It doesnt really matter what you use. For older Jeeps like the ZJ grand cherokee's or Cherokee's they were built to run on dextron 2. You can use Dextron 3 in it, or ATF+4.
I have a 97 Jeep Wrangler TJ Sport with 4.0 I6 AND the manual says to use mercon or dextron II BUT it says to use ATF+4 for the Transmission.. Is this right???
the manual transmission takes the dealer fluid only its a special motor oil with syncromesh additives expensive stuff the transfer case would be best to use atf+4 and thats also how I did our dakota
Just to play is safe I always undo the fill plug first before I drain.... just extra insurance incase the fill plug has a problem coming out. You don't want to drain the transfer case and then not be able to add fluid.
what really helps in tight spaces such as this is a pump like thing you can screw onto the bottle. It looks like one of those pumps on the top of a bottle of flavor at a coffee shop... but it has a thick hose sticking out of the end to put into the fill plug. Much less messy!

you can use either these transfer cases where in dodges and chevys but atf+4 is a better more shear stable oil and is fully synthetic
