More then likely it was a 1967 promo, but still an early one. Probably aired towards the end of S1 run. Likely April-May...Could even have been a post season promo to run during the summer (Rerun) period. Either way...Still is a nice find...I can accept the VHS issues...Not likely to find anything like this in DVD quality. hehe A lot of these were just quickly and haphazardly thrown together in a relatively short time by the network...and usually didn't bother with using official graphics.
Something else I noticed -- the 'hi-fi' signal on top of the screen on the first scene. No t.v. hi-fi in 1966. (As a 44-yr old, I'm embarrassed to have only just noticed that. Peharps at 44, my brains getting slower)..
@90321250 Actually, VHS started in 1978. These tapes were purchased through eBay and someone else recorded these commercials. I assume the original owner used a Sony BetaMax.
@JETFRIV Yeah, about that jittery playback; does everything you see look like that? Try not to stack magnetic tapes on or near speakers or current carrying wire too. But thank you for sharing the cultural artifact. It was the height of televisual art.
Wow. They didn't have the music yet, or the logo, hadn't figured out the tone they wanted to set with the series yet. Truly a vital piece of TV history. As for the Devil in the Dark footage, I'd be willing to bet they had some of it in the can already by then. Was this recording made on an old-school VTR like in "Auto Focus"?
@JETFRIV As with TV shows made today, back in those days a lot of the episodes were already filmed in advance of the premiere date and additionally not filmed in order of the air dates. Therefore "Devil in the Dark" which wasn't aired until later in the series but was filmed very early, ended up being in this promo. The first episode aired "The Man Trap" was not the first episode filmed.
Yes, but "The Devil in the Dark" wasn't filmed until January 1967 (the 24th episode to be filmed since the start of regular production in May '66). So, as JETFRIV says, this cannot be a 1966 promo. It's very interesting though, as the network appears to have impressed a style of their own on the promo which is rather different from the series itself.
@frow9405 "Devil in the Dark" was filmed between 12-23 January 1967 and aired on 9 March 1967, It was produced four episodes from the end of the first season's production block and thus was not filmed very early and held back.
It's a wonder anyone watched.

@JETFRIV That "hi-fi" signal actually came from the VHS recorder that I dubbed with. It does that the first few seconds of playing the tape.

@Genius7277 wich type of video tape DID you used to record this then?
90321250 7 months ago
@Genius7277 but VHS didn't exist until 1976. On what kind of tape is this commercial original recorded?

That cannot (logically) be a 1966 promo, as there are scenes in it from episode # 26 (Devil in the Dark), which was made in 1967.
