These days I work on USCG rescue H-60s at Elizabeth City, N.C. We watched the last F-14 being inducted NARF before it closed . Kind of sad to watch the dwindling line of aircraft outside of our hangar. We were the induction and departure point. (South Mat / MAC Terminal)

They were easy to work on. I worked on EA-4Js in VAQ-33. Very low maint m/h aircraft. I was on the Nimitz, and was the AIMD Hyd . Shop LPO. (83-87) I later worked at NARF (Structures/Operations) on the same F-14s that I saw on the Nimitz.. Part of the early A-4s job was to fight against Mig 17s. While on DET to Miramar in 72 we went into the Top Gun Hangar and we were looking at a brand new, one of the very first, F-14s, and met CDR. Randy Cunningham, who showed us around the new plane.

@xTomcatsForeverVF84x - I agree, I was a Plane Capt. and AMS at Top Gun from 89-93. I worked on the A-4's. If I'm not mistaken, was VF-84 the Jolly Rogers with the skull and cross bones? I miss those days too.

@xTomcatsForeverVF84x -I worked on A-4's for four years in the Navy and also worked on the F-16 in the Wisconsin Air National Guard. The A-4 was great! Maintenance was a lot easier than the F-16. I guess you could compare it to working on a hot rod from the 50's and then working on a Porsche. I miss working on A-4's. It really is a jet that is overlooked as far as popularity, but it was a huge work horse in Vietnam, was a Blue Angel for over 10 years, and was the backbone of Top Gun.

P.S. The Japanese never held 100's of thousand of US POW's. During the entire war the US only had 130,00 POW's. Most in German hands. The Japanese tended to execute or work their POW's to death.

I hear you. But postulate this. A world where nobody stood in the way of countries like Russia or China. I don't believe in massive US involvement unless absolutely necessary (i.e., not Iraq). However, I do believe we need to be strong enough to scare people.

And I am sorry to say it, but the fate of US POW's would have played no significant part the decision to drop the bomb or in Operations Olympic or Coronet. They were already in for in excess of a million casualties.

cody1247, Yes, TOPGUN was moved to NAS Fallon to be merged with the Naval Strike and Air Warfare Center.

It looks like some of this was filmed at NAS Fallon, near RenoNevada (USA). It was great for air combat maneuvering and live-fire exercises with multiple types of aircraft flying. When I flew there, I was an F-18A driver, it was when the A-4, F-5, some A-7's and A-6 were still active or reserve duty(the A-4 as an agressor) as well as F-14's. It was some great clear weather flying. While at NAS Key West I saw the F-22 Raptor,and the F-5. I am glad that they are still flying as agressors

Regarding the superiority of Russian fighters: How many flight hours do Russian pilots average? The U.S. Navy, for example flies their tactical pilots all the time. Pilots get hundreds of hours of flight time, constantly practicing ACM and CAS, in the eventuality that their skills may one day be needed against an enemy with a decent air arm . The airplane may be the best thing since sliced bread, but if the pilot sucks, it's worthless.
