I heard the J Mascis cover first... It's a lot more sad and desperate... really captures the feeling of the song for me with his minimalistic approach to performing the song... one guy one guitar, and a sad silent forfeit expression... very sincere... It's amazing how musical tastes change over the course of time. I remember my sister listening to Edie when we where in high school, way back when, and I much I hated her What I am song. I stumbled apon this song, like many others here, during the episode of Cold Case. It came into my life shortly after my best friend died in my arms. The words of this song capture the emotions I felt and still feel over his loss. Thank you Edie., being alone is not the best way to be, but it is now and then.
