  • this is worth watching...

  • put onion in ice water for 5 min

  • if you have a goood knife...you can do evrything...and so well

  • If the Chimpanzee don't eat Onions, we don't eat Onions!!!

  • If you were Emeril, you would have said "like such."

That guy drove me crazy (Emeril, that is) the way he butchered the english language! lol!

  • that is not the best way to peel it.

chop the top off , chop it in half, then peel each half. so much easyer than this. dont use a knife to peel the skin off. that idea is absurd.

  • so helpful! i've seen people cut onions like this, but i could never figure ouy exactly how to do it! thanx!

  • To avoid crying because of your onion, try to keep a sharp knife. One it will not bruise the onion and release more juice two it helps the cutting go much faster.

  • slicing would be against the grain...with the grain, as he did, is known as a julienne

  • @dvsn23 Julienne is a match stick sizing cut, nothing to do with the grain

  • at about 2:20 I am no longer able to see

  • put the onions in refrigerator for 20minutes before u cut

  • i will give u a tip that my chef told me when u want to cut thin slice's let your fingers guide u watch thge way he holds the onion and watch how the knife is resting on his fingers

  • notice how he holds the knife and how his other hand holds the onion while he is cutting. That is very important. yey food.

  • wow so much wastage xD, usually i just cut the top, cut in half, THEN take the skin off xD

  • @shadow0mega exactly!

  • wow so much wastage xD, usually i just cut the top, cut in half, THEN take the skin off xD

  • I wear swimming goggles

  • Doing it near an open flame helps too.

  • Breathing has nothing to do with the sting, it's reaction of sulfides in the onion creating weak sulfuric acid in your tears.

I'm quite sensitive to it so I use goggles from chemistry lab a few semesters ago.

Look like a fool but quite effective if you're chopping a mess of onions.

  • @mnyfrsh sulfenic acid****

  • I make the Guatamalans prep the onions.

  • I like to put on scuba gear when I deal with onions, plus you look really cook with the air tanks on.

  • yeah, get a 5 gallon bucket of water, drop your onion in the bucket, and slice away or better yet, get a scuba diving mask and wear that, or as a last resort, just use a sharp, not kinda sharp, but SHARP knife, so you dont smash the onion cells and squirt it all over the place, simple.

  • after using your knife on your still you should most importantly clean off your knife with atleast a paper towel. Silver fibers stay on the knife and you'll see it on your product. That's contamination

  • I keep my onions in the fridge so the gas doesn't escape as quickly, because that's what makes you tear up. Also, a good trick to remember how to dice up an onion is PLANKS STICKS CUBES :) heard it from tyler florence on food network and it stuck with me

  • get a slap chop XD

  • Nice job, just a minor point, should you wipe the steel filings off the knife after sharpening it?.

  • In Tansaniya they cool the onion and put it in an onion scraper

  • if you wear contacts, they dont affect you. lol well at least not to me.

  • cool

  • its so much easier to cut it in half first and then peel it off

  • someone who used to work in the kitchen of some restaurant told me that turning on the burner of the stove will help.

I also notice that I hardly cry when I am cutting the onions next to the stove when the fire is on.

  • ... Or you could just half it down the middle and take off the skin when it's in two halves? This seems fidgety to me, but ah well.

  • just put onion in water, it will help u to stop crying, but i will prefer not as you lose the flavour.

  • just watching this makes my eyes teary haha.

  • oooooOoooOoo sharp knife

  • Get someone else to cut it for you.

  • Mmm ok, Thanks!

  • or, how to slice onions properly. You can split an onion, but you can't split an infinitive.

  • this video made me cry from watching it

  • When you slide the knife on the sharpening thing, doesnt the knife get lots of small, small metal parts that goes in to whatever you are cuttin' ? : O

  • why did use a peeler to get the skin off?

  • This is very helpful. How do you keep from crying when cutting an onion?

  • You slice both the ends off the onion then you wet them under the tap that should stop the crying.

  • try to spread knife with cold water

  • sorry, not spread. dunk.

  • Try chewing some gum while cutting them

  • cut the onion with your eyes closed.

  • tilt your head upwards, as the gas rises it gets trapped in your eyes while looking down.

  • put the whole onion in cold water in the fridge for an hour before cutting. It was tested on the Food Network and came out the only proven method.

  • I doubt that there are any "trick" for it, you just have to get used to it - more you cut, the less onion will make you cry.

  • breath from your mouth :)

  • i saw a show once that said if you cut the gland out of the bottom before you cut the onion you won't tear. i haven't tried it personally but i will to see if it's true.

  • cut the onion in water trust me it works

  • true..!

  • put your knife and onions into water. After that take it out and cut.

    Hope it helps :)

  • You can rinse the onion in cold water, or just keep at it and after time you get used to it.

  • You put it in the freezer for 10 minutes before cutting it.

  • That is the correct answer Neon :)

Even though this video made my eyes tear up a bit, so maybe for me it's all psychological

  • breathe through ur mouth :)

  • i chew gum while i do it. it works

also, keep the knife sharp. that helps too

  • @bearnurse1

    You don't! Nothing really helps.

Just try to keep your face as far as possible from the onion while preparing it without losing sight of what you're doing! !

  • Thanks you for making this video never new the root could help you.
