@tattoogeorge So i gather then that you could not dance then fella !
Maybe you should have tried eh ? It wasnt that hard to pick up and very enjoyable once you got the hang of it. And we are not gay ballet dancers either mr tattoo !
There's a picture of a girl dancing with a full cirlce skirt spinning in this video. Does anyone know what year the picture was taken because I think it was me!
I grew up in the North but was too young to experience it (Wigan), but I heard older kids rave on about it all the time. And then when I was old enough to go it was gone! So my scene was the 80s music. Everyone has their scene I suppose. But I remember kids in the local nightclubs outside of Wigan dancing in this style and it was, I must say, rather a flamboyant and almost exotic sight in a wet dreary grey-sky and supremely grimy Northern town.
Loved the Casino at the time, for me it was 78 to the close. I cringe at some of the dancing, and it does look like a gay knees up at times. There were some great dancers but some rigid shit shufflers too! Filming didnt do it justice. The music is still class and hey some people were sadly listening to the glitter band, Punk later and wearing platforms around the time. We were at least a cool minority and i for one was glad to be there . I now keep the fat!!! Its easier than keeping faith
used to dance with vernon, he wasn't as good as me, i used to lie on the stage and let him take the credit, but credit due he won the dancing comp. I never entered so he was lucky, maybe the next life
wigan was great but i split myself between there and cleggy, preferred cleggy but reckon wigan was the heart, live in frankfurt now and still go to events here, ktf
Borrowed Soul Boy (I know!) got me nostalgic. Went to Casino most Sats between '74 - '76 and this track amongst favourites and played a lot in early days. Amazingly 2.04 into the piece I spotted picture of a guy, folded arms and stockier than the others; mate of mine at the time from Rammy, great lad who I went up with on a regular basis. Look back with mixed feelings; great times and, those that were truly within the scene will know, very bad times as well! Glad I was there though. KTF

lmaoooo this is the funniest thing ive ever seen in my life ha ha ha. ive saved it to my favourites its really funny. but one things for sure, even tho none of them can dance they all enjoyed themselves thats the main thing lol
@dubindaygo song 1.The Vel-vets - I've Gotta Find Me Somebody - 20th Century records. If you want it on vinyl its been re-issued in the last few years or so on Beach Wood, or, you should be able to get a Pye "Disco Demand" UK,copy offa ebay etc. 2.N.F. Porter - Keep On Keepin' On - Lizard, also 2nd issued and booted on this label.
3. Donn Thomas - Come On Train - NUVJ, and booted/re-isued on NUVJ and V-J.
just a thought, but why is somebody looking at a vid of wigan when they don't know who the vel-vets are. and yeah the casino was a dump but it was OUR dump! yeah little england or whatever it was sort of ruined it,but it was still great for a young lad back then.everyone goes on about how great the mecca was, but come on there was some right shite played there as well, some of it nothing short of new york disco. if fact didn't the scene split then and the jazz funk thing was formed.
Wigan Casino was a dump (then again for those who actually went they will know that) Mr M's was a far better venue in the other room of the Casino club but like Geofflovett said in an earlier post The Torch was by far the best and was doing it way before with acts such as Major Lance performing there. If all those who claimed to have gone to Wigan Casino actually went, the place would needed to have been 10 times the size that it was.
Long before Wigan Casino ever opened(it was a bingo hall),Us real soul men went to the Wheel in Manchester, and the Iron door in Liverpool, the Mardi and the vic in Liverpool.
Keep the faith, but for fucks sake dont say it all started at Wigan Casino.

You had to be there to realise what a fantastic atmosphere it was.The casino inside was a right dump really, but we did'nt care about that. it was home. Home to the best music ever to be put out on record.ktf.
never made it to the casino unfortunately, i was a mod in the early sixties and went to the alnighters in the west end, the scene, the last chance saloon, flamingo, this was where it all started, they played gene chandler, maxine brown and all the early motown and atlantic stuff, northern soul dancing as good as it is, mainly variations on the mod dances like the boogaloo and the skate, brilliant stuff, and hey! how sweet it is ha ha
thats true it had to be made of wood the dance floor so it was shining polished real nice and lots of powder on it to take all the swet away and make it slipery like the ice skat ring, as most did come from the ice rings they use to play a lot good music there too.
Just since one of our Oldham crew dancing in this. The small chick with White top ! That was really nice. I ONLY EVER WENT TO THE CASINO ONCE, ON THE THIRD ANNIVERSARY WE CAME UP FROM CORNWALL THERE WAS AN OLD LADY I THINK SHE WAS CALLED Mrs WOODS? SHE COULDN'T UNDERSTAND OUR CORNISH ACCENTS !!I CAN STILL REMEMBER THE DISTINCTIVE "AROMA"OF JOHNSONS BABY POWDER AND BRUT MIXED WITH SMOKE AND SWEAT AS FOR THE TOILETS!
I STILL HAVE MY 40''SOUL BAGS AND SHOES THAT I WORE THAT NIGHT/MORNING THE AMAZING THING IS THEY STILL FIT I AM HEADING FOR THE BIG 50 NOW BUT MY LOVE FOR THIS SCENE HAS NEVER GONE AWAY
This takes me back..... at 2.13, top left of shot I am dancing in red waist coat! This was before mobile phones, and we travelled from south coast not knowing the cameras would be there.
Wow! I want to join you guys right now! Where are you? I only made it to Wigan Casino once but we used to dance to this stuff at our Youth Club. I love it. I love the fact that it's obscure sounds that never made it in the US. Fabulous stuff. Keep on keepin on!!
n.f.porter ~ keep on keeping on ! Fiona babes ~ I was there from the 2nd niter at Casino. Your heart is in the right place ~ loved yer track choices specially don thomas (was 1st in Pboro with it :) but you really shudda left the fat bald lads out of the vid! Gives the rest of us a bad name! :D
Great stuff i am at 32 sec in the black and white picture above to the right of the circle skirt girl i had a v neck short T shirt on. pic actual taken on a newies saturday night,The lad at 10 secs spinning was Billy from Edinburgh.

Our Youth Club had a fab DJ called Pete Joul who was into all this stuff and Trojan, Mowtown etc.

Wow! I want to join you guys right now! Where are you? I only made it to Wigan Casino once but we used to dance to this stuff at our Youth Club. I love it. I love the fact that it's obscure sounds that never made it in the US. Fabulous stuff. Keep on keepin on!!
