I have a pretty similar layout sitting on my arduino at the moment too. ;-) ( driving mine through a maxim max6969 ic though ). Greetings from Melbourne.
If you want to keep going with it, the max6969's are pretty nice for doing lines of a LED array - you just set the input bit and then clock them and they carry it on down the row like a shift register, driving the LEDs directly. Easy to daisy chain too. :)
Dunno how much they cost - maxim sampled me two of them for free.
