brave and unique ending for a Hollywood film. A deep movie. It really stays with you. Everything I look for in a movie but so seldom find. We need more like it.

  • Pretty sure he says "I'm so greatful she was WITH me on that island"

  • This scene gives me goosebumps!
