i have an 81 N/A with a stage 2 clutch and when i first got it put in it was fast ass hell, but after sometime my front & rear seals need change the owner before me never took good care of the motor but the outside and inside were awesome, gonna be putting in the L28ET with a T3/T4 turbo soon from my 83 turbo donor car hope to post a video soon.
My buddies 79 N/A 280zx has had some head work, cam rockers and vavles done and header pipe will get to that 135 pretty damn quick, burns the tires off easy shifting into second
At that time the car was non-intercooled and running stock boost. It ran about stock turbo HP (Stock is 180 at the flywheel, mine did 171 at the wheels), and 200 ft-lbs of torque. The car is now intercooled and running 10 PSI of boost instead of 6 PSI. I'm eager to get it back on the dyno to see what it has gained.
At our dyno day a lightly modified NA 280ZX did 137 HP at the wheels (Stock rating is 135 at the flywheel).
1) The car is much lighter than newer cars, so it takes less to make them fast.
2) The L motors have a lot of torque, and torque is what you FEEL when you press on the gas. If you compare two cars with the same HP, the car with more torque will feel faster. Most newer tuner cars are low displacement torque-less wonders-- high HP, low torque-- they don't feel as fast
And yeah thats the same dyno day Big Phil went to, he's even in the video.
no way. The 1979 280ZX had a 135mph speedo. In 1980 the US law changed and mandated all cars have a 85mph top speed speedo (the law was later removed years later). The car will do 120 stock easy.
Almost every production car between 1982 and 1986 or so only had 85 mph on the speedo. It was stupid.
I had 79 280zx. I did 120 in it... ONCE! It felt like it was going to flip over or rattle itself to death. It survived that. I never did it again. That car was well worn.
Doing 120 in my Gen3 SHO feels like going 80 or so but of course I never did that again either.
hey man love the car. im 17 and just got a 81 NA 280zx as my first project build. i was wondering what your exhaust set up was. thanks

I have a 81 N/A 280zx, I have hit 167 mph in,,,With a simple 1 inch drop of the nose you can remove that shaking and increase your aerodynamics...

yeah my dads speedo in his 79' goes to 135 and we've done 127 in it before. I always wondered why other Z car speedos only went up to 80.
