The sisters parents never ran the Orpheum or any other theatre. The father had a restaurant. He was Greek and the mother was Norweigian. Superhartline
These ladies had absolutely amazing voices,,,not merely voices, but they used them as actual instruments! Yeah, I wonder if these songs back then were recorded on magnetic tape or directly on to blank recording discs and remastered using modern electronics? The songs I've heard that I know were recorded onto disc didn't sound as good, and I don't think they could have been cleaned up all that much?
The Andrew Sisters learned to harmanize when their parents ran the Orpheum Theater in Minneapolis. There was live music in the theater, and the girls would hang out back stage listening to the music. The harmonization came from imitating the horn section.
Are you sure this is the Andrews Sisters? This sounds like this trio of sisters from New Orleans that do a lot of Andrews Sisters covers (they're great though)
@pigeonsgowoot Strangely, it sounds too much like the Andrews Sisters to be the Andrews Sisters. It sounds like an excellent impersonation of them. Of course, I could be wrong. I recall Bette Midler, years back, sued somebody for imitating her voice for a widely shown TV commercial- I foget the product- without permission. Bette claimed, "she sounds more like me than I do."
@defundthewar - you are referring to Midler vs. Ford Motor Co. (1988). Midler sued Ford Motor Company for using a an impersonator in a Ford tv commercial without her consent. Ford won the case, but she ended up winning on appeal and was awarded $400k ... go Bette!
Boogie woogie at it's best! THANKS for posting this delightful "blast from the past"! If the Andrews Sisters & the boys in the bad were any cooler, they'd have been frozen!!! :)

I love this kind of music!!! I really wish that there were such things as a time machine ... to be put smack dab in the middle of this music and culture!!!
I've adored the Andrews Sisters since I was a little boy! I think a lot of their appeal, to me, at least, is that they wore matching outfits and stepped in sync with each other, for the most part. There's just something about the dances they'd do!
@jacklayne The conservative tailored cut of the clothes and skirts showing just below the knee in the late 30s through the WWII era (rationing excessive use of fabric and material for the war effort) help to give "that step in sync look" you speak of to the choreography. They are really just swing, jitterbug, Lindy dance steps of the era. And remember, The Andrew Sisters were BIG in an era when you really had to be great to be good! When The Andrew Sisters did it, people noticed.
when you I would hear this music as a kid, I remember thinkine it was old fashioned, but when I listen now... wow, I can hear it, I get it now, this music was hot, people must have loved this when it was new
Great song! After hearing this, I was walking down the street singing the only words of the song I could remember -- beat me daddy. So there I am, in a quiet suburb singing "beat me daddy, beat me daddy, beat me daddy" over and over again. You should have seen the looks I got from the passersby.
@YouSirAreAnImposter It is also a later re-recording, probably from their years with Dot Records. Their original hits were done for Decca, but they rerecorded their big hits again during stints with Capital and Dot, and those later recordings are hi-fi and/or stereo.
There are only two left from this era now that The great Kathryn Grayson has just passed. .Patsy is 91. Deanne Durbin is 88.Not aware of any other mega female singers from this era still around.
Oh my, it is even worst then that. Britain's Vera Lynne,Country legend Kitty Wells, How could I forget Doris Day, Then there is Kitty Kallen, Kay Starr, Norma Zimmer, and Margaret Whiting. All are 85+ I got 2 of 10. I flunked the quiz big time. Next time I will not forget to take my prune juice and Geritol.

So many great people gone, yet cheer up! Your generation can become the best yet! You never know. Keep the faith. You can get two girl pals and have fun playing the Andrews Sisters . . . and any other greats you admire.
Actually, Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B was based off of this song, but became far more popular because of it's time of release and it's war-time related content.
@windgecko I saw Patty and Maxine in "OVER HERE" on B'way in the mid 70s, Of course, LaVerne had already passed away. Bette Midler's Divine Ms M (Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy) album was already out and when Patty and Maxine appeared on the stage of the Shubert Theatre dressed as Buck Private WACS, the audience, young and old, just went wild. decca got their tape recorder in mid 1949
so this must be recorded on a glass master
however I have a compilation album of billie holiday, and it sounds amazingly clear :)
but the tape recordings are in fact clearer
