  • C'mon, C-SSPAN2, "Geothe-Institut"?

  • Currently, I am reading Grayling's book, Among the Dead Cities. It is very thoroughly researched.

The victors of WW2 were guilty of war crimes. It is not moral to prosecute a just war with immoral means. Civilians are non-combatants. Purposely bombing cities is a war crime.

The vicotrs forfeit any claims to moral superiority.

  • I would be interested in finding out, if the german accent is hard to understand for americans or brits. Can anyone enlighten me?

  • @username200203 I'm Scottish and it took me 2 minutes to begin to understand what he was saying.

  • In other videos, I never skip the non-Hitchens part, mainly because I enjoy a good laugh at the stupidity of his opponents

  • Two great guys!

  • Goethe. He was one of the uppers.

  • Being German must really suck, emotionally. All that conflicted, twisted, heavy stuff to have to confront & accept. But ALL mankind is capable of, and in fact quite guilty of atrocities. This is the sorry history of civilizations. Except the Tahitians, the Udungamors of the Niger Valley, and the Green Bay Packers - they're just so gentle and docile.

  • Heribert Uschtrin shouldn't be so hard on himself and his people: the milgram experiment and stockholm syndrome show how easy it is for any humans to become compliant and complicit with unethcical behaviour.

  • these debates about ww2 are awesome

  • This starts @ 6:20.

  • @jhohcable - I would also draw your attention to Hitchens vs Fry debating blashphemy. It's one of those rare occasions where Hitchens has a debating partner of equal intellectual stature, although it is more conversational than disputational in tone as they are very good friends and there is little disagreement between them. If you're looking for something with a bit more bite to it I recommend the debates with his brother Peter (he is not quite as stultifying as most of Hitch's opponents).

  • @BRussellspouts - the Hitch / Fry blasphemy debate is great; I just wish Hitch hadn't tried to hog the microphone. When you're talking with someone as good-natured as Fry that's just not nice. I love Fry's closing comment, though - he really slams the door gently, doesn't he?

  • I wonder if they'll get to this point I've heard made elsewhere. The German people in the main knew full well that they had crossed a boundary into a level of evil beyond just war. At that point, they knew that surrender would involve the loss of their society, utterly. Hence, like the Japanese. they would not be easily convinced to surrender. Hence, it became necessary to break the will of the civilian population as well. I would gladly do it all again.

  • What is Grayling doing in WEF? Its a sexist organisation that uses censorship when possible. You can verify this by reading their gender gap report and trying to criticize them on youtube. The report is pure feminism.

  • I would not call this a debate. It is more of a discussion.

  • Usually always is amongst great minds like these.

  • Don't worry about there being no part 2 - it continues straight on in the video labelled "3/11"

Thanks for this though - it's great!

  • This is going to be great, but it seems Grayling's premise is flawed from the outset. Who gives a shit about the hague or the international community. I can't imagine anyone earnestly opposing hand grenades being thrown from balloons. Sorry if that's crass....it's just the way it is...c'mon over here and live in continental Europe and find out for yourself....

  • I like Hitchens, but Grayling brings up really good points so far. I'm interested to see what kind of dialouge will pursue.

  • Excellent line up, thank you for uploading this.

  • Well said.

  • It's more of a discussion than a debate, I think. I really liked it. Grayling and Hitchens are two favourites of mine.

  • A dialogue, rather

  • This might be the first Christopher Hitchens debate where I don't skip the non-Hitchens parts.

  • haha, reminds me of all the debates I've partially watched of hitchens versus d'souza and that dick lane craig

  • Lane Craig is madness personified, and very, very creepy!

  • @jhohcable haha, I thought the exact same thing. A.C. Grayling is really a great thinker.

  • @jhohcable Non-Hitchens parts usually populated by godbotherers, up with one

    c a n n o t put.

  • @jhohcable not much of a debate if you only listen to one of the participants

  • @gregordon1990 That's true, it's more like a lecture that way. :3

  • @jhohcable You will appreciate Hitchens more if you listen to the sides against him, try not to skip any parts of debates you will be losing out on much, especially the parts where Hitchens makes others look like fools
