im not going to lie. most of your lives will be 'pointless' you wont achieve great feats nor will you achieve enlightenment. its all an illusion, because even if you dont do anything you may influence someone else and some generation will carry on that influence, upon their children and upon theirs. and hundreds of similarly 'pointless' lives will be led, maybe thousands until one person does something truly brilliant. that this person is an island isnt true, he/she is you, and you may never kno
Such a beautiful, and moving scene. When I look back on all of the great scenes in cinema, I would be hard pressed to find a scene more moving than this one.
Out of any movie, this quote makes me cry every time. It means so much, and to think that people argue over "god" in this. It's not all about Jesus if you don't believe it to be. It's just about going through life, no matter how hard the times are.
Not to be rude but I don't think it's necessary to bring God into this because no where in this scene does Tom bring up God. What kept him alive and hopeful was the love he had for Kelly.
Tom Hanks got robbed by the Academy for this one (and it wasn't the first time). He carried that movie for 2 and a 1/2 hours, largely by himself. There's no doubt he should have received Best Actor.
Well, I'm no movie critic..but, honestly, Tom Hanks is one of the most incredible actors out there. He can nail almost any role, and this is shown no better than in "Cast Away." He did an amazing job.

@darthkahn45 god is life. without him we wouldnt be here he made all of us in his image and he even sent his own son to die on the cross for our sins. he loves us and doesnt want us to waste the life we were given by him.
most it you may not care but threre was this girl i saw she was beautiful everything i expected athletic an everything turned out that she didnt even like me. when i hear who knows what the tide could bring it makes me think of how there are other people out there. there are other possibilities out there. an maybe you may never find someone. but you always have someone that loves you. an thats GOD. an you may not believe in GOD. do you believe that we got here by accident or was it a miracle(GOD
This quote pulled me through a hard and tough times, from brake-ups, divorce of my parents, the loss of my house do to eviction and much more. because of this quote i kept breathing and i overcame everything in time.
@FunnyLimbo i´ve listen to this song every single day since i watched this movie, remembering this scene all days, and no matter what, i´m always positive, if anything goes bad, i just relax, I keep breathing, i wait for tomorrow, so the Sun will rise, and... who knows what the tide would bring? :D
Breathtaking movie, terrific history, incredible soundtrack and the best actor! what could we wait from that? Nothing less than ispiration and a leasson learned! Thank you Tom.. thank you "CAST AWAY"
The *perfection* with which he delivers the PAUSE ... LOOK DOWN .... "I have ice in my glass" -- destroys me to smithereens every. single. time.
Also the tiniest pause, raise in voice pitch and pace "then ... the tide came in ... and brought me.. a sail." -- even his cadence is acting. When I finally *got* that this movie was written as if it were an allegory, Tom Hanks' acting became this tour-de-force for me in this film. He's _incredibly_ talented.
Life is hard, there are times where I feel as I can't go on, or that things will never change. But God gave us this life for a reason, and their will be many beautiful days to come no matter how bad the days seem now.

@Mcmotherfuckingrory Dude i'm not arguing with you about this. It's a youtube video. You have your thoughts and beliefs and are given that right as a person. No one can tell you god exists or doesn't. We all find out when we die. That's at. Maybe there is one, maybe not.
@Mcmotherfuckingrory do you believe in miracles or do you believe that you just get plain lucky. i think that GOD is real an that there is a god up there an that there is someone watching over me. thats a miracle my friend
I watch this and it makes me think the future isn't so bleak, no one knows what tomorrow will bring, so it is best to be prepared for that moment that could change your life forever.
Not to "nitpick" - but it is: "I *gotta* (not have) keep breathing"
I know this because I have watched this scene so many times... I use it as motivation when things are so bad - I just say to myself: " I gotta keep breathing" ... because it is so true - many days are going to suck in life, but if you hang in there - many days will be amazing.
Even though Kelly had know way of knowing if Chuck was still alive..and had to move on with her life...i bet part of her feels guilty for marrying that toolbag ffrom sex and the city. I mean how can that schlub top Tom Hanks?
Tom Hanks is perfect casting for this movie. He plays this soo well, I have never gotten bored of this movie!!! This particular scene is just.... just wonderful. :)

This movie should have had a scene where he let loose. I mean, he must have been real horny on the island alone for all of the time. The filmmakers should have included a scene where he went to a strip club and just got wild. Have him go up on stage and dance with the sluts. Then another scene where he gets laid by some cheap-ass hooker, while practically drowning in a puddle of booze and puke. It would have been funny, don't you think? @MuzeecX Hang in there man. Im going through some tough shit right now also, I lost someone that I love more than life itself a couple days ago. It makes me want to break down and cry. It makes me want to give the fuck up every day, but we cant do that buddy. We have to keep breathing, because tomorrow the sun will rise. Who knows what the tide could bring.
The scene as he finally breaches the crashing waves and escapes to the ocean. He's so happy to finally be free from the island, but then when he looks back, his eyes tear up and he is sad. That scene, combined with the most gut-wrenching music score, always get to me.
for me my fav parts when he comes to her house they both leave the house but of course he drives back she gets out of the car hugs him and says YOU ARE THE LOVE OF MY LIFE!!! while raining!!
I saw this scene when I had gone through the legal process of divorce, taking care of two little kids. The words, the actor, the setting, the music... everything just strongly touched my mind. I almost collapsed on the floor then. I still always reminds what he said in the scene when I feel oppressed by the weight of life. Absolutely the best scene ever to me!

I think the final scene in this movie between Tom and Helen - the one where he visits her home and drives away in the car they shared - is altogether the most gut-wrenching, heart-rending scene I've ever watched. It tears me up ever time I see it.
Roger Ebert complained that his return to the mainland was boring. Personally I thought his return and dealing with the people he knew was the best part of the film. That even though he was clearly alive everybody still basically thought he was dead. He had no future with the world he tried so desperately to get back too. It was a major point of the movie that even though he was back in civilization, he was still totally alone.
the best part is when he realizes: i have ice in my glass... i think that sums up everything...it's just my opinion...awesome awesome job with this video thnx so much for posting...it made my day
thanks for uploading. this monologue is one of my favorite scenes from any movie. very inspirational. However,in your write up of the script, you have hanks misquoted, he actually says:
"I am so sad that i don't have Kelly, but i am so grateful that she WAS on that island with me"
i think its one of the most profound lines in the monologue. it would be a shame to have it down wrong.
There are very few actors in the world that could respect the beauty and the patience of this script-writing. Luckily, Tom Hanks is the definition of acting.
We both had done the math. Kelly added it all up and... knew she had to let me go. I added it up, and knew that I had... lost her. 'cos I was never gonna get off that island. I was gonna die there, totally alone. I was gonna get sick, or get injured or something. The only choice I had, the only thing I could control was when, and how, and where it was going to happen.
So... I made a rope and I went up to the summit, to hang myself. I had to test it, you know? Of course. You know me. And the weight of the log, snapped the limb of the tree, so I-I - , I couldn't even kill myself the way I wanted to. I had power over *nothing*. And that's when this feeling came over me like a warm blanket. I knew, somehow, that I had to stay alive. Somehow. I had to keep breathing.
Even though there was no reason to hope. And all my logic said that I would never see this place again. So that's what I did. I stayed alive. I kept breathing. And one day my logic was proven all wrong because the tide came in, and gave me a sail. And now, here I am. I'm back. In Memphis, talking to you. I have ice in my glass... And I've lost her all over again. I'm so sad that I don't have Kelly. But I'm so grateful that she was with me on that island.
And all my logic said that I would never see this place again. So that's what I did. I stayed alive. I kept breathing. I agree with comments that this movie is underappreciated. One of my favs. I think Wilson, and his attachment to Wilson, is one of the great ideas in film. And such a brave and unique ending for a Hollywood film. A deep movie. It really stays with you. Everything I look for in a movie but so seldom find. We need more like it.
And then you woke up

It was a major point of the movie that even though he was back in civilization, he was still totally alone.

to be able to act in a movie with not much dialogue...that's a great actor!
jduncan42 1 year ago
thanks for uploading. this monologue is one of my favorite scenes from any movie. very inspirational.

Somehow. I had to keep breathing.
senderos2 1 year ago
Even though there was no reason to hope. And all my logic said that I would never see this place again. So that's what I did. I stayed alive. I kept breathing. And one day my logic was proven all wrong because the tide came in, and gave me a sail. And now, here I am. I'm back. In Memphis, talking to you. I have ice in my glass... And I've lost her all over again. I'm so sad that I don't have Kelly. But I'm so grateful that she was with me on that island.

And I know what I have to do now. I gotta keep breathing. Because tomorrow the sun will rise. Who knows what the tide could bring?

I agree with comments that this movie is underappreciated. One of my favs. I think Wilson, and his attachment to Wilson, is one of the great ideas in film. And such a brave and unique ending for a Hollywood film. A deep movie. It really stays with you. Everything I look for in a movie but so seldom find. We need more like it.
