Nesmith was out of his element; grabbing a black beat, doing a white rap, and basically tossing up a novelty act. I listened to Nesmith's song today and it doesn't hold up well. Nothing like some of the songs that were done by the Monkees which still appear timeless.
This guy Pharell is rapping right. White folks are always saying that their music is better than rap. Fine. But don't go diddling with rap and declare yourself its masters. That's not having an opinion. That's lying.
@eddobanks Considering that Nesmith's song was released in 1979, before Hip-Hop/Rap, was even mainstream, I don't think he was trying to do a 'white rap'. If anything, the original song was heavily influenced by Frank Zappa's style of writing/singing/talking/producing, as they were good friends.
Pharrell's version is just that---his version. So what if he improvised and used artistic license to create it. He's not the first to do that. At least he made the song relevant to a new generation!
Pharrell?! Seriously, this is the only rapper who recognized a good song to steal...er, I mean sample? Well...at least even Pharrell can't ruin it with his crap raps.
Nesmith does not need any publicity..He obviously OK'd this piece of shit...Whoever this goofball is..It don't matter. Nesmith can buy & sell him and most others as he was just announced as a billionaire last year..So fuck it..
No - don't blame Mike. He had nothing to do with this "crap, chit". Just a "goofball" messing around with adobe audition on a wet sunday afternoon. Still, judging by these delightful comments, I'm pleased it's brought so much sunshine and happiness into peoples lives! Job done.
Are you kidding me with this lame remake of a simply brillant Nesmith tune? Shame on you for turning perfection into musical sewage. Actually calling rap "musical" is kind of a stretch. Look, gentlemen, if you want to talk into a microphone, and call it music, suit yourself, but please stop taking well produced recordings, of talented singers, performing wonderful songs, and turning them into absolute garbage. Thanks...
Leave a good song alone! Lucy and Ramona and Sunset Sam (Crusin) written and performed by the winner of the first Grammy Award given for Video, Michael Nesmith, should have been done by someone who actually knows what to do with a great song. This is rubbish.
Let me guess...another rapper quote "sampling" unquote someone else's song and turning it into a pile of shit. That is so typical of rappers today. They couldn't write their own music even if the threat of a drive by shooting was imminant. I wasted 52 seconds of my life listening to this cRap.
typical rap, using a sample from someone great, then RUINING it, why cant rap artists come up with original stuff? because they have NO TALENT!!! i could do this, but i dont have the complexion for the connection!!!
Pharrell Williams, Terrific job with Mike's tune. Meshed very well, Sir. I love Mike Nesmith and I think you did justice to his tune. Glad you used his voice a little too. How did you come to find this song, or who brought it to your attention?
Actually Frank Zappa was the pioneer behind Rap. Them Honkey's sure knew their Booty Music

Nesmith never shoulda worn the cowboy hat. It's attracted a flock of lunkhead racist rednecks for fans.

Didn't even rearrange the sound track. This is god-awful. And to think great stuff is removed from YouTube so crap like this can replace it. Wow.

What do expect from cRap?

@paullouismosley
Rap is not usually to my personal music taste. But that's not saying that ALL rap is lousy music. Some is, some isn't. This, like all music.
However, this "cover" of Mike's song is crap. It's an embarrassment for Pharrell and an insult to Nesmith.
