i think skipping/jump rope mainly builds up your calf muscles for endurance and stuff, for all that time you're gonna spend on the balls of your feet, stepping in and out and such. That, among other things too I'd presume.
try to run at least 3times a week 1km, week after week you will notice it will get easier, than you run 2km, than 3km,.. but don't push it to far ! stop if you can't go anymore . good luck
