I was cast as Ruth a while ago, we have performances in march, and we added this number in... Good lord... I'm still trying to get it down x-x Patricia is AMAZING in this
@ProdigyStepper Not sure. On the recorded soundtrack of the Joseph Papp "Pirates of Penzance" production, Kline pronounces it "iddle" rather than "idle". It could be Kline did it here as a joke.
Why has a "My Eyes Are Fully Open" from Ruddigore in a production of Pirate's of Penzance? Penzance was composed and produced by Gilbert and Sullivan almost 8 years before Ruddigore.
@FORGE8700 It's a joke. The lyrics, appropriately modified, fit what's going on in Pirates fairly well. In fact, if you listen closely, you'll notice that Ruth says "I'll sing this song from Ruddigore, 'It Really Doesn't Matter.'" It's in the same spirit as the quotation from HMS Pinafore that appears in Utopia Limited.
@musicalsnclassics Eh, no. Perhaps Frederic is the same person, in fact I believe it is, but I do not think that the Pirate King is Kevin Klein here, though I do think Klein borrowed fairly heavily from this guy. Still a great cast here.
It's not too tough. Each singer just has to learn their own verse. and The chorus is repetitive. Once the singer knows the words speeding up is not tough.
ya' know, "matter" was also the basis for the "speed test" number in "thoroughly modern millie". trevor has millie type a letter about rancid floor wax.
It can be fun to mix up Gilbert and Sullivan. Just for the hell of it, when my university's G&S society was performing "The Grand Duke," the director threw in the trio from "Utopia" for Rudolf, Ernest and the notary.
Wen you are musical theatre a lot don't have bigger lung capacities, it is just that we lear how to manage the air we do have better. Also we find was to sneak quick short breaths in different spots.
Seanblum it's Patricia Rutledge; one of the UK's finest actresses - well..finest period. Far superior to the rubbish we're stuck with in North America
@islandsylph The first time i saw this i immediatly though,. what the FUCK is hyacinth bucket doing as a pirate!!!! sorry about the spelling, my first language is german :D
Yes -- this production [inspiration thereof] was far superior to the feature film release. Saw it a week ago with a friend and laughed myself silly. Wonderful rendition of the original G & S, mercifully devoid of the liturgical feel from which most productions of their operattas suffer. A MUST-SEE.
do you know what the difference is for the jr. versions? like what songs were cut or altered dramatically and were there any key changes made for younger singers who couldn't sing as high as professionals?
We did the junior version and i think they cut the best songs on purpose. They change lots of recitatives into dialogue and they change the high note in "oh is there not one maiden". So lets start from the top: they cut out the second verse of "oh better far", the second verse of "oh false one", the first verse of "oh is there not one maiden", the second verse of the major general song, "im telling a terrible story", "hail poetry", mabels solo in oh dry the glistening tear", "when a felons not e
Actually, this song wasn't originally in Pirates. It's from the G&S musical Ruddigore, they just changed the words and used it because it's brilliant. If you listen closely, at the end of Ruth's verse, she sings "So I'll sing this song from Ruddigore, it really doesn't matter."

@spidrawebster The word is "idyll." (rhymes with "twiddle") According to Wordly Wise, it's "an episode or experience that is calm and carefree."
