I had an '85 Fiero SE - probably the most fun car I've ever owned, but the mechanical problems were unbearable. It needed a Quad-4 engine or something better than the "Iron Duke" that came with it. Still feel a bit wistful when I see one in a junkyard.
When I first saw this as a kid, I was like "holy shit" you'll be able to buy a Ferrari type car for under 10 grand. Then I read about it in the mags - and the inevitable comparos to the MR2, which, while much more expensive, killed it in every possible way. Oh well.
@8584zender Motorweek did a comparison of the two for the 1988 models, and concluded that the MR2 was slightly better than the Fiero in most categories, but said that the Fiero was much more fun and comfortable to drive. I think it was mostly the new suspension, since in 1984-87 the Fiero had the same front end as a Chevelle.

The Fiero was smokin' hot...especially when it was on fire, which it often was.

The platform for many a Ferrari and Lamborghini kit car back in the day. Also the car that Ferris Bueller's sister drove ;-)
