Country has nothing to do with politics, both sides are fucking us. Real country music is about living, making mistakes, and redemption. No real country musician is a saint or tries to portray themselves to be so.
That's Roy Nicholes (sp?) playing lead. Often copied, but never matched. He passed away a few years back. He quit Merle to go lay jazz and tried to come back, but Merle had moved on. he passed a few years later. Biff Hamlin on drums. First met them all in the 60's and again in the 80's when I played thru Texas.
Getting old...names are messed up. After sitting and listening to WMB I realized that it was Biff Adams on drums and Norm Hamlet on Steel. That is Roy Nichols on lead. Not sure of the guy on the piano. I believe that's Bobby Wayne (he wrote Harold's Super Service) and Bonnie Owens (Buck's ex) singing back-up. Had to think too hard for all of that.
Nope, Tigerman, that's not Scotty. It's one of the Bakersfield Boys. Can't think of his name, but his style is much like the guitarist who played with Buck Owens. Same town.
Got it. I grew up- or tried- in Visalia, just an hour or so north of Bakersfield. This was in the sixties, so I'm old. But, even though I like rock and rock (still do, at least the real stuff not this American Idol garbage), I also listened to a lot of country, back when, I think, it was in it's prime. Sure, Hank Was gone, and Patsy Cline, but there were a lot of people making real music. Those on this video are some of 'em, and, as a guitar player myself, I steal as many of those licks as I can
I love real country music- as well as blues, jazz, and roots rock. merle is the real deal, not a jerk like Crank Williams Jr. or Tubby Keith. My favorites are probably the real Hank WIlliams and Johnny Cash. Real men, real songs. It has nothing to do with that confederate horseshit. Rebel Son is a shitty band that plays moronic songs. Skynyrd, now there's a redneck band that can get it done. I even play Sweet Home Alabama. Can't resist that riff. I've been in bands for 45 years. Music, a unifier
@slownoman THANKYOU! ahh no one has that musical choice anymore. Jr. is a fag. and i only listen to rebel son when im drunk. they got some good drinkin songs and you cannot deny that.
I thought you were supposed to say THANKS for posting the song for all of us to hear. And not to voice your opinions about politics and your vulgar words.
Sorry if any of the kids are ever on this site.
I'm talking about the ones that don't already use the vulgar language.
Great post!!! Thanks very much. Love the instrumental solos. This is what live shows are all about -- rather than the 2 to 3 mins. of studio recordings meant for playing on the radio.
good song obama is making it harder for the working man when he said it would be better. just have to keep ticking. now this is back before country music had gone to shit.
Yes, this is real country music..I bought this Merle song when it was an 8 track..It was great then and it is still great..We're putting together a band here in Pueblo, CO that is doing these songs and we're doing them like this.
The only reason fucking liberals have the right to say anything is because I fought in wars so they can live on our milk and honey thank a soilder next time for your rights to be free and if not shut the fuck up
No of course not. Liberals didn't spend our money on Mexican/American, WW1, WW2, Korea, and Vietnam wars, no of course that was Republicans who started those. Your ignorance of history is disturbing but what do expect from soneone who's too busy giving Queef Odormann a "Lewinsky" day and night. You're a fucking dolt. Why don't you and Chrissy Mathews give each other a "tingle" up each other's legs.

Truthfully, I'm still a year and a half away from my B.A. in Political Science, so I'm no expert by any stretch of the imagination. However, Fascism and National socialism both exhibit a majority of political and economic parallels. The key difference, historically, is that Fascist states tend to be slightly more economically conservative. Fascism and "national socialism" definitely are closer relatives than "national socialism" and "socialism" (because of the difference in political views)
The Nazi's "National Socialism" is the same as U.S.S.R.'s "Communism." They are both ideologies that failed due to poor education of the population paired with mass state propaganda. Fascism isn't inherently bad, but it relies on the leaders general good will and public's good education The reason why Germany's "National Socialism" is compared so often to "Socialism" in our own country, is lack of education. The public education in the U.S. is terrible compared to other "modernized" countries.
I remember when I was halfway through college... it used to be so cool to know everything! "Fascism isn't inherently bad"... LMAO
Wait til you get out into the REAL world and file a few income tax returns... then tell me how the "political theories" that they're teaching you stand up in real life!
Socialism, communism, fascism, "mixed economy", welfare state, "public option"... they're ALL just euphemisms for armed robbery, at gunpoint, by the Mafia that calls itself the "State."
Merle is brill, love his music and traditional songs, they resonate with workin men all round the world who get in and out of trouble..life isnt black and white....drink your beer in the tavern!!!!
yeah, merle has smoked his fair share of dope...BUT he didn't go broadcasting it all over the place like willie + the lefties never 'forgave' merle for okie, which was written as a joke from the point of view of an uneducated person of merle's father's generation looking around at all of the cultural changes of the late 60's.
merle was for hillary. once obama got elected he then supported obama, which merle felt was the thing to do since he was president after all. the lefties i was referring to were the rock critics of the late 60's when the country was polarized by hawks and doves. merle was hip with the grateful dead, gram parsons, john fogerty, chris hillman, etc., but the left wing press of the era turned their back on the hag. and even if merle does support the left NOW that does not mean they accept HIM.
unlike today's 'artists', merle writes most of his own material. he can do that because he has actually lived his songs. merle is his own man. he makes a stand and stands his ground. he doesn't care what anyone else thinks or which way the wind blows!
willie is a media wh*re. he will do anything for attention. he even tries to appeal to people who don't like country music. 'outlaw'? willie sold out when urban cowboy came along and he started doing cross over stuff. when he went back to texas in the late 60's, he didn't change his music, he changed his appearance! he didn't even record red headed stranger until the outlaw movement was in full swing.
now hold on there lil chickee nuggee, my boy willie aint never done nothin to nobody and no good to not nothin.... u dont know what u say bout a legend boy and if i had somethin to say id tell u to go back to another country go back in time for all i care....
willie is all about willie. he makes sure everybody knows he smokes dope and believes in reincarnation and let his hair grow long so all the lefties in control of the media will listen to him when they/the left won't normally listen to country.

hohoho looks like we got a tin foil hat crackerjack over here..... yeah boy big willies in league with the reptilian socialists who control yer tv thats why he smokes weed not to feel good or nothin..... hooboy good luck chuck
man oh man oh man you need to get out and talk to people man go to a bar go to a bus stop just go! all sorts of people smoke not just hippy dippys lol lol republicans, democrats, conservatives, liberals, maybe even a few looney toonies lik yerself buddy boy
go back to 1969. the great generation gap. the cultural divide. the hawks and the doves. merle was considered a conservative. this made him un-hip with the youth movement. the rock critics of the era never 'forgave' merle nor did he ever win back their respect fully. merle is an under appreciated artist due to his perceived conservative views due to the left not understanding the humor of okie.
Have you ever watched the credits for ANY movie or television program? There are alot of jewish names in hollywood, considering that they are only 2% of the population.
there is a significant difference between socialists and communists. Communism is typically an economic AND political system where the state controls everything. Rarely are there elections in a true communist state. Socialism is generally seen only as an economic system (by political scientists, not us regular folk). Hence, it is still possible to have a socialist democracy.
Therefore a socialist democracy and capitalist democracy differ only by the fact that socialist democracies center more on economic equality than a capitalist society with roughly the same political freedoms. A communist system (being both political and economic) centers on economic freedoms, but grants very little political freedom. That said, I mean no disrespect when I say: Turn off Fox News and read a book! :)
First of all, let me say that I have never watched Fox News in my life, I don't find much use for ANY news program, as they all go out of their way to find the most horrible things in the world to report on.
Secondly, I am not in favor of a Capitalist society either. Capitalists and Communists co-exist, don't they?
Instead I am in favor of Free Enterprise, the differance being that Free Enterprise uses business to help people, where Capitalism uses people to help business.
now why you go say a silly thing like that? when i say i dont like merle? i guess in your head everythings one or the other, black or white, christian or commie, willie or merle LOL like i said go out and talk to people you might find somebody who has multiple records in their collection
When I hear this song I think about my dad. This song came out when I was young and always reminds me of him. He owned a gas station and would get up around 430 am 6 days a week and would work till 10pm. on sundays he would sleep most of the day. he did that for like 20 years until he sold the station. He died in 1993 from lung cancer. I sure miss him.
I can relate Jeff and I am sorry about your dad. I lost mine in 05 to lung cancer as well and this song reminds me of my dad as well. We don't really know what work is like they knew back then but I am affraid things are changing and we might just be in for a real awakening!!! Keep your dad's memories close to your heart forever!

Yeah, the sax solo is so cheesy 1970's Benny Hill sounding. HAG is a great songwriter for sure. Greatest ever? Probably not. He's definatley on the short list.
Merle can do and say whatever he wants. He can belong to any political party he wishes. I
just wish people would focus on his great music and stop arguing about politics. jeeesh! Give
it a rest please!

@909830 Roy Nichols made Merle? Listen, I love to hear Roy play so I'm not going to
waste time putting him down, but are you serious? Who do you think wrote the songs,
sang the songs and picked out a great band like the Strangers? I'm just going to believe
you were joking or saying that in jest. Roy was great and had his own distinct sound so
nothing bad to say about him in anyway.

Sure, Hank Was gone, and Patsy Cline, but there were a lot of people making real music. Those on this video are some of 'em, and, as a guitar player myself, I steal as many of those licks as I can

@slownoman Son of a bitch! you like country you fucker! AHHHAHA THATS HELLA FUNNY MAN GO HATE ON REBEL sON BUT YOUR LISTENIN TO MERLE!
taylorbelden 1 year ago
I love real country music- as well as blues, jazz, and roots rock. merle is the real deal, not a jerk like Crank Williams Jr. or Tubby Keith. My favorites are probably the real Hank WIlliams and Johnny Cash. Real men, real songs. It has nothing to do with that confederate horseshit. Rebel Son is a shitty band that plays moronic songs. Skynyrd, now there's a redneck band that can get it done. I even play Sweet Home Alabama. Can't resist that riff. I've been in bands for 45 years. Music, a unifier
slownoman 1 year ago 4

A liberal would say more power to ya. Be successful. But don't spend my tax money on discretionary war as the Iraq War was.
Actually, to annoy a Fox News robot, find someone to love and have a great sex life.
sunbro37e6 2 years ago
No of course not. Liberals didn't spend our money on Mexican/American, WW1, WW2, Korea, and Vietnam wars, no of course that was Republicans who started those. Your ignorance of history is disturbing but what do expect from soneone who's too busy giving Queef Odormann a "Lewinsky" day and night. You're a fucking dolt. Why don't you and Chrissy Mathews give each other a "tingle" up each other's legs.

I wonder if you believe there is a differance between Fascism and National Socialism?
BigHonky33 2 years ago
Truthfully, I'm still a year and a half away from my B.A. in Political Science, so I'm no expert by any stretch of the imagination. However, Fascism and National socialism both exhibit a majority of political and economic parallels. The key difference, historically, is that Fascist states tend to be slightly more economically conservative. Fascism and "national socialism" definitely are closer relatives than "national socialism" and "socialism" (because of the difference in political views)
ColbertandStewartpwn 2 years ago
The Nazi's "National Socialism" is the same as U.S.S.R.'s "Communism." They are both ideologies that failed due to poor education of the population paired with mass state propaganda. Fascism isn't inherently bad, but it relies on the leaders general good will and public's good education The reason why Germany's "National Socialism" is compared so often to "Socialism" in our own country, is lack of education. The public education in the U.S. is terrible compared to other "modernized" countries.
ColbertandStewartpwn 2 years ago
LMFAO
I remember when I was halfway through college... it used to be so cool to know everything! "Fascism isn't inherently bad"... LMAO
Wait til you get out into the REAL world and file a few income tax returns... then tell me how the "political theories" that they're teaching you stand up in real life!
Socialism, communism, fascism, "mixed economy", welfare state, "public option"... they're ALL just euphemisms for armed robbery, at gunpoint, by the Mafia that calls itself the "State."
mstetson72 1 year ago 2
May I ask what you do for a living?
I've filed many income tax returns which I believe were in the real world, but what is the preferred reference frame?
and um.. for your opinion on socialism, fascism, and communism. They are only those things if you really don't know what you are talking about.

Merle is brill, love his music and traditional songs, they resonate with workin men all round the world who get in and out of trouble..life isnt black and white....drink your beer in the tavern!!!!
REDBACKDEAD 2 years ago
yeah, merle has smoked his fair share of dope...BUT he didn't go broadcasting it all over the place like willie + the lefties never 'forgave' merle for okie, which was written as a joke from the point of view of an uneducated person of merle's father's generation looking around at all of the cultural changes of the late 60's.
johnrunion 2 years ago 11
"lefties",....lol,...you do know that merle was and is a Obama supporter, right? and not shy to be vocal about........
porkinwitz 2 years ago
merle was for hillary. once obama got elected he then supported obama, which merle felt was the thing to do since he was president after all. the lefties i was referring to were the rock critics of the late 60's when the country was polarized by hawks and doves. merle was hip with the grateful dead, gram parsons, john fogerty, chris hillman, etc., but the left wing press of the era turned their back on the hag. and even if merle does support the left NOW that does not mean they accept HIM.
johnrunion 2 years ago 3
Meh, I'd say I'm more left than right, and I think Okie is a great fuckin' song.
But I know Merle has his own liberal views.
ColbertandStewartpwn 2 years ago
i am a moderate. both the left and the right hate me.
johnrunion 2 years ago
unlike today's 'artists', merle writes most of his own material. he can do that because he has actually lived his songs. merle is his own man. he makes a stand and stands his ground. he doesn't care what anyone else thinks or which way the wind blows!

willie is a media wh*re. he will do anything for attention. he even tries to appeal to people who don't like country music. 'outlaw'? willie sold out when urban cowboy came along and he started doing cross over stuff. when he went back to texas in the late 60's, he didn't change his music, he changed his appearance! he didn't even record red headed stranger until the outlaw movement was in full swing.

now hold on there lil chickee nuggee, my boy willie aint never done nothin to nobody and no good to not nothin.... u dont know what u say bout a legend boy and if i had somethin to say id tell u to go back to another country go back in time for all i care....

willie is all about willie. he makes sure everybody knows he smokes dope and believes in reincarnation and let his hair grow long so all the lefties in control of the media will listen to him when they/the left won't normally listen to country.

ColbertandStewartpwn 2 years ago
go back to 1969. the great generation gap. the cultural divide. the hawks and the doves. merle was considered a conservative. this made him un-hip with the youth movement. the rock critics of the era never 'forgave' merle nor did he ever win back their respect fully. merle is an under appreciated artist due to his perceived conservative views due to the left not understanding the humor of okie.
johnrunion 2 years ago
abc, nbc, cbs, hln, msnbc...yeah...i'd say they all swing to the left.
johnrunion 2 years ago
Socialists and Communists are the same thing.
Have you ever watched the credits for ANY movie or television program? There are alot of jewish names in hollywood, considering that they are only 2% of the population.
BigHonky33 2 years ago
my friend, (or should I say comrade?)
there is a significant difference between socialists and communists. Communism is typically an economic AND political system where the state controls everything. Rarely are there elections in a true communist state. Socialism is generally seen only as an economic system (by political scientists, not us regular folk). Hence, it is still possible to have a socialist democracy.
ColbertandStewartpwn 2 years ago
Therefore a socialist democracy and capitalist democracy differ only by the fact that socialist democracies center more on economic equality than a capitalist society with roughly the same political freedoms. A communist system (being both political and economic) centers on economic freedoms, but grants very little political freedom. That said, I mean no disrespect when I say: Turn off Fox News and read a book! :)
cheers
ColbertandStewartpwn 2 years ago
First of all, let me say that I have never watched Fox News in my life, I don't find much use for ANY news program, as they all go out of their way to find the most horrible things in the world to report on.
Secondly, I am not in favor of a Capitalist society either. Capitalists and Communists co-exist, don't they?
Instead I am in favor of Free Enterprise, the differance being that Free Enterprise uses business to help people, where Capitalism uses people to help business.
BigHonky33 2 years ago
NOW, enough of that talk. We obviously share a common favor of the working man, the Workin' Man Blues, and of course, The Hag. :)
