A lot of videos of Phil on YT (who put out better records than Dylan) are cut short like his life. And I thought death sells. The video of Changes doesn't last long enough to change and it sucks. This video at least gives you a feel of what Phil was like. Download Phil Ochs in Concert ..it's his best work.
This was filmed at a Free Speech Rally held in the spring of 1965 on The Oval at the Ohio State University campus in Columbus, Ohio. The building in the background is Orton Hall. I filmed some of this event in 8mm -- no sound (:-(( -- and you can see it if interested in the "Videos Without Trains" playlist at my channel. This little clip was probably news footage -- you can see a news cameraman in my video.
I don't understand why people have to debate over the music. Politically I am so far to the right that I make Rush Limbaugh look like a liberal, but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy the music. I dare say Phil Ochs and I would agree on nothing. Well nothing except his music. Just listen and enjoy, no matter what your politics. That's the beauty of art - just enjoy.
All these years later, this is the first song that pops into my head when I face stubborn authority. I don't sing it out loud except in the car and the shower, but I sure sing it to myself.
The kid he was singing about in the song did. Phil found Mao's poetry fascinating, but I don't think you could say he supported him. Chinese politics weren't really where he was at.
@nancyzeetoo Here's a snippet from an interview with Phil conducted by Izzy Young (of Broadside Magazine) right after Phil returned to New York from the Chicago Convention:
IZZY: Is there any country where you see a possibility of human advancement?
PHIL: I think Mao could be the most important man going in the world right now.
"God only knows" or "Do it again" at the moment. But I like all the classics. I'm not so sure about "That's not me" but I just listened to a 30 seconds version.
This may be a short clip but for people like me... baby boomers.. it brings back so many memories of the 60's. Phil was a big influence on the way I wanted to live my life and the way I did not. His intellect and devotion to spreading ideas was so admirable. Unfortunately the web of his own psyci and his affinity for drugs and alcohol destroyed him.. Phil Ochs... dearly missed by many. Whoever has these little gems to put up on u tube..many people thank you.
Hells bells, so am I, LOL! Well, truthfully, he's influenced me for more years than I care to admit to, and I thoroughly enjoyed this video, seeing him happy and sassy, enjoying his own performance. What a great man he was and is. Thanks to liam12 for a tremendous video!
phil ochs lives today thru his music , bought an album of his last year ,brilliant , id recommend to go out and buy his records ,a lot better than dillon in my eyes
Phil should be better remembered. There's a story of him riding in a limo with Dylan in the 60's. Dylan played a recording of his new single "Won't You Please Crawl Out Your Window", asked Phil what he thought of it, Phil said he didn't think too much of it... Bob had the limo stop and made Phil get out (turns out Phil was right).
@11xzxzxz Search for "The Early 1960s - A Time of Innocence" and go to 10:20. It's a VERY early performance of "I Ain't Marchin' Anymore" in a coffee house. Later in that same video, there's "Talkin' Cuban Crisis" in the background. (The whole series is actually really good, if you're interested in that era.)
He was a rebel poet who sung his poems with a guitar...

Well Phil's voice is too loud and the sound isn't good here but he was a beautiful man and deserves more than 15 second videos.

I have a pile of Phils records and am indeed facinated by his stuff,
I think you may have more in common with him then you think!!
Phil was a big fan of personal responsibility and the western ideal he really loved real AMERICAN LIBERTY not socialist police state tyranny.
He also really liked the strong independant image John Wayne showed in his films.
That said- he was very anti war and very much for the poor.
Phil's a enigma, he would mock down todays fat anti liberty pseudo libs.

you must love the song "love me, i'm a liberal". I'm liberal (liberal views, not liberal party) , and its one of my favorite songs by phil ochs

You should listen to the whole song. It is a great song about alienation and fish-out-of-water-ness
