Great voice but his distractingly nasal falsetto just makes me cringe every time I hear it. He seems to think it's his major selling point, too, because he manages to sing half of every song he does in that style. Extremely talented but frustrating to listen to.
I remember seeing him on Chicago Hope when he sang Some Enchanted Evening to his "stage" wife in a sanatorium. At that point I fell in love with his singing!

@RPenta The problem with M.P is, he can't decide if he wants to be a baritone or tenor. Just in the 1st few measures he slips back & forth from a fine resonant low range into a choir boy, almost castrati high voice. All nasal too! Gag me with a spoon. The whole freekin song he does it. Low, hi, looooooow, hi, nasal, back and forth. To be honest folks, it sucks. You bet, Gordon MacRae. That talented drunk owned this song and many others. In fact, I'm going there now to listen to his Soliloquy.
Mandy was the lead in the Broadway hit "Secret Garden"...the way he plays and sings the part of the hunch-backed Archibald Craven both melts your heart, and tears it out!
OMG! Never in my wildest dreams did I think he could do THAT. WOW! My ex looooooved his singing voice and I always laughed at him, "really the guy from Princess Bride?!?" Then I fell for him as Gideon and now this....WOW WOW WOW!
When he played Barbra Streisand's love interest in Yentl, he was not asked to sing. In Chicago Hope, he occasionally sang. When you listen to him sing or play the piano, it is clear the man has a unique musical talent that transcends his acting skills, good as they are.
I never want to play a role he originated...ever...not only because it's a fantastic voice to live up to, but it's such a unique sound to it. Damn you Mandy...but you're the man
I recall reading a (never-used) script for Criminal Minds in which Patinkin prys damning evidence from a suspect by locking him in a room and singing to him. Sorta what Reagan did to Noriega in Panama, but much more intense.
@madamerotten It's deliberate. He could sing the whole thing in the deep timbre if he wanted; you can see that by the last part, where he sings the high stuff in full voice. You can disagree with his style, but you're a moron if you think he couldn't sing the song however the hell he wanted.
I get you and I love Mandy too, and his unique head voice style. But that really is what makes him special. The last section he sings in full voice is ok - but you can see and hear the strain. Many unknown singers could top him on that. Still, what he does best - noone can touch him.
Mandy is a very talented man! I love his singing! I wish he never left criminal minds! I miss him! He isn't on any other show so the only way u can c hem is through utube
none of you are trained singers nor are you in a position to condemn this man's artistic and vocal perfection. Once you've performed on Broadway then you can say who is and isn't talented.

His upper register is all nasal and VERY unmasculine.Just listen to any great tenor and you'll hear hi but manly notes. For now stick to low reg until the hi notes are cleaned up.
@Loejyrrab contrary to your interpretation, I feel he uses his voice in a dramatic way to convey the meaning of each word that he sings and can handle the tenor range just beautifully.I don't think its nasal at all. Now Willie Nelson is nasal. He doesn't sound like that at all.
@jimmiecisco You say much that I can agree with re: Mandy. He's a talented man. It's a matter of taste. I can't stand his shifting from a beautiful baritone, deep and rich, to that gargoyle Irish type tenor. It's as if he's doing singing impressions, sounding like 2 completely different vocalists. @GreyIceman He has publicly stated that he abhors violence on tv and was quite uncomfortable with a lot of scenes that he did on Criminal Minds, so, he left. From what I read, his departure was quite sudden (he didn't show up to the 3rd season table read), so, they had to scramble to write it in...hence the rather random departure of his character.
And as others have said...his background is broadway. He was also in the OBC of Sunday In The Park With George (title role).

AGENT GIDEON IS CRAZY AWESOME! Forget pistols and berretta, he should have just sang to the criminal and melted their hearts to get them to stop killing haha
If you like this you've GOT to find the video recording of the musical "Sunday in the Park with George" starring Mandy, and Bernadette Peters. It's freakin' awesome!!!

Amazing. After watching this guy in Criminal Minds (in which he was the most awesome character) I would never have pictured him as a singer. He is excellent!
I have been fortunate enough to see Mandy Patinkin in concert twice. His voice is magnificent. This is one explosive piece of artistry! When you leave a Mandy Patinkin concert, his voice will echo in your mind forever!!
This sounds weird. It's like he has split personalities with 2 TOTALLY different voices. Physically, it looks like he has a massive chest and a sings with a warm baritone sound. But then he has this light, wimpy, tenory sound with some kind of slow pulsing vibrato. The guy is obviously extremely successful and famous but it's just weird to me.
@uniqueattack Why weird? I hear a vibrato throughout his range. Vibratos are used by many singers to convey feeling. Anyone can expand their range in either or both directions. Pitch is muscular control and practice. What makes someone a baritone or a tenor or a soprano is not merely being able to reach a certain pitch but the structure of the "instrument" itself. This is why the same note sounds different on an upright bass than on a violin. Wimpy?? Ever hear of DYNAMICS?
So nobody here mentions Gordon McRae, John Raitt, or Howard Keel?? For that matter although he did not play the role, the great Mario Lanza recorded this song as well. So are they chopped meatballs--I am Italian, not Jewish?
@RPenta they're great singers all of them. Just because I said I'd love to hear Mandy Patinkin sing Soliloquy, does not mean I do not like the guys you mentioned. I did not intent anything negative about them whatsoever.

We saw Mandy in concert a couple of years ago, and it was an experience I can only describe as "magical". For 90 minutes, the room seemed to disappear.. It was just he and his audience and the music. I will *never* forget it.
the song is less about romance, per se, than it is about two people, each of whom does not want to be the first to say those three little words, hence, "IF I loved you..." The song talks around the subject and in the show, Billy and Julie are falling in love but again, not wanting to admit it. And they never actually say they love each other until Billy dies and Julie tells him how she really feels about him. So I think Mandy nailed it but not as well as Patrick Wilson.
Brilliant rendition!! I think that Mandy was going for a different interpretation from the original, like a lost love type of idea rather than the romance of the original.
I took it as he's singing about all the beauty and bliss of a romance, and then he changes in the second refrain to remembering how he lost that happiness and love through his own impasses and over thinking. But that's just me :)
It's not a good recording (my apologies to the author), but having heard Mandy, his brilliance is clearly evident.
Mandy Patinkin, in my opinion is the star factor in anything he touches, refering to television for a moment; from way back in the day of Alien Nation, to Chicago Hope, Princess Bride, Dead Like Me etc., he caught my attention during an impromptu performance on Letterman. I was *stunned*. Listened to everything I could find of his and was not disappointed.
He has a beautifully powerful voice...but I don't think he made a good performance on this one. I really love this song but I can't feel the romance in this rendition of the song.
I disagree with the guy that says hes a career actor- many of his performances are really great. I gotta say this ones a bit wierd (I think julie jordan would run away). I think his actng is very sincere but his choices with dynamics here arent really working. Given that hes not performing in carousel in in this video, maybe he thought hed experiment...
Mandy Patinkin is a highly respected singer-actor on Broadway. He has received awards and nominations for awards for his work dating back to 1980. He also has acted in movies and TV shows. He is a tenor and sings like a Broadway musical star. Which he is.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Overacted.
Problem with career actors, like Patinkin here, is that the performance is ACTED. They have acted for so long, that they can't just sing a God dammed song simply and naturally.
And three tones he sings from deep low to girly high, over and over, is too disturbing, not mentioning the wobbly awkward tremolo and the tasteless, disproportionate, almost a parody of crescendo and finale.
Pathetic and F A K E.
But the kind and faithful public, know the routine and, do their part, clapping
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Even though this comment was rated down, I completely agree. The vocal tone is inconsistent and laughable. He has his good moments, but its overly dramatic and insincere.
Its Rube! Ive been a musician my most of my life & something a lot of individuals have a hard time connecting with is the faces and movements performers make when they are what I like to call "channeling"; something in your brain will erase everyting in front of you to the point that your own physical body doesnt exist. It's in these moments I think you should feel lucky to be whitness. Sure people who cant connect with it will feel akward and laugh. Maybe it's a lost art. Too bad, I liked it
@LaughingOTI80 I understand exactly what you mean. It's a certain point right in the middle of your brain that has no connection to the outside world.
Oh whatever.....for chrissakes.....he's an Irish tenor, and they are particularly noted for their, how did you describe it "awkward tremolo" and "girly high"....plus he's singing this on an open stage where the ambient room noise can't be controlled by the device doing the recording....
Amazing :-)

Criminal Minds is my favorite show, Gideon my favorite character, but it truly is sad that that's the only thing most know him for (other than the princess bride.) He is a brilliant actor, let that not be forgotten, but he is a fantastic singer, as well! What beautiful gifts he's been given!

Amazing. After watching this guy in Criminal Minds (in which he was the most awesome character) I would never have pictured him as a singer. He is excellent!

This sounds weird. It's like he has split personalities with 2 TOTALLY different voices. Physically, it looks like he has a massive chest and a sings with a warm baritone sound. But then he has this light, wimpy, tenory sound with some kind of slow pulsing vibrato. The guy is obviously extremely successful and famous but it's just weird to me.
uniqueattack 1 year ago

So are they chopped meatballs--I am Italian, not Jewish?

one of my favorite actors of all time singing a beautiful song. my favorite mandy performance is sunday in the park with george.
tellmewhatsahappenin 2 years ago
the song is less about romance, per se, than it is about two people, each of whom does not want to be the first to say those three little words, hence, "IF I loved you..." The song talks around the subject and in the show, Billy and Julie are falling in love but again, not wanting to admit it. And they never actually say they love each other until Billy dies and Julie tells him how she really feels about him. So I think Mandy nailed it but not as well as Patrick Wilson.

ety8keyz 2 years ago
Brilliant rendition!! I think that Mandy was going for a different interpretation from the original, like a lost love type of idea rather than the romance of the original.
I took it as he's singing about all the beauty and bliss of a romance, and then he changes in the second refrain to remembering how he lost that happiness and love through his own impasses and over thinking. But that's just me :)
luciusvanderbilt 2 years ago 2
It's not a good recording (my apologies to the author), but having heard Mandy, his brilliance is clearly evident.
Mandy Patinkin, in my opinion is the star factor in anything he touches, refering to television for a moment; from way back in the day of Alien Nation, to Chicago Hope, Princess Bride, Dead Like Me etc., he caught my attention during an impromptu performance on Letterman. I was *stunned*. Listened to everything I could find of his and was not disappointed.

He has a beautifully powerful voice...but I don't think he made a good performance on this one. I really love this song but I can't feel the romance in this rendition of the song.
greymon23 2 years ago
I disagree with the guy that says hes a career actor- many of his performances are really great. I gotta say this ones a bit wierd (I think julie jordan would run away). I think his actng is very sincere but his choices with dynamics here arent really working. Given that hes not performing in carousel in in this video, maybe he thought hed experiment...

Mandy Patinkin is a highly respected singer-actor on Broadway. He has received awards and nominations for awards for his work dating back to 1980. He also has acted in movies and TV shows. He is a tenor and sings like a Broadway musical star. Which he is.

Too bad, I liked it
LaughingOTI80 2 years ago 4
@LaughingOTI80 I understand exactly what you mean. It's a certain point right in the middle of your brain that has no connection to the outside world.
TheSusiQ 1 year ago
Oh whatever.....for chrissakes.....he's an Irish tenor, and they are particularly noted for their, how did you describe it "awkward tremolo" and "girly high"....plus he's singing this on an open stage where the ambient room noise can't be controlled by the device doing the recording....
