He's great....but the only problem I have with him, and other great cellists like him (especially ones that come from Slavic countries) are too rough with some of the baroque and classical music. They just don't know how to treat. He's just too heavy and sustains too much for the earlier classical style this was written for.
First of all, Starker is Hungarian and Hungary is not a Slavic country. (Learn your geography.) Second of all you should be so lucky to be able to play the cello and music like Starker. He phrasing and articulation is perfect and perhaps you need to listen a bit more careful. But for sure please be careful to make ignorant comments about geniuses such as Starker.
i will be forever saddened by the fact that janos starker never collaborated with heifetz on a recording. these are the two most accomplished musicians of the 20th century. dominate their instruments better than any other musician.
I heard him demonstrate this at Yale in a small room during a master class. To me,. Starker was at his best on Boccherini and contemporary music. Here, he was capable of creating an eloquent tapestry and of transcending the cello.
His boccherini cello concerto in Bb is monumental as well.Excellent cadenza he wrote himself :)

Only genius notices Starker is a genius. High quality stuff. His music is attached to one's mind without excessive or even fake emotional attachment

Perfect and very musical, but I wish he made a bit more dynamic contrast in the Adagio

Perhaps he is not technically gifted enough to play them. Perhaps you could teach him. Perhaps not.
