It's his name, just pronounced in Japanese. They didn't translate it from the Japanese word for "light", Hikari, the creator gave him the kanji for the word, but has it pronounced as the English word.

Japanese doesn't have the L sound, they pronounce it as an R-like sound, and it's syllabic, so light is the three syllables RA-I-TO.

Raito is how it's pronounced in Japanese because the T sound is tied to a vowel, like all of the phonetic characters (aside from n). Written in katakana, his name is Ra i to (ライト) even though the kanji he uses for his name is usually pronounced tsuki (月). That also explains Misa's mixup of the pronunciation of his name.
