  • Can you make a written list of parts please. I got confused on how big they should be. I know how long but how big. Thank you

  • Could this be bulit with 3/4" PVC? because i have 6 feet left from a diy fig rig that i don't really like

  • This is all good and well, but it won't fit my XL2

  • @RDWGstudios Make it bigger! PVC is cheap and easily modified.

  • this is sick. what if i was using a dslr though would it be different cause i cant really focus it?

  • Easy to build, and fast. I painted all the PVC flat black before assembly, so it looks much better. The rig works very well, but as with all camera platforms, practice makes perfect. I'm going to try his Frugal Floater next. Keep up the great work, Scott.

  • i wanna pimp out my rig D:

  • I JUST MADE MINE! THANKS MAN, FOR THE GREAT VIDEO!

  • yes i'm cheap but i am not stupid, no way in hell I'm paying $600 for a real one ill make my own!

  • @thefrugalfilmmaker I have a DSLR camera. Do you recommend me using the first camera rig or the second one?

  • you could put a plug into the bottom 3 ports, and bolt cart wheels to the bottom of them. now its a steady-cam and table dolly

  • @thefrugalfilmmaker i have the same camera, but i use a RODE NTG 1 shotgun microphone on top connected to a JuicedLink CX231 mixer. is there a way i could convert this stabilizer so that it would work with the equipment i am using now?

    Thanks!

  • Absolutely marvelous. Works like a dream.Thanks.

  • Great video! Thanks a bunch, we've been using this for a few months now for our videos and its worked great.

  • for the bottom 2 t joints could u use 90 degree angle joint instead ?

  • Excellent video, what did you use for the shockmount?

  • @joerosenbaum The shockmount is one from a previous episode. Click on it when it first appears to go to the video.

  • where did you buy the hand up wrips?

  • Is the hinged t-joint something you made yourself? I can't find any for the life of me. Hardware & plumbing stores have no idea what I'm talking about. Thanks!

  • I also follow the tutorial an it and it took about 30 minutes but I got it thanks a lot and this Animal Thug TV. And my next project will be the camera dolly

  • I followed this tutorial to make a rig for a D7000. Works awesome, thanks a lot!

  • @ChaosMarine7106 the measurements used here are also okay for any dslr? :)

  • Does this work with a DSLR, I have a Canon t3i.

  • @logandelisle Press the rear part against your body to stabilize a bit more. Or you can make an allowance for the shake by filming an extra second or two so you can delete the shake out of your footage in editing.

  • I built this but when I film and press the record button it gets really shaky and uncontrollable. What should I do to prevent this?

  • i wanna put that rubber gripping on my steadicam! (its the poor mans steadicam one)

  • Will the design and dimensions from this video work for a canon t2i/550d slr??

  • @xanthoproductions Just adjust the dimensions, should work.

  • I just built mine. Thanks so much. No more shaky footage and all camera controls accessible from the frame.

  • thank you i built this the day after i found it and it looks awesome

  • i dont understand y the screw has to be spring loaded

  • i want to know what the accessory coming in the near future is!!!!!!!!!

  • I live in holland and they dont sell that kind a pvc over here, what sucks! So anybody knows a website where i van buy them?

Plz send me a private message:) thank you

  • We just put this together today! It works AMAZING. Thank you so much!

  • Great little stabilizer! I use a modified version of this to not only stabilize shots, but to protect my GoPro from taking too much of a beating while snowboarding!

  • i don't know if you already made a tutorial, but can you make a tutorial on how to make a decent glidecam?

  • @DavyCronin I tried a Glidecam clone, but failed. I did succeed, however, in make a Steadicam Merlin clone. Check out my video "The Frugal Floater" for more info.

  • @thefrugalfilmmaker What camera model is on the rig @ 1:33,saludos.

  • @justohuitzil It's the Canon HF S100 and he uses and XLR box from. You can watch his "Episode Workflow" video where he shares all of this.

  • @usedtobeawkward Thanks a lot man,saludos.

  • @DavyCronin dude, check out my 'silver flyer' video using emt's from home depot. Guarantee you the results will surprise you.

  • what kind of camera is that ?

  • i love it !!! but i have a question about ur phantom powered unit under ur camcorder..where did u get it from and how much ?

  • Can you please message me or list the pieces used or recommended for this project? I am very interested in building one. Thanks!

  • hey I have a great idea! :D If thaat isnt stable enough for you. Just make the two back pieces longer- and you can set it on your shoulder :) What do you think? (I built it and can show you though I am sure you already know what I am talking about)

  • do you think this rig would work with copper pipe rather than pvc? or would it be too weighty?

  • @101MovieBuff that would work but considering you may be using it for hours on end filming the lighter the better

  • @101MovieBuff I have been experimenting with copper for a rig. I like the extra weight; haven't done this design. The supplies will cost a little more, and unless you use screws in critical places, it'll be difficult to break down for travel....

  • @thefrugalfilmmaker, i haven't researched much into different types of external mic. what are you using in this video?

  • Would it be possible to add a tripod base plate adapter on the rig?

  • How well do you think this will work with a DSLR. I have a D300s I use to film, and its about 7 pounds. how stable is that screw?

  • For everyones information, It's possible to fit 12 (2AA) battery into the tubing. Wrap each of them in a layer of electrical tape so no contact can be done between each batteries, it fits nice and tight into the 1/2 pvc pipes and it adds a good weight to the rig !! Helps a lot when using a GoPro for example

  • Dear Frugal Filmmaker, love love your stuff! very helpful practical applicable and yeah even inspiring! THNX!

  • Does it have to be a certain spring?

  • niceeeee love it i ll build it myself too im from mexico good job!! would you make it smaller if you were using it for a gopro?

  • @rogerbaidon I built one with all 4 inch pipes for my go pro and its perfect

  • wow, i built this and it is amazing

  • Any reason you chose to use T joints at the bottom sides and not elbow joints?

  • Wow effin great, ty so much sir

  • AMIGO DTB SOY DE MEXICO LA VERDAD NOSE HABLAR INGLES PERO MUXAS GRAXIAS POR COMPARTIR TODOS TUS CONOCIMIENTOS,NO HE TERMINADO DE VER TODOS TUS TUTORIALES PERO LO HARE GRAXIASSSS

  • Hey i love this rig But i noticed the 1/4th inch screw that i used was not threaded as far apart as a tripod screw is and the inside of my camera is stripped a bit, how can i fix that also i recently bought a rode shot gun mic with a hot shoe shock mount how can i make a mic mount for the rig thanks :)

  • Does anyone who has built this rig in the UK know where to get the plug that the screw pops through? I'm in the UK and I cant find this anywhere!! smallest I can find is 32mm.

    Urgent help needed!!

  • Sorry for the previous post...i meant to say that you are the man...i bulit this rig and i've just used it on an independent film...it's awsome

  • You tha maan! I built this rig an d

  • would i be able to make the spring loaded camera mount with a end cap and not a plug? our hardware store dosnt have any plugs, just caps that go over pvc

  • Hey Scott,

How did you get the bicycle grips on? Mine only go on about an inch and they get stuck. Did you lube the PVC first?

  • @thefrugalfilmmaker

I was wondering if you ever cement your PVC rigs together. I was making a short film with some friends once and i was using a PVC fig rig i made but i didn't cement it together. i was using a friends T2i and we were filming in a wet area. half way through filming i took the neck strap off for 5 seconds and sure enough, the whole rig fell apart and the t2i was ruined. luckily he had a protection plan and got a new one free, i just don't want my mistake to happen to anyone else

  • Brilliant...stuff!

  • how so cheap , In the uk i go to my local diy store this costs around £30

  • @oBri550o PVC is super cheap in the States.

  • @thefrugalfilmmaker Thanks for all your videos! I've built my own gear based on your designs including this stabilizer which I've posted on my channel (PVC is the best)

  • @thefrugalfilmmaker no its just insanely expensive in the UK cause everything is a ripoff

  • nice work just made it 4 my self thanks

  • @oBri550o i know its soo expensive in the UK!

  • @oBri550o Could you find the plug that the screw pops through? I'm in the UK too and I cant find this anywhere!! smallest I ca find is 32mm.

Anyone know where to get one?

  • @mattylewisbennett No i could not find that piece ,I used a large washer to blank the end off .

  • @oBri550o I've solved the problem :) I used a Coca-Cola Bottle top. PERFECT FIT! :)

  • @oBri550o Wickes is really cheap I hear.

  • @oBri550o What store was it?

  • @usedtobeawkward Hi wickes and B&Q

  • @oBri550o Thanks. I've been searching around Homebase unsuccessfully, and was tempted to try Wickes but didn't. Ooops... I'll try soon. Thanks agian! :)

  • could you put a ''T'' joint on the back instead of a ''Elbow'' joint then use say a 4 inch headless bolt (thread) and put wheels on the back and customize the front to but wheels on so you can use it as a dolly as well???? If you can could you please put a video up on how to do that. It doesnt have to be the way i said just so you could possiably use it as a dolly???

  • good rig. i justbuilt it for my 7d. i actually had to use a 2 1/2in screw and if your going to build this use pvc glue. dont risk the pvc falling apart. its 5$

  • As my camera tripod got caught by the wind while I was setting up a fireworks display for New Years Eve 2011, I'll be using this idea and modify it a bit so I'll have a rigid platform for my digital camera.

Seeing my €800 camera face down on the ground gave me quite a scare. Fortunately it's still working, but I'd rather not experience that ordeal again!

  • Great video. Thanks for being so specific. Will that pvc stabilizer work for dslr camera like the 5D? It seems I would need to modify the 6 inch pieces to possibly 8 inch?

  • Hey I can't find the plug at my Home Depo, all the have is one with a hollow top. HELP FOR ALTERNATIVES!!

  • overkill for hx9v?

  • sweet! just made one for myself for my dslr and waiting for it to dry

  • this is really cool! thanks! Does the stearing wheel one make it dificult to adjust the camera too?

  • Thank you very much Mr. Frugal for the great and helpful vids!! I've just discovered your channel about a week ago and have already built the camera stablizer. Next, my friends and I plan to construct the jib based off your vid.

  • Fascinante, genial, a ver si hay un método para crear un follow fucus artesanal saludos desde Venezuela

  • amazing video, helped me so much while filming, it was popular with my buddies so i made them ones as well!

  • This is awesome! Just built mine yesterday and parts costed me about six bucks. I am using it with the Sony WX9 and it is perfect. At first I thought it would be too big but it is actually very comfortable. NThx for the vid and now just have to dress it up.

  • i made this myself :)

  • She pea Mo Fo Bro...what a great item and even better presentation. !00% all the way around. Well done...Happy Holidays Rock on or we'll hurt 'cha bad...lol. Thanks Frugal

  • SUPER SEXY VIDEO, helped me alot i was stresing about how im gonna make a first person shooter movie with our camera, im about to head out and make it, wish me luck and check out my past movies were making a new one thats better. BUT THANKS A THOUSAND!

  • thanks sir for this video. i made 2 within an hour. though i injured my leg trying to drill a hole. so please be careful anyone else who is attempting to drill holes. i purchased 1/2" and 3/4" pipes and assembled them happily. sadly that shop did have any spring to support so i push the screw upwards and turn my GH1 so that it flushes to the T joint. for the 1/2" its still loose when my GH1 is not on it. but for 3/4" i managed to put in a wing nut to secure it in place. :) thanks sir!

  • Are you related to Judge Reinhold ? :0

  • would this work on a panasonic gh1? measurements wise?

  • Thank you so much i was trying to build it by miself but it didn know how until now AGAIN THANKS!

  • made it with 3 dollars...and pipe, connecters, nuts, and a bolt

  • Nice video, thank you! Guess to build that rig.

Just one question - what is on the bottom of your camera (box like mixer with mic inputs and outputs)?

  • Nice watch you are wearing? What is it?

  • Thanks a billion, making a trip to the store this weekend and making my own :D

  • Beautiful thank's

  • Thanks for posting the design! I made a few adjustments to fit my camera. I shoot on a Canon HF S20 and my LCD screen is a bit longer than the camera used in your video. I made the rig by your design but I think I will replace the 6" sections with 7" pieces so I have the ability to tilt the screen when necessary. I also replaced the back elbow joint with a T- joint to level the rig so I could use it as a table tripod in a pinch. I'll also be adding rubber feet. Thanks again for the idea!

  • Hi Scott, thanks for the video! I made my stabilizer yesterday and your plans worked perfectly with my D7000. Just wondering how long the inserts are for adding a cross joint on the top bar for accessories?

    Thanks.

  • it wil also protect you camara if its fall

  • can i make the handle 8 inches

  • That's what I want to know as well; can I make the handle 8 inches? Please let us know.

  • Is there a way to combine this rig with the frugal floater? It would also be cool to be able to attach a shoulder mount if so desired.. hmm.. ideas are coming to mind!

  • Thanks for the video, cant wait to build this for my Sony NEX 3.

  • im getting the parts to make it tomorrw thanks for the good ideas

  • I adapted two shoes that is on track to flash and it was good glued to durepox

  • What is the "shock mount" for? You showed it as and "accessory" but gave no explanation about it. Thanks..

  • The only thing I changed from this design was I got rid of the back, it was in the way of my LCD on the Canon t2i. I put the spring loaded mount on the front T-shape, so it's basically a rectangle and works great.

  • can you explain why spring loaded is better

  • i'm looking for something heavy that I could fit in the tubing so it makes the rig more stable ( I use it with a GoPro and it's so light and unstable ( I use it to film skateboard and I follow the guys)) Any ideas of what could fix this?

  • @BoardHEROs Some people have suggested sand for the PVC light stands to make them more stable (an idea I don't endorse), which might work here. You might also might try building the rig out of steel pipe and fittings to get the desired effect. Another idea might be to attach a plate (the kind you put on weight lifting bars) between the camera and the mount for the added weight.

  • @thefrugalfilmmaker Thank you very much for the reply ! I will first try with sand first and if it fail I'm sure gonna go with the steel pipes !! You doesn't seem to like the idea ?..

  • @thefrugalfilmmaker but wouldnt the sand get in the spring and screw it up

  • @BoardHEROs : I put together a rig for my GoPro check it out at youtube.com/watch?v=S3PsLV9RlF0

  • @BoardHEROs I use the handlebar mount and a polycarb tube.

  • @BoardHEROs Could use spent batteries wrapped (well) in electrical tape. That should weigh you down a little, just make sure they don't short out inside. You could add a little non expanding foam to make sure they won't rattle inside.

  • @BoardHEROs

Lead shotgun shot would be effective. Pack it in tight, or combine it with sand so that it doesn't rattle.

  • great job.

  • Do you have a hard copy of a parts list? I think we have the same cameras, I have a Canon HX-31 and love it! Keep posting new DIY videos, you do a great job!

  • Hey, love the rig, i was just wondering if i could put a Nikon D7000 on it and it would work? much appreciated

  • @aboyandhisnikon It should. Lots of people have been using this design with a DSLR.

  • What is the length of the tubes?

  • What kind of camera are you using?

  • ok, so I was wondering how to make this more stable for brisk walking and running videos. I posted a video of myself running with and without the rig and it looks like the results are just about the same. who knows, I might be missing something. anyway, I was wondering if adding weights would improve stability, kinda like the DIY home steadycam by Hoopajoo. Any thoughts how to improve this design?

  • The 3 dislikes must have come from the people who make professional stabilizers

  • A que se refiere cuando dice que "ventana" en vez de la pieza de espalda, saludos.!

  • does a nikon 5100 fit on this?

  • I can't seem to find the plug! I've made the rig without it, but I'm realising the importance of that plug offering stabilisation for the camera (Particularly as my screw is a thread too long - will need to cut that)

  • @Oldvinyl lol, i had that problem too last time, here's what you need, A BOTTLE CAP, it works the same.

if the cap's diameter is bigger than your pipe, put on few layers of duct tape around the pipe. that should do the trick. mine just happened to be the right size. it fit snugly inside the pvc pipe.

  • I put a t joint on the top back L joint and Lade a detachable shoulder support with the l joint and pipe so now I also have a shoulder support. This was a great idea, except I almost made a 1/4" hole in my hand with the drill press trying to hold the small end cap.

  • thanks for the instructions. i was able to make one, but i'm wondering what the spring is for? it doesn't make the camera float anyway because your camera is going to swivel if it wasn't resting snugly. maybe it's there so you can turn the screw?

  • @jonmanilenio The spring just holds the screw in place so you can turn it into the camera thread with ease.

  • now you need people who can really act.

  • Awesome piece of gear! Any ideas for those of us with fixed LCD DSLRs like the T2i?

  • @OneAndSame You could create PVC "window" instead of the vertical back piece, so you could see the screen. You could also attach an external monitor to the top of the rig to help with this.

  • I just posted a video response of a little video I made with the camera rig at our local skateboard park

  • thank you for this! It was SUPER SIMPLE!! WORKS LIKE A CHARM

  • I am off to Home Depot to get the parts!

  • You are a genius. Thank you so much!

  • You look a bit like obama.. in a good way XD thanks so much!

  • I'm confused do I have to drill a hole in my camera or what

  • Just got done buliding mine, works great! thanks Frugal Filmmaker!

  • I just got done making this. WOOOOOOOOO! And for anybody who is wondering it does indeed work with DSLR's

  • For spring I used hanging wire (for pictures). I cut off an 8 inch piece, twirled it around the bolt, removed it from the bolt and stretched it a bit so that it wasn't so tight. And it worked. Also, there is no mention of the PVC elbow being SLIP only. I bought SLIP AND THREAD and had to go back to the store. Thanks Frugal, love your channel!

  • Great Video. I just made this 1 hour ago and it works great, but it cost me $32.

  • Hey,

    Really helpful video, thanks man:)

What lens do you use for your camera?

    Thanks

  • thats cool because i make just about everything from pvc lol good job

  • wow.. you should have patented that and put it on dragons den XD just saying

  • By the way, if anyone can't find a right sized spring, cut off a section of your 1 subject spiral notebook. Worked for me

  • @AQColors Awesome tip! Thanks for sharing!

  • love the enthusiasm

  • Hello, what about normal "multi" glue for wood, ceramic, plastic, rubber and so on. That should go as well, right?

  • thats cool but you gotta spray paint it black. the PVC looks kinda cheap.

  • people if u make this dont do what i did dont paint it a color cuz then the pvc pipe is gonna be hard to work with

  • WTF is a hinge t joint?

ALL of my local home depots and true values have no clue what it is.

  • This is such a simple yet efficient design! Thank you very much!:D

  • I have a question: How do you keep the camera stable when you screw it on the bolt? When I do it, it doesn't get quite tight enough and the cam swivels.

I did everything to a 'T" in the video, between sizes of materials and assembly.

  • @PAM1976 Other people have encountered this as well. I didn't because the mount on my XLR box was so deep, but standard camera threads are too shallow. So, you can trim the screw with a hacksaw or rotary tool OR add a nut just under the head of the screw to shorten the end that protrudes from the PVC plug. You'll also need to add another T-joint to the back rear, replacing the elbow joint. This way, the now longer screw on the bottom is prevented from teetering the whole rig when set down.

  • QUESTION! How big is the flashlight & pvc holding the light? Or did you cut the pvc to make the flashlight fit?

  • hahahaha 3:45... "your gonna want to drop one of your nuts on t
