how did you get the camera to not spin while on the screw? i tried to screw my camera in tighter but the screw itself is spinning, not the camera. any tips/fixes?
Easy to build, and fast. I painted all the PVC flat black before assembly, so it looks much better. The rig works very well, but as with all camera platforms, practice makes perfect. I'm going to try his Frugal Floater next. Keep up the great work, Scott.
@thefrugalfilmmaker i have the same camera, but i use a RODE NTG 1 shotgun microphone on top connected to a JuicedLink CX231 mixer. is there a way i could convert this stabilizer so that it would work with the equipment i am using now?
Is the hinged t-joint something you made yourself? I can't find any for the life of me. Hardware & plumbing stores have no idea what I'm talking about. Thanks!
I also follow the tutorial an it and it took about 30 minutes but I got it thanks a lot and this Animal Thug TV. And my next project will be the camera dolly
@logandelisle Press the rear part against your body to stabilize a bit more. Or you can make an allowance for the shake by filming an extra second or two so you can delete the shake out of your footage in editing.

Hey i love this rig But i noticed the 1/4th inch screw that i used was not threaded as far apart as a tripod screw is and the inside of my camera is stripped a bit, how can i fix that also i recently bought a rode shot gun mic with a hot shoe shock mount how can i make a mic mount for the rig thanks :)
Does anyone who has built this rig in the UK know where to get the plug that the screw pops through? I'm in the UK and I cant find this anywhere!! smallest I can find is 32mm.
would i be able to make the spring loaded camera mount with a end cap and not a plug? our hardware store dosnt have any plugs, just caps that go over pvc
I was wondering if you ever cement your PVC rigs together. I was making a short film with some friends once and i was using a PVC fig rig i made but i didn't cement it together. i was using a friends T2i and we were filming in a wet area. half way through filming i took the neck strap off for 5 seconds and sure enough, the whole rig fell apart and the t2i was ruined. luckily he had a protection plan and got a new one free, i just don't want my mistake to happen to anyone else
@thefrugalfilmmaker Thanks for all your videos! I've built my own gear based on your designs including this stabilizer which I've posted on my channel (PVC is the best)
@oBri550o Thanks. I've been searching around Homebase unsuccessfully, and was tempted to try Wickes but didn't. Ooops... I'll try soon. Thanks agian! :)

I use a HD pocket cam for my video. Should I use, or is it even possible to use, a stabilizer for this. If so, can you build one that works for such a small cam and show it to us?
Thanks for posting the design! I made a few adjustments to fit my camera. I shoot on a Canon HF S20 and my LCD screen is a bit longer than the camera used in your video. I made the rig by your design but I think I will replace the 6" sections with 7" pieces so I have the ability to tilt the screen when necessary. I also replaced the back elbow joint with a T- joint to level the rig so I could use it as a table tripod in a pinch. I'll also be adding rubber feet. Thanks again for the idea!
Hi Scott, thanks for the video! I made my stabilizer yesterday and your plans worked perfectly with my D7000. Just wondering how long the inserts are for adding a cross joint on the top bar for accessories?
Is there a way to combine this rig with the frugal floater? It would also be cool to be able to attach a shoulder mount if so desired.. hmm.. ideas are coming to mind!
The only thing I changed from this design was I got rid of the back, it was in the way of my LCD on the Canon t2i. I put the spring loaded mount on the front T-shape, so it's basically a rectangle and works great.
i'm looking for something heavy that I could fit in the tubing so it makes the rig more stable ( I use it with a GoPro and it's so light and unstable ( I use it to film skateboard and I follow the guys)) Any ideas of what could fix this?
@BoardHEROs Some people have suggested sand for the PVC light stands to make them more stable (an idea I don't endorse), which might work here. You might also might try building the rig out of steel pipe and fittings to get the desired effect. Another idea might be to attach a plate (the kind you put on weight lifting bars) between the camera and the mount for the added weight.
@thefrugalfilmmaker Thank you very much for the reply ! I will first try with sand first and if it fail I'm sure gonna go with the steel pipes !! You doesn't seem to like the idea ?..
@BoardHEROs Could use spent batteries wrapped (well) in electrical tape. That should weigh you down a little, just make sure they don't short out inside. You could add a little non expanding foam to make sure they won't rattle inside.
Do you have a hard copy of a parts list? I think we have the same cameras, I have a Canon HX-31 and love it! Keep posting new DIY videos, you do a great job!
ok, so I was wondering how to make this more stable for brisk walking and running videos. I posted a video of myself running with and without the rig and it looks like the results are just about the same. who knows, I might be missing something. anyway, I was wondering if adding weights would improve stability, kinda like the DIY home steadycam by Hoopajoo. Any thoughts how to improve this design?
I can't seem to find the plug! I've made the rig without it, but I'm realising the importance of that plug offering stabilisation for the camera (Particularly as my screw is a thread too long - will need to cut that)
@Oldvinyl lol, i had that problem too last time, here's what you need, A BOTTLE CAP, it works the same.
if the cap's diameter is bigger than your pipe, put on few layers of duct tape around the pipe. that should do the trick. mine just happened to be the right size. it fit snugly inside the pvc pipe.
I put a t joint on the top back L joint and Lade a detachable shoulder support with the l joint and pipe so now I also have a shoulder support. This was a great idea, except I almost made a 1/4" hole in my hand with the drill press trying to hold the small end cap.
thanks for the instructions. i was able to make one, but i'm wondering what the spring is for? it doesn't make the camera float anyway because your camera is going to swivel if it wasn't resting snugly. maybe it's there so you can turn the screw?
@OneAndSame You could create PVC "window" instead of the vertical back piece, so you could see the screen. You could also attach an external monitor to the top of the rig to help with this.
For spring I used hanging wire (for pictures). I cut off an 8 inch piece, twirled it around the bolt, removed it from the bolt and stretched it a bit so that it wasn't so tight. And it worked. Also, there is no mention of the PVC elbow being SLIP only. I bought SLIP AND THREAD and had to go back to the store. Thanks Frugal, love your channel!
I have a question: How do you keep the camera stable when you screw it on the bolt? When I do it, it doesn't get quite tight enough and the cam swivels.
I did everything to a 'T" in the video, between sizes of materials and assembly.
@PAM1976 Other people have encountered this as well. I didn't because the mount on my XLR box was so deep, but standard camera threads are too shallow. So, you can trim the screw with a hacksaw or rotary tool OR add a nut just under the head of the screw to shorten the end that protrudes from the PVC plug. You'll also need to add another T-joint to the back rear, replacing the elbow joint. This way, the now longer screw on the bottom is prevented from teetering the whole rig when set down.

chicagotom2006 3 months ago
The only thing I changed from this design was I got rid of the back, it was in the way of my LCD on the Canon t2i. I put the spring loaded mount on the front T-shape, so it's basically a rectangle and works great.
nicklepa24 3 months ago
can you explain why spring loaded is better

i'm looking for something heavy that I could fit in the tubing so it makes the rig more stable ( I use it with a GoPro and it's so light and unstable ( I use it to film skateboard and I follow the guys)) Any ideas of what could fix this?
BoardHEROs 3 months ago
@BoardHEROs Some people have suggested sand for the PVC light stands to make them more stable (an idea I don't endorse), which might work here. You might also might try building the rig out of steel pipe and fittings to get the desired effect. Another idea might be to attach a plate (the kind you put on weight lifting bars) between the camera and the mount for the added weight.
thefrugalfilmmaker 3 months ago
@thefrugalfilmmaker Thank you very much for the reply ! I will first try with sand first and if it fail I'm sure gonna go with the steel pipes !! You doesn't seem to like the idea ?..
BoardHEROs 3 months ago
@thefrugalfilmmaker but wouldnt the sand get in the spring and screw it up

@BoardHEROs : I put together a rig for my GoPro check it out at youtube.com/watch?v=S3PsLV9RlF0

@BoardHEROs I use the handlebar mount and a polycarb tube.
refjazzy 3 months ago
@BoardHEROs Could use spent batteries wrapped (well) in electrical tape. That should weigh you down a little, just make sure they don't short out inside. You could add a little non expanding foam to make sure they won't rattle inside.

@BoardHEROs
Lead shotgun shot would be effective. Pack it in tight, or combine it with sand so that it doesn't rattle.

Do you have a hard copy of a parts list? I think we have the same cameras, I have a Canon HX-31 and love it! Keep posting new DIY videos, you do a great job!

Hey, love the rig, i was just wondering if i could put a Nikon D7000 on it and it would work? much appreciated

@aboyandhisnikon It should. Lots of people have been using this design with a DSLR.

What kind of camera are you using?
dstruxness 4 months ago
ok, so I was wondering how to make this more stable for brisk walking and running videos. I posted a video of myself running with and without the rig and it looks like the results are just about the same. who knows, I might be missing something. anyway, I was wondering if adding weights would improve stability, kinda like the DIY home steadycam by Hoopajoo. Any thoughts how to improve this design?

The 3 dislikes must have come from the people who make professional stabilizers

does a nikon 5100 fit on this?
MrFabbeh 4 months ago
I can't seem to find the plug! I've made the rig without it, but I'm realising the importance of that plug offering stabilisation for the camera (Particularly as my screw is a thread too long - will need to cut that)
Oldvinyl 4 months ago
@Oldvinyl lol, i had that problem too last time, here's what you need, A BOTTLE CAP, it works the same.
if the cap's diameter is bigger than your pipe, put on few layers of duct tape around the pipe. that should do the trick. mine just happened to be the right size. it fit snugly inside the pvc pipe.
AwkwardImagination 4 months ago
I put a t joint on the top back L joint and Lade a detachable shoulder support with the l joint and pipe so now I also have a shoulder support. This was a great idea, except I almost made a 1/4" hole in my hand with the drill press trying to hold the small end cap.
thetheflyinghawaiian 4 months ago
thanks for the instructions. i was able to make one, but i'm wondering what the spring is for? it doesn't make the camera float anyway because your camera is going to swivel if it wasn't resting snugly. maybe it's there so you can turn the screw?
jonmanilenio 4 months ago
@jonmanilenio The spring just holds the screw in place so you can turn it into the camera thread with ease.

now you need people who can really act.

Awesome piece of gear! Any ideas for those of us with fixed LCD DSLRs like the T2i?
OneAndSame 4 months ago

PAM1976 5 months ago
@PAM1976 Other people have encountered this as well. I didn't because the mount on my XLR box was so deep, but standard camera threads are too shallow. So, you can trim the screw with a hacksaw or rotary tool OR add a nut just under the head of the screw to shorten the end that protrudes from the PVC plug. You'll also need to add another T-joint to the back rear, replacing the elbow joint. This way, the now longer screw on the bottom is prevented from teetering the whole rig when set down.

QUESTION! How big is the flashlight & pvc holding the light? Or did you cut the pvc to make the flashlight fit?
