Someone invent a variable thrust tail booster for if the tail rotor fails. Just hit a big red button and let a directional giro control the thrust while making a quick landing. Another mad idea of mine no doubt.
I fly helis and I doubt if this happened to me I'd have any idea what was where when spinning like that - so either very lucky or very skilled that he landed in the open area
You could see that the whole helicopter is amazingly intact just the second it hit the ground so it held together but the next second one rotorblade cut trough a huge part of the front and probably decapitate the pilot.
I'd bet turbine failure, which was probably explosive and severed the tail rotor driveshaft. Within seconds the turbine experienced overspeed and disintegration, followed by impact. That's what the visible signs indicate to me. That's my wager.
Looks like he's dumping the fuel moments before the crash (clouds of smoke) If that smoke is fuel being dumped that would explain why the heli did not catch fire on impact.
@kennysandhoj He shutdown the engines. In a loss of tail rotor thrust emergency, you shutoff the engine(s) to stop or slow the rotation of the aircraft due to torque effect. That was more than likely the puff of smoke in the video. You also saw that the aircraft slowed it's rotation at that point.
Modern helicopters have breakaway fuel lines that are designed to stop the spillage of fuel and reduce the possibility of post crash fires in case something like this happens.
@dtiydr It will work if tail rotor (T/R) thrust is gone. The reason he dropped so fast is because he was already at a low airspeed and in a near vertical descent. Had he been lower and at that airspeed, it wouldn't have been so bad but T/R's can seize anytime at any altitude. Sometimes, without warning. Ideally, we would enter an auto when we have good airflow over the vertical stabilizer to help keep the nose pointed straight ahead and to get the best glide distance and lowest rate of descent.
I'll dumb down the technical terms here, the device that goes round and round stopped abruptly forcing the helicopter body to assume the role of round and round. Between the dizzy spells and the vomit I am surprised the operator could see at all to find that grassy patch.
@deadmanprodinc I'm a pilot & understand helicopters, why the tail rotor loss causes what we see here, BUT I'm not sure of one thing, is it possible to have any amount of directional control after tail rotor loss? People are saying "great he went to the grassy patch," but I'm saying he just happened to be over that patch.
@ProChoiceJesus I agree with you. I am not a helo pilot but understand their operation real well. Loss of tail rotor pretty much makes you a top spinning in the air. He just happened to be over that soft spot when it went down. Now if he had a lot more forward momentum I could see a possible auto rotation but in a hover your at the mercy of physics and good ole gravity.
@ProChoiceJesus I think you're right... (not that I'm an expert ) once the tail rotor is lost there's nothing you can do to save it, apart from get it on the ground asap. if the engine fails it can auto-rotate down, the grass was pure luck I recon and no lesser an impact than with tarmac I like those choppers with a turbine blast at the back instead of the tail rotor, but if you loose the engine maybe the same would happen? ... my head hurts now lol !

Wow that was some masterful piloting. I kept expecting to see it smash into a house or the freeway but he somehow managed to hit that tiny strip of grass.
@Erictheirritated It is possible to land a chopper without a tail rotor. depending on your airspeed at the time of the failure you can fly around all day without a tail rotor. Have you ever wondered what the vertical fin is for?
@mcharles64 The Vertical fin aids in turbulance. The horizontal stabilator helps keeps the bird stable in forward flight. But as far as landing without the tailrotor in op, there's little hope. This pilot did a marvelous job in preventing further deaths, but without the counter torch produced by the tail rotor he couldn't do much unfortunately. Physics win over. Notice how the helicopter significantely began to spin slower and less right before impact? Indicating a full down collective. RIP bro!

Thats what happends when you loose your tail rotor and not enough height to drop he stick and make a power off landing. The poor pilot had no choice where he landed in that situation your just going down and very fast and hard.
Given the height that control was lost on video (around 500ft?) and the virtually vertical descent, with little horizontal movement in any direction, it seems to me that the pilot had no control of where he was going and that it was very fortunate that there was open ground below rather than he was aiming for it.
We could ponder that he positioned himself over the area whilst he had control.
Unfortunately the pilot didn't do so well. Investigation has shown that the pilot spent more time than he should, trying to take the heli to the airport instead landing as soon as possible.
@TommyCaff I think that where he crashed is more a matter of luck than pilot control. There is little that the pilot can do once he's lost the tail rotor.
The Pilot died in this crash, but the cameraman survived. This was a new's helicopter filming traffic or something. They had a problem with the tail rotor, the pedals didnt seem to work, noone knows what happen'd specificlly but the pilot never tried to do the "running landing" and a lil flare at the end, maybe an autorotation. The real truth is that he saw an open field (where horses run) and decided to try and land there, unfortunantley the cyclic enterd the piulots jaw and into the brain.

No they didnt survive,it was one camera men and a pilot. It was all over the news in brazil since sao paolo has so many business man now using air taxi.
i watched that crash on live, that was the news helicopter of the Record News, the crash image was recorded by the news helicopter of Rede Globo, while it was returning to the studio, the place where the Record news helicopter fell is the country club of São Paulo.
Normally when you loose your tail rotor, you might be entering immediatly in autorotation to avoid this. Good pilot ? I'm not really sure of that... On panic, well, absolutly !
However, go out and ask 100 completely random people where you live where Sao Paolo is and I bet 10% at most know it's in Brazil. A lot of them have probably never heard of this city, which happens to have 11 million inhabitants.
Although people everywhere in general hardly excel when it comes geography you Americans really know next to nothing when it comes to where to find other countries on a map. Senior high school students think Spain is in Mexico.
@McLarenMercedes Theres a post on this site where some people go out on the street in the US with a blank World map and ask various people to point out random countries. One guy is asked to point out N and S Korea. For the first he touches Australia and for S Korea he tags New Zealand..................
@Heretiik ..... First of all..you tried to be a smart-ass by saying "idiot American"..let me explain something to you..This was Brazil MORON..... thats in SOUTH AMERICA....secondly, your profile video of you playing drums is the WORST! you call that playing??.???. my nephew is better then you and hes TEN years old!!. listen, you're a terrible drummer, so give them up (you'll never be anything) and go back to school and LEARN GEOGRAPHY!!! Seems u need help in that area too!
o my god thats really nasty poor pilot and cameraman but its amazing how i tcomes down on that field and not u n the serounding buildings the last thing the pilot did was saving the lives of more people RIP
I'm Brazillian, this was Record helicopter (Record is a tv channel here) and the heli that recordeed was Globo one.(Another channel). The Pilot died, and the camera man was badly injuried. After the crash, the Globo pilot landed on the field (that actually is a Horse Race Field) got to the crashed pilot and shut down the engine and fuel pump. i didn't watched it live but I saw on the Night news.
It was a Rotor problem on the heli, that make it rotate and fall. Tnx
now thats skill. To land a helicopter while spinning that friggen fast and with the lost of some major control. The pilot did one hell of a job landing it perfectly center in that field, RIP
My brother Markus Bott had been tortured during five and a half years by the German BND which is the renamed GESTAPO. He was assassinated on July 11th 2009 because of our homepage linked on my channel.
Initially, it appeared to be holding altitude spinning, ( loss of tail rotor use), then it begins to loose height rapidly. I would think that centrifugal forces during the initial spinning caused the turbine to flame out , that would explain the sudden smoke, (unburnt kerosene).
Guys somebody died here... the pilot showed great skill avoiding the houses finding an open space... the failure looked serious lots of smoke.... engine/gearbox ???
In tail rotor failure torque reaction from the blades will spin the machine. Forward air speed (I guess about 60 knott) would allow the hull to resist this and the pilot would fly away to an airfield to perform emergency landing.
Without forward speed it starts to spin and you are lost, only option is to get down. Without forward speed or (say) 1,000 ft height then autorotation is not possible. Pilot took the remaining option
Looked like an A-Star, and it cannot dump fuel. I have never seen a helicopter that can. Smoke can also come from other sources (like transmission oil) and considering the apparent tail rotor failure, or drivetrain disintegration, not entirely an unlikely possibility.
civilian helicopters cannot jettison fuel. Even if it could....both of the pilots hands never left the controls until the very end. Helicopters require both hands to fly, let alone autorotate. The smoke was probably a gear box or transmission catastrophic failure. Not a fuel jettison.
This was in Brazil. Maybe civilian helicopters in Brazil can jettison fuel. The "smoke" didn't look like smoke, it looked and dispersed like liquid. You were not in the helicopter, so frankly, you don't know what happened. Maybe the cameraman was trained to assist the pilot in case of emergency.
@TheProPilot Oooh, zinger! How long did it take you to come up with that one? All you pilots and "chopper gods" ain't all you think you are. Most people could do what you do with the proper training and practice. It's not like you were born with the knowledge or ability. Actually, you're stupider than most people because most people wouldn't go up in one of those death traps.
@chopperpilotgod im sry, but he cut-off the engine, is that the reason of the smoke, actually, i fly helicopters in campo de marte, where this heli used to stay, so we know what he did because his passenger survived to this accident and still working with helicopters.
First off by what video I saw this was a tail rotor failure or tail rotor authority problem, second the pilot was not dumping petrol, the pilots only concern at the point of determining a tail rotor problem would be dumping the collective and nosing over to gain airspeed and he maybe had enough height to do that Iam not exactly sure from the perspective of the video, lastly the smoke came from within the tailboom maybe catastrophic failure of the shaft leading to the tailrotor.

i watched that crash on live, that was the news helicopter of the Record News, the crash image was recorded by the news helicopter of Rede Globo, while it was returning to the studio, the place where the Record news helicopter fell is the country club of São Paulo.
LoboalphaMASTER 1 year ago
Wouldn't it be a liitle frightening to watch a helicopter crash, from another helicopter?
hysteriahpc 1 year ago
Normally when you loose your tail rotor, you might be entering immediatly in autorotation to avoid this. Good pilot ? I'm not really sure of that... On panic, well, absolutly !

Idiot American? Sao Paolo is in Brazil DUMB ASS!!!
Adam0691234 1 year ago
@Adam0691234
You're right of course.
McLarenMercedes 1 year ago
@McLarenMercedes Theres a post on this site where some people go out on the street in the US with a blank World map and ask various people to point out random countries. One guy is asked to point out N and S Korea. For the first he touches Australia and for S Korea he tags New Zealand..................

If your helicopter isn't broken, it will be. Shame about the pilot, he did a great job til the end.

Tnx

Respect to all involved.

God rest him.

Really? Which ones?
rotorznwingz 1 year ago
Looked like an A-Star, and it cannot dump fuel. I have never seen a helicopter that can. Smoke can also come from other sources (like transmission oil) and considering the apparent tail rotor failure, or drivetrain disintegration, not entirely an unlikely possibility.
rotorznwingz 1 year ago
civilian helicopters cannot jettison fuel. Even if it could....both of the pilots hands never left the controls until the very end. Helicopters require both hands to fly, let alone autorotate. The smoke was probably a gear box or transmission catastrophic failure. Not a fuel jettison.
chopperpilotgod 1 year ago 9
@chopperpilotgod

TheProPilot 1 year ago
@TheProPilot Oooh, zinger! How long did it take you to come up with that one? All you pilots and "chopper gods" ain't all you think you are. Most people could do what you do with the proper training and practice. It's not like you were born with the knowledge or ability. Actually, you're stupider than most people because most people wouldn't go up in one of those death traps.
ClantonBrothers 1 year ago
@ClantonBrothers about the time it took to right it. You're an idiot.
TheProPilot 1 year ago
@chopperpilotgod im sry, but he cut-off the engine, is that the reason of the smoke, actually, i fly helicopters in campo de marte, where this heli used to stay, so we know what he did because his passenger survived to this accident and still working with helicopters.

of channel 7 The Rede Record !!!
americanboy735 1 year ago
First off by what video I saw this was a tail rotor failure or tail rotor authority problem, second the pilot was not dumping petrol, the pilots only concern at the point of determining a tail rotor problem would be dumping the collective and nosing over to gain airspeed and he maybe had enough height to do that Iam not exactly sure from the perspective of the video, lastly the smoke came from within the tailboom maybe catastrophic failure of the shaft leading to the tailrotor.

Of all the places that could have come down, the pilot did an outstanding job to get it to where he/she did. No doubt saved many lives.
That was a hard impact, so I can only hope they survived.
