Saw them in Osaka last night. Simply amazing (despite the fact that they were using a replacement bass player). Goosebumps crazy good. Hung out and talked to them after the show. Nice guys. It breaks my heart that they are calling it quits. Such a shame.
chomsky is great on a lot of things, but what sense does it make to say that we all have blood on our hands? the US war on Iraq is our responsibility? we must ask: who benefits from it? only the ruling class could, not ordinary people. its like saying that slaves were responsible for slavery while they hadn't yet risen up and overthrown it. it's our responsibility to stop the US government but not our fault that it is what it is. we are the governed not the governors.
that's precisely the same erroneous sentiment of blaming the victim. people don't willingly, consciously "allow themselves to be manipulated." on the contrary, it is the recognition that they are manipulated that marks the beginning of rebellion. imagine telling someone, "you've been systematically lied to, used, abused & exploited--and you are [at least in part] to blame!" it's the ruling class, their corporations, state machinery and parties--democrats & republicans--that swim in blood.
well put -- how's this revision?: if you listen to what he says, he limits who he's talking about to people "who....[are allowing] themselves to be manipulated...."
i mean, we're not all exactly without any clues as to what's going on in the world...and yet people still keep on with what they're doing (whatever that is...).
The Walton family has as much wealth as the bottom 100,000,000 Americans. In Capitalism, wealth is power. Crudely put, that means the most one of the latter could be responsible is 0.0000001% of the Waltons. The Waltons directly exploit many of those 100m - how could their positions be compared in this way? No one wants to be poor and manipulated, but that's the purpose of the system. "Responsibility" is a moralistic, middle class rubric. Let's be concrete. Blame capitalism and its masters.
believe me, i avoid shopping there as much as the next guy does('NT) but to say that people are not responsible for their not engaging in critical thinking is something that i don't agree with.
i mean, if you and i can -- then why can't "they?"
These guys are awsome :)

of course chomsky doesn't "have blood on his hands" himself yet he would be included in the designation "we."
if you listen to what he says, he limits who he's talking about to people "who have allowed themselves to be manipulated...."
