They forgot the story? More like YOU forgot the story. It's slow pace may not be as ENJOYABLE as films like say, star wars, but the story is still great nonetheless. This, 2 and 6 are still the best Trek movies
The studios think they know better than us! Well I worked in cinema once not that I care to do it again with Dolby digital cinema. I know what to look for and listen for. And there are only a few bluray that ever do meet the technical standards a few and few isn’t good enough in money grabbing scam to rip consumers off. I haven’t new Bluray in 7months now Bluray = EPIC FAIL!
The only thing that wasn’t fucking sorted was the use of DNR and EE that has ruined the film with plastic rubbery like skin tones plus the use of the six-track DOLBY STEREO mix that was monaural surrounds for the rare exclusive 70mm print. Paramount made a complete fake 5.1 mix or 7.1 mix but at least they used DOLBY rather than dtsHDMA because STAR TREK was mixed and released in DOLBY therefore it should use the same sound format.
The fake stereo surrounds on STAR TREK TMP ruins the film!
Gosh, I wonder how your review of 2001:Space Odyssey would be like. What about Solaris?
I had no problem recognizing the characters, Bones were his usual grouchy but humorous self. Spock had gone through the process of Kohlinar and develop from this stage in the film. Kirk has mostly been very ego-centric when it comes to Enterprise. I understand Decker in this matter of course, I would have been pissed off too.
Plus I saw Star Trek the motion picture at the Empire Leicester Square 20 years ago, Star Trek marathon via the original 13KW JBL THX sound system, with sub bass bass that hits hard in the chest.
Its the most watched here the original version and not that fucked up version that the director himself ruined for DVD sigh. It had lousy sound effects editing that sounded like it was put together at the fucking Bournemouth University. The film was edited up by a fucking bind man!
Im watching Star Trek original motion picture right now on the Phillips BDP3000 upscale in six-track Dolby stereo on JBL sound system.
The story in TMP is fine, it just lacks drama, pace and the characters actually being recognizable from the Original Series - just take a look at how mean Kirk is in TMP, the way he treats Decker and even McCoy and Spock.
Fast forward to Star Trek 2009. Story is crap, pacing is crap, FX and Enterprise design crap, writers crap, don't get me started on the director and guess what?! The only character remotely close to a true portrayl is McCoy.
The movie has a lot of political nuance. 1979 was a peroid in the cold war that U.S. policy was changed under Jimmy carter to pacifism. (If we don't spy on them and don't arm ourselves we won't look like a threat.) As you know the Soviets continued to arm themselves with nuclear missiles and passed the U.S. in tackticle advantage. Reagan was elected in 1980 and reversed this policy and the U.S. was back in the arms race. This resulted in the colapse of the Soviet Union a decade later.
Neillil411, ur comment on the Carter's foreign policy in comparison 2 Reagan's return 2 Containment is a political misconception. Reagan indebted us in a useless arms race the Soviets were already far gone in. Our spending in these areas changed nothing the Soviets had already done 2 themselves. Reagan's arms escalation was a solution 2 what he saw as a decrease in US military power. In the end it was our fortune the USSR collapsed or had we continued down that path we might have gone with them.
This was, and is, my fav of all the Trek films. It has that voyage into the unknown and "To boldly go where no man has gone before." that the other ones lack. Not everyone want's mere battles and explosions.
7:18 is a common video camera issue when videoing from a TV the camera produces a green or cyan like colour and this is also typical of poor telecine and colour correction on some DVD to bluray titles that goes back to the VHS laserdisc like Terminator2! YUCK COLOUR!
So anyway that's what happens when you aim a video camera at the TV! Avatar has the same colour issue when Sully is awakened and the lights show a slight hint of poor green oh dear what sad bluray disc it was!
the transporter malfunction is pretty horrific if you pay real close attention you can see their faces shifting and moving around like jello....pretty gross. makes you wonder what blob of shit materialized back at starfleet.....
for the first time we are going to see one of the stars of the original show??
hey anally retentive reviewer, spoke was there before kirk he was science officer in the original pilot and was a star of the show so we's already seen oen, geez, your usless i'm outta here
hey virgin dickweed, he meant he was on the enterprise for the first time IN THIS MOVIE. dumbass. go be a short dick somewhere else. get your facts right before you decide to make yourself look like an imbecile.
Also there is a missing sound effect, this is where Sulu presses a button on helm control after receiving orders from captain Kirk to change its height above the intruder. The sound should be left front and it’s a high frequency clicking sound! Check out the laserdisc if you don’t believe me.
Also when Scotty talks on the intercom right front channel warning the captain the engines are not balance his voice as echo reverb, this is not on the original DOLBY mix listen to the laserdisc! Also the sound filters into the surrounds which is tail, tail sign of FAKE STEREO SURROUNDS!
The surrounds should be mono and should only sound as and when with discrete DOLBY film mixes.
And yes discrete 6channel sound has been around since the late 1950’s and got better in the 70’s with DOLBY STEREO 70mm way, way, before any of the other 6 channel digital formats CDS DOLBY SR-D dts and SDDS.
Coincidentally, I just saw this movie 3 days ago...and I have to agree with the points you brought up. The script was a horrible. This thing should've been done for TV, one episode!!! It felt like the film was made up mainly of lengthy establishing shots.
If you want mindless violence watch die hard plebeian.

Hollywood loved Carter and this was one of their ways of validating his policy.
Carter:
1. If we scan them (Spy on the Russians) it will look hostile and they will destroy us.
2. If we put up our shields (Build misiles) that could also be interperated as hostile.
Reagan:
1. Scan them (Launch spy satilites)
2. Raise shields (Fund SDI)
