  • I give it more of a C+ The Acting was not the best, the CGI looked pretty awful for a 2011 movie, the plot was tense but the characters did some real stupid things and the ending was a bit pointless.

  • One of these days you'll have to review Patriot Games

  • My fave Sci-fi/horror film of the year, i saw it 4 times in theaters and watched 1982's movie on DVD/Blu-Ray afterwards and even went to Universal Orlando and had a blast with the Maze in horror nights.

  • i Still love the john carpenters 1982 the thing this one however is not bad either its

pretty good very suspenseful im a such fan of this type of horror it kinda reminds

you of that video game dead space so awesome GREAT REVIEW btw!

  • again...a really uninspired lame remake. or in this case, "prequel".

It was not absolute crap, but cmon.....it was like the "Nightmare on Elm Street" Remake. For everyone who cares about the genre, this stuff is really lame. I was really dissapointed..i though, this "Prequel could be really good. i dont expect so much lack of imagination.

  • @trustice1

1982's movie was never the original film

  • @Johnlindsey289

    huh?

    i know...

  • I really liked it too :D im so happy someone else liked it!

  • Has Chris seen the 80s Thing? The point of that movie is only slightly suspense, but largely gore and action. I felt that the movie ended too quickly. There was the potential for more conflict, but it had too little of a budget - so if this movie expands on that, then it could be the cult extension. So to speak. I guess.

  • @Uaxis Haven't seen the new thing, so no spoilers.

  • I think they could have toned down on the script a little.......you don't have to talk with a studio-enhanced voice when your concerned, making a speech, or even scared.........the 1982 film had more natural acting.

As for the CGI itself, I haven't seen too many scenes of the monster. I have seen the beginning and acting.

  • finally dude, this is a badass review... im a true fan and been waiting forever for a remake or something. i feel the same way about the prequel and again this is a good review, not soem shitty ign review. or some bitch trying to find some socio-poly connection to todays world

  • oh my god your little 6 year old voice is hillarious!

  • DEATH PROOF

  • great review

  • a-, wow didnt see that comin for this movie. chris whats the difference between an a- and a b+

  • probably wait for the dvd loved the john carpenter version though

  • its not a remake

  • @puffpuffdustbunny It's certainly not the original;)

  • the original came in the 1950s the remake in the 1980's this is a prequel from the 1980s remake

  • @puffpuffdustbunny

Actually 1982's version was a faithful re-adaptation of John Campbell's novella "Who Goes There" which the 1951 version was a butchery of that story due to limited special effects technology and didn't have the characters from the novella, Carpenter's movie was more true and loyal to the original source.

  • thats cool but don't waste your time replying to you will eventually find out that there is to much uninformed people

  • @puffpuffdustbunny

Have you read Who Goes There?

  • no

  • ~Wow a positive review......I didnt expect this~~~Ive been hearing nothing but negative reviews on this so since u like it....I'll give it a shot~~~Great work Chris~!

  • @leeloo1967 the original one also had most negative reviews. the 1950s film was the only one the recived good reviews

  • @guyver11000

It's cause the critics were nostalgic over the original Thing movie thinking Carpenter's movie was a remake but what they don't know is that Carpenter's movie was a faithful re-adaptation of the novel "Who Goes There" and the film was meant for fans of the story

  • i wish you would add back that scene in your intro with you running in the parking lot throwing popcorn all over the place, that always made me laugh

  • LOL...Love you pun in the start: : -)

  • so...the movie takes place before or in the early 1980's...or has the time changed for the original. Why does it look like it's in modern times? huh...wouldn't a sequel or remake been better. or...a sequel...huh...wha...what is this...wait...

  • I always thought the thing was in a swamp. Then like there was game that came out for the xbox or it might have been for the xbox360 called the thing, and it took place in the snow and stuff with scientists and alien like creatures. Then I saw the preview for this movie and my first thought was that game, lol. So I guess they are all connected?

  • @timeforfunnification are you joking? have you even seen the 1982 film?

  • @timeforfunnification No the swamp one is MAN THING I think.

  • You should review the movie Courageous.

  • if u had seen the original then u would no that this is basically a remake having seen both i can say this is more remake than a prequel

  • @thekieranstoker12

1982's movie was NOT the original Thing movie

  • I did not enjoy it as much as you...! The horror genre is not really my "thing" (sorry), and I just didn't feel it brought anything more or better than the '82 one. The f/x were pretty good 'tho... Anyway I always love your reviews!

  • Why is everyone hopping aboard the "Let's-do-a-prequel-of-a-cult-classic-to-make-sh!tloads-of-money" bandwagon? oh wait...

  • @musefanatical1 Why is this new to you?

  • @LalitaDeLaCruz It is absolutely NOT new to me. I'm just fed up with that crap. Granted, these guys made a good movie here, but it just seems like EVERYONE's doing a sequel/prequel/WHATEVERquel instead of...you know...something ORIGINAL.

But no, Hollywood's gotta be all "Moneymoneymoneymoneymoneygoseeourmovieandmoneymoneymoneymoneymoneysendallyourmoneymoneymoneymoneymoneymoneymoneymoneymoneymoney...."

I get it. It's an industry. My point is that it started as an art and ought to stay that way.

  • @musefanatical1 Well I understand and agree. I just get so use to them pumping out movies for the sake of money, I'm just indifferent to it you know, but I get it art should be art, not just a way to make money:-) ...But I have to admit I watch more independent films anyway, but here recently I have been giving the bigger budgets a chance.

  • @musefanatical1 i agree with you about the whole art and all the remake/prequel thing... but i got to add that this one was pretty good unlike 99% of the others

  • @AkkuEnzeru There were other thing remakes? >_>

  • You look a bit like Joel Edgerton.

  • TheJillKill says they don`t use much CGI. hmmm. i`ll see it.

  • @ChrisStuckmann Harrison Ford is awesome and all but u should change ur STUCKMANNIZED logo up a bit. Btw great review

  • So looking forward to this film even more! going midnight :)

  • hey chris great review. I honestly thought this movie would suck but maybe ill give it a chance. But I want to know your opinion on the movie shattered glass. if you havn't seen it you definately should. its insanely underrated

  • Oh, cool! All this time I was thinking this was going to be a remake, but to hear it's actually a prequel makes me feel a lot better. I'm now actually looking forward to seeing this.

  • As a fan of the original (original John Carpenter, that is. I haven't seen the Thing from Another World), I'm glad to hear that you liked it.

I'm also gald to hear that they used practical effects for some parts. The Thing, in my opinion, had one of the best practical effects scenes I've ever scene (the head sepearting from the body). Seriously, I want to know how they did that.

  • I'm also a big creature feature fan. I grew up on the Alien and Predator movies so those are favorites. I also always felt that The Thing was somewhat akin to those movies. What are some of your other favorites?

  • Great review, I really want to see this now!!! I'm getting really pissed off at YouTube because NONE of your videos for the past month appeared in my sub box!!

  • Great review as always but I have to ask, were the death scenes as brutal as the John Carpenter one?

  • Dawn of the Dead proved to me that a remake can be just as good as the original or even better, I have faith in this (I know it's a prequel, but, regardless).

  • Chris I like you and your reviews, I subbed a few weeks ago. But your intro is too long and it kinda sucks. I like the music it has a movie review feel. way shorter would work better.

  • Actually I kinda like how they pulled this off, because the premise is similar enough that one could call it a 'remake', but it's a prequel to people familiar with the film, for the sake of continuity, and so they don't pretend they just used a little white-out, and retyped the same shit all over again.

  • I enjoyed the Kurt Russell movie, haven't seen the original and I will rent this.

  • Great review! Just wondering how much does it follow the original in terms of situations and scenes?

  • Funny how people dont seem to remember that the 1982 version was a rehash as well

  • @getlikemc

Actually Carpenter's movie was another adaptation of the story "Who Goes There" by John Campbell which inspired the 1951 version

  • Your intros are getting better and better hahah

  • wa sthere a sex scene in this movie like what smosh said?

  • wa sthere a sex in this movie like what smosh said?

  • You had me sold at Mary Elizabeth Winstead !

  • if they make the thing 2 witch will come out in 2014 is logically going to be the remake of the one with Kurt Russell since this new movie is the prequel . Right ?

  • mary elizabeth winstead is hot

  • Awesome, and now I might just go watch this, sounds like a really good film, and just the kind of film I'd like to see.

Oh, and the actor who was in the first clip you showed is named Ulrich Thomsen. Just seems like he's at least a semi big role, so maybe you should've mentioned his name.

  • when does this movie take place? in the 70ties? or do they never talk about that?

  • @alittleolder early 80`s

  • nice review chris! and FYI its WINstead not pronounced winestead but that doesn't matter i'll be watching the film friday i hope i enjoy it! keep up the work bro.

  • my problem with this is i know whos gonna die!! that takes the me out of the movie i cant connect to the characters

  • Good Review Chris, glad you liked it.

I am a huge fan of the John Carpenter movie, and I recently saw "The Thing from Another World" on TCM and liked it too. I may consider seeing this in theaters.

  • I seriously can't believe you loved this movie. I was looking forward to this and now I definitely feel comforted despite all the negative comments I've heard on the film.

2011-the Year of Surprises it seems. Hope I enjoy it as much as you did.

  • i liked her in Die hard 4

  • Great! I thought this was going to end up like 'Creature'. Or something like it. I was genuinely looking forward to seeing you rant on it. :P

  • What's your grade?

  • Watch the 1982 version first it fucken awesome. Then go watch the new one

  • have you seen the 2005 version of the amityville horror???

  • Ha those people were ICEolated! Ha ha...

  • wow its actually good? i was expecting the reviews to be terrible but hey i'll give it a shot I trust you. Thanks Chris :)

  • @ChrisStuckmann you should do your top 10 or your favorite creature movies of all time

  • Thank you for saying you liked it...lol,

i was sitting here and you was leading up to it i was saying please like please like it .

  • Nice review, I wanted to see this and now I'm looking forward to it. One question, I haven't seen the 1982 one yet, better to watch it before or after this?

  • I'm really glad you liked this movie

  • i love mary elizabeth winstead in horror movies specially the one in death proof

  • @ChrisStuckmann Hey Chris, I think it would be cool if you did a video on your favorite movie scores and soundtracks.

  • 1:21-1:24, hilarious!

  • Good review :D SUSCRIBED!

  • Wow, what a relief. I'm a huge fan of the 1982 version and I was worried this was just a lame cashgrab.

  • Saw it tonight at an advanced screening. Some obnoxious twat yelled out at one part 'Worst. Movie. Ever.' Never have I wanted to slap someone so much. That aside, fantastic film! Not as good as the original but damn! Great creature feature and one of the best prequels I've ever seen - you can really tell it was made by people who loved the original. Let me say it again: this is a perfect example of how to make a prequel right!

  • Im happy this got a good review and i hope its world wide on the 14th and i wont have ta wait a week to a month later ta see it. I think the reason people hate cg so much is cause we know certain creatures/movements cant be done so we find ourselfs focusing so hard on something cg that it spoils it for us..its like the hulk, alotta people are like "it looks fake".. its a 9-10 foot green gaint of course your brain just wont ecept it..i hate peoples ott dislike of cg (good cg). Great review chris

  • An A? Wow. I'm pretty surprised.Good review, I might see the movie now.

  • Hey Chris? Does it keep with the tradition of that awesome opening scene? Where that stuff peels away to reveal the title The Thing? But I'm defiantly seeing this.

  • Eric Christian Olsen is also Annie's hackey-sack playing boyfriend in Community..if you watch Community, Chris

  • ...i am going to see this with my new girlfriend!

  • Nice review. We share the exact same sentiments.

  • Wow, I was debating whether or not to even see this cause I kinda thought it was just gonna be another horror B movie I guess, but now I will probably check it out!

  • I just realised Ramona Flowers and Mr, Eco are in this movie! Now I am interested in this movie, also not seeing the original, a prequel could be pretty interesting before I see the original!

    Thanks chris!

  • hahahaha I loved the beginning.. it made me lol

  • that opening was pretty pun-ny haha

  • lol Cool review

  • Did they recreate the 'blood test' scene or something similar to emulate it from Carpenter's version?

  • good review Chris a- is good for me and it looks cool but is it as gory as the john carpenter

  • oh ya Chris like it time to see it on friday

  • great review Chris!! so how violent was it compared to the 1982 version?

  • nice job on the review

  • The problem I will have watching it is that if you have seen the Kurt Russell film you already know what the end result of the film is probably going to be. Why make a prequel for a film that came out almost 30 years ago? A remake would have made more sense.

  • @Cabzilla06 Having seen the film all I'll say is that you assume too much.

  • @ChrisStuckmann I would actually assume the same thing as Cabzilla06.. but you are right.. maybe we are assuming too much

  • @ChrisStuckmann Really? Now I am intrigued to see the film, especially with your recommendation.

  • @Cabzilla06 Same could be said about Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and that movie turned out awesome. Prequels are always made to surprise you with its ending, their made to entertain and show what happened before.

  • @Cabzilla06 they already stated that they weren't going to touch the original, just remaster it and cont with the sequel. All written by john carpenter himself back it 05.

  • @Cabzilla06

But if you do a remake, then you know, even more so what the end result is probably going to be. Not to mention the beginning and the middle. There's a lot more unknown to be told in a prequel than a remake. It's not like this movie had a set script. to follow. Remaking The Thing and sticking a Kurt Russell wannabe or look a like in the role just sounds dumb anyway.

  • I'm a huge fan of the John Carpenter film (it's definitely in my top 5 horror films of all time) and I have been very cautious about getting myself excited for this film, because it came off to me as being a cynical remake (or rather a remake masquerading as a prequel so they don't upset the fans)

The best I've been hoping for was a fun homage to the original. Some of the clips weren't seeling to me, but this review though is giving me more hope for it. Good review. I hope I enjoy it as you did

  • Ok, very surprised about The Thing. Real Steel, and even Fast Five I think I had more expectations than The Thing. Very intregued to see this now.

  • Hahahahaha heres the thing...

    I loled :L

  • I saw The Thing this last night, it was pretty damn fun and some of the art work was well done

  • @nickmoney

I saw it 4 times and had a blast with it, worthy of the 1982 masterpiece and to the cool 2002 video game sequel

  • oh im seeing this on friday, nice review. OH it took me until half way through your opening to understand the pun. hhaha

  • had to click like just for the joke lol

  • a remake of the thing? D: oh my god.. dont people have anything better to do? like making interesting movies and an original story that was not remade over 9000 times x.x

oh you liked the movie? alright nevermind then ^^

  • @happosai27 Trying to make this clear, it is a prequel not a remake.

  • @ChrisStuckmann lets say its a remake of a old theme put in a prequel to another remake

    the one from the 50s

  • @ChrisStuckmann Does your mom watch your videos, because my mom wouldn't. Great VIDEO

  • @happosai27 So... Aren't you listening to Chris' review? He clearly said "prequel."

  • @happosai27 the kurt ruseel thing was a remake of a 50s film

  • @TheArizonaExperience yes a prequel of a remake lol nice

im going to watch it anyway

  • @happosai27 The 'original' is already a remake... He even said that in the video. There are lots of things he said in the video...

  • @futurestoryteller with "original" you mean the 50s black and white movie?

  • @happosai27 No you called it 'The Thing' a 'remake of the thing' The black and white movie has a little bit of a longer title, but hey - that's not original either is it? It's an adaptation.

  • @futurestoryteller yup there is nothing new under the sun ;)

  • @happosai27

1982's movie was NOT a remake of the 1951 version, it is THE quintessential faithful adaptation of John Campbell's novella "Who Goes There" which inspired the 1951 version.
