from the clip i saw where spike was giving his comments on tyler it didnt seem like he was hating to me. he actually said that tyler was talented and has been done well for himself. he wasn't the one to even mention tyler. he said "these 2 shows on TNT" and the man who was interviewing him said "we're talking about tyler perry". i personally agree with spike had to say. i would go as far as saying its equal to amos and andy though
I thought that Spike was speaking about entertainment in general, and Tyler's movies and TV shows were just mere pixel of a bigger picture. Everyone seems to believe that it's a matter of an "uppity nigga" hating someone who getting paid. But that's easy to say if the art is not taken into account. Tyler's not being picked, he just doesn't understand where Spike is coming from. Madea may come from a positive place, but I'd be lying if I said that she isn't embarassing to watch.
Actually, I've been following both men and their work. Tyler NEVER came at Spike, as a matter of fact, Tyler really wanted to be accepted but the greats. They rejected him because of his massive success. Our African American, literary greats treated Terry McMillan the same way. I understand what Spike is trying to say, but honestly (I'm a writer myself), Spike is hatin'.
Spike Lee is a hater. Think about it...when Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence did the same thing nobody had a problem with it. But when Tyler Perry does it he gets blasted about it. That's not cool at all! Spike L. didn't have a problem when Eddie M & Martin L. did it why now? That's hating! And I agree what Tyler P. said if you don't like it oh well but when you criticize me and try to put me down "GO TO HELL"!
Look...Spike Lee has his own schtick from the east, John Singleton has his own schtick from the west and Tyler Perry has his own from the south and there's nothing wrong with that! Furthermore, there isn't anything wrong with "contructive criticism" if it comes from a positive place. Why is it that when a black person criticizes another black person it's automatically "Hate" or "Jealousy"! And tyler, many italians criticized Sopranos just like many Cubans criticized Scarface in the 80's!
People are going to tell their stories how they see fit. I inherited the "Amos & Andy" collection and i had to watch it as a child, so to compare Perry's work to that is not right, BUT we probably don't know lee's true feelings towards Perry's work. I think we should sit back and admire each others work and move on to our projects.
Spike lee knew what he meant when he said those comments.....Have you seen BAMBOOZLED.
Tyler wears many hats...filmmaker, writer, director, author, producer, etc. I mean, this man is an enterprise. Not only that, he provides opportunities for many people who would probably never become main characters in TV and film. I really applaud him for that.
I love Spike too. His films really did make us think and uplifted us. He was really the first black filmmaker that made the world stop and pay attention. And with all he has done, I am sure that has had some influence on Tyler Perry.
Like you said, they both have covered some of the same issues. The only difference is how they have chosen to tell their stories. Spike is gifted for what he does and the same with Tyler. So there is no reason to beef.
Plus tyler has oprahs backing...er'body needs to be on tylers good side lol! Seriously, its nerve racking to me how we (african americans) cant seem to get it together. We dont need others to bring us down we do it all ourselves! We have sooooooo much to offer, outside of gold teeth, rap music, and ebonics and we are the ones who need to realize that!! great video
Instead of spike hating on tyler cause that is what he doin' he needs to learn, help, grow, encourage & WORK. Tyler is a crossover artist something spike never really had with is what i love tyler for cause he is bringing different races in so they can see we as american americans are not a sterotype. U dont see john singleton or the hughes brothers bashing there fellow directors. If anything they need to join together...wow that would be crazy!
I agree, I wish they could come together and do something great.
