Well..you definitely need a better dojo. What was passed through generations can't be found just in a few days as long as its legit. Just a suggestion. But I understand everybody has their own path. You have a right to choose your own, and I wish you goodluck.
@ClockworkWielder, now I'm back to think, averages from whom? that skill could be from watching some samurai movies. The way they attack or responding to an attack is simply average. And I'm not sure about rating peoples from their potential as you need to know them and have some valid sword art experience to do it. Are you a kendoka or learning any sword martial art? just curious..
@ClockworkWielder, you've got to be kidding. Above average?? you can pick anybody from the street, give him a shinai, and he'll perform exactly the same.
lol... i wish me and my cousins had those suit things and gloves... we've broken many thumb nails haha not to mention the welts ... sooooo much fun... anywhere i can find a video demonstrating techniques?
you treat shinais as wooden clubs not swords. The movements of the guy who tries iaido (battojutsu would be better) is ridicilous. I am sure it would be better with more training but you sure have to practice kendo in order to understand the logic behind the movements of the katana.
@elessararagorn no you are wrong about the way you treat Shinais. You are supposed to treat the Shinai as a sword so that you can understand the real deal. After all if you can use it as a weapon then it is a weapon. However I do agree with you that they need to practice Kendo but they have to understand it first they cannot just know what it is and practice without understanding.
I like that one. It looked more like kenjtsu freestyle. But maybe you could learn better, if you treat a hit like what it would be, a fatal death strike. Then get some distance and start from the beginning, but thats just my opinion. The art is to hit and not to get hit, what I definatly still have to learn :-D.
Looks like fun. Good thing you never claimed it was Kendo, otherwise you would be flamed and flamed and flamed.
What I find remarkable is that this free fight looks much better (and much more like a trained style of fighting, at least the white bogu guy) than many videos uploaded here which say to show Kendo. Fun to watch.
Can you please write a bit more about this clip? I'm a beginner at kendo, and i've been often wondering why there is a need for such unnatural movements, and postures.
Now that i've seen a fight like this where NO kendo whatsoever is being applied, apart from the equipment it all makes some sense.
I guess u don't get to see fights like this since no one would allow you to do it and disgrace kendo. Though it seems like you have a sensei back there watching...

Ya know, I imagine that real samurai fights were probably much like this. Only that the on first contact between blade and body part someone would get seriously injured.
Watch the film Rashomon, there is a scene which looks very much like this.
No scene in that film looks anything like this. None of the depictions of the altercation in the forest look anywhere near as haphazard as this. Furthermore, saying that, "real samurai fights were probably much like this," makes no logical sense.
It's perfectly OK for me you're having fun with shinais and so on, but please, listen this: Kendo equipment, sword and armour, like yours, have been designed for a safe kendo practice. It doesn't work for free style because it protects specific parts of your body of specific ways of hitting (cutting, actually). You are hitting in a very strong way (sometimes hammering) and Kendo armour, specially the head, is not enough protection for your style. It can derive in really serious injuries.

Nicely done! Favorited your video. ;)
Btw, do you have extra padding at the ears? From what I heard last time, there was a deaf Kendo guy because he was hit at the ears while wearing a normal 'Men', since the Kendo 'Men' doesn't have padding/protection at the ears.
Frankly they shouldn't be using kendo bogu for this kind of brawl. The minute they stoop to the level of random bashing, it is meaningless to use bogu. If they want to bash the living daylights out of each other, they'd be better off wearing hockey and American football pads.
I'm a kendoka and I find this offensive.

They strike each other with full swing. My teacher used to tell me, "are you splitting a wood? Why do u strike like that?"
It seems to be just fun, but I do not want to be one of them. It will hurt each other physically and easily breaks their good relationship.

it's not kendo, of course. It seems more like gekken or shiai of some kenjutsu ryuha. Or maybe of some non-traditional discipline.
I like it, it seems they're aggressive... better than a lot of videos seen around.

For Kendo, yes, you're only allowed to hit on the top of the head.
But since these folks are doing free-style, there'll be a concern for the ears area, isn't it?
jackchn 3 years ago
which, in itself, shouldn't be done. learn the martial art THEN spar properly.
shinai free-style can not only injure others, but urself.
in kendo, we practice tenouch. which is the practice of squeezing down on the shinai to stop it, yet hit the opponent.
and what's with the guys hocket glove...
