  • This device is an AC capacitor. The meter jumps from 1.5 to 4.5 amps when the 1/4HP motor is turned on. Because the motor has no load, most of the current is 'wasted'. The capacitor 'recycles' this unused current, reducing total current. Most motors have some load and thus the reduction in current won't be as significant. If the 1/4HP motor powered a 1/4HP load, there would be virtually no reduction. Most homes and small businesses aren't billed on current so the savings is not direct.
