@jauchiu Very true, we all had fun that day (including the guy's gf who did part of the shooting). He actually got scolded by me for "launching" the plane in such a half-assed way though ;-)
When I get the chance I will, my only woes with toy-grade flying models is that they will sooner than later wear out their motors, moving parts and batteries, as they have no bearings or way to easily replace worn out components. Not for heavy users...
After crash some times and land in the *sand* clear/check the gearbox.
If you hear to much noise or the plane is weak, apply more pressure between the main gear and the motor gear. A piece of folded paper under the motor can do it.
Tip: to fly in the beach, close the holes of the motor plastic capsule to prevent damage to the gear box. The motor will be hot after the flights, but it's ok.
My motors and the gears are pretty much goners since one of the propellers snapped, more than a year ago. I'm on the look for cheap component I could throw in to mod it to full flight capability. The original setup quickly lost power power in a matter of a handful of flights, and most of it was during the making of this video.
Yup, I always use rechargeable batteries for my TXs, especially if they are also used for charging. In general they work as well if not better than alkalines, unless the electronics suck ass.
i just got it right but i havent tried it yet but i tried how long the signal is and if im like 40 cm away it stops working any clues on what happened ?
Use only fresh alkaline or topped up rechargeable batteries. If those are ok, open up the TX and check the connection between the antenna and the circuit board, I had to solder my antenna to the brass piece connecting it to the board to ensure good contact (use a heavy duty solder gun for that kind of job)
Lol, this never happened to me so far but I can see it happening...there must be something funny in the way you install the battery and shift the weight. Anyway, this is a toy rather than a true RC plane, and soon its limits will be reached.
I've still got mine, but the motors are rubbish by now (they were pretty weakened when this video was shot) and one of propellers broke... I'm still trying to find a way to mod it/revive it though.
i used to have one of these buh i broke it by flying it into a river lol dnt meen to tho :P buh now ive got an boeing 787 its realy good lol. i fink im goin to buy anotha 1 of these plane tho cos i reli liked it lol
GET ONE NOW, I can keep mine in the air for 2mins ( 2.5 if I'm lucky!). they're dead durable: last week I flew mine into a tree about 10m high; it was up there for three days! I would go out every day to see if it had moved. On the fourth day I couldn't see it in the tree. I looked around the tree and eventually found it in a hedge. I brought it home charged it up and it still works fine!
Well...how long it will stay up in the air depends a lot on battery conditions, external temperature, motor heat/wear etc. The ideal would be a fresh LiPo battery and new motors on a cold day with no wind and nice, dense air to provide lift. If you're lucky enough to have bought a DeLuxe version with a LiPo instead of a nasty NiMH, then good for you :-)
i got one for my birthday and i didnt know how to charge it but now i do and when i put the batterys in the plane felt a bit haevyer does this interfere with the flying performance in any way?
i got one for my birthday and i didnt know how to charge it but now i do and when i put the batterys in the plane felt a bit haevyer does this interfere with the flying performance in any way?
Well...you can try to assemble three AAA 2/3 NiMH Cells together and make a battery pack like I sis, or you can buy one online (remember, NiMH 3.6 V 2/3 AAA!). A single Li-Po battery 3.7V may also work, provided you have the means to recharge it correctly, and 4.8V NiMH battery packs work too (some Aero Jex come with those).
Here in Brazil, the same plane, but with diferent paint and name: Sky Challenger.
Good toy! ^^
If you want upgrade the old green 3,6V 300mAh Ni-MH battery pack, a single RCR123A Li-ion 3,6V 700mAh cell can increase the flight time to 10minutes (I had reach 17min).
These look cool, I always believed it would benefit from a LiPo cell. I am not so sure if this class of cells could deliver the required current for long periods without overheating though (I measured up to 3-3.5 A with full throttle under strain on my own plane).
The major flaw with 3.6 V designs is that larger currents == more heat losses. The 4.8V versions fare much better in this respect, and a conversion to 7.2V Lipo would be pretty much mandatory.
I had tested a 2S Li-Po (7,4V) on a old Thunder Hawk circuit (it's the same too), it don't blow up, but it don't work with high voltage, it only want to work at low voltage. I belive the maximum voltage is 5 volts, higher than that it cut-off.
these planes are pretty cool, but I guess they are made to work during 1 year.
I got 2 other different planes called Thunder Hawk. The same electronic, but different design, they are both with bad gear box.
Well, these are toy-grade. They really aren't made any better than those cheap RC cars that only have 1 forward and 1 backwards speed (and in fact, the RX and TX circuitry is often the same!). There are no ball bearings and no wear compensation, although you could lube them I guess.
My first Thunder Hawk was with some WD-40 oil in the gearbox and the main "output axis".
Not so useful for new planes, but increase ~1min flight time if you feel that the prop is "a bit hard to spin". The main axis should spin *very very freely* when you disassemble the plastic capsule.
Check it, bescause 3.3A is a bit high for this plane. My Thunder Hawk sucks 2.8~2.5A from the full charged Li-ion cell with full throttle when it was an active 9monthes old flying plane.
so overall would you say this plane flies well? i think im getting one, just would like a heads up on how it handles. i would try radioshack's starscream jet rc, its the same idea as this and works really well.
Well let's be honest...of course it doesn't fly as well as a cheap hobby-grade plane, there are days where it's impossible to get it in the air at all, and the quality of its components leaves something to be desired (especially the battery/motors). It's a good introduction to model plane flying though, and cheap enough to have no regrets trying it out.
The wheels were taken off, but only because they broken or fell off during flight :-D Not that you get a chance to land it regularly very often...and even with all 4 or just with 2 front wheels it's hard to take off by rolling, unless wheels are perfectly aligned and you have some 20 meters of runway to spare.
Well, it sure does fly somehow, but I was quite lucky on that day: if the wind is just above the limit or in any way irregular in direction, I just can't make it take off or keep it flying: it plummets almost as a lead weight if anything interferes with its airspeed. I was surprised that it flew as it did in the video, to be honest.
I would like to make a collection of all those cheap RC planes :-p The Aero Jex is pretty minimal (no control surfaces (steers by differential motor thrust), 40 MHz band...) but there are other similar 2-channel planes with better performance. Maybe I'll try a battery mod or something :-p
I want to go bigger too, but for now I'm stuck with this one...well at least as long as I can recover it from thorny bushes and other unfriendly places where it might end up :-)
True! I've trained with rc simulator for a while and it pays of alot. You can buy FMS for almost no cash at all. It ruff graphic but the idea with 4 chanel is the same you know. That's why I wanna go bigger now =)
Hmm I have FMS, but afaik it's freeware, so normally you shouldn't have to pay for it unless it comes with one of those simulation controllers e.g. those sold by Esky. Being a cheap yobbo, I am using a dual shock-type joypad (the two analog sticks feel a lot like a good quality remote's sticks)
I think they are selling these pretty much anywhere by now, they are classified as "toys" and perform as such. Nevertheless, they are good fun for the novice, before moving to something bigger.
I have the same plane on orange color.

mines getting old so the foam is beginning to become less bouncy. A bad crash smashed the nose off ::)
i noticed it doesn't fly well at all in the wind and now one of the motors goes faster than the other so it goes round and round in circles.
Anyhow - its still great new - especially for £30

The plastic gearbox is the first to die.
