Excellent !!!!
@sooterkin1 From what I understand, JJ preferred to write and enjoy a somewhat quiet life of quasi-anonymity. If you browse just a bit more, you will see him joined by those who played his music, and made much of it go "mainstream". Like Clapton, for instance... Not everyone is into the "Lime Light" .
@sooterkin1 How so? Cale says he loves it when people cover his songs and admits it's the greatest form of flattery for a songwriter. He also makes a good bit of money from that. Certainly his "style" has influenced many of the greats and his personality is just as humble and laid back as his songs. I see nothing disgusting in that.
I'm a big groupie of Mr. Polyester, but JJ Cale's version of his own song is so much more haunting and authentic. Same goes for the God of guitar-I'd rather hear JJ Cale perform his songs. Like John Hiatt's songwriting, other amazing artists like Bonnie Raitt record a version of his song that appeals to the masses. Something for everybody's tastes.
Wow, I've been listening only guitars and the mood about 20 years. Should I listen lyrics too? There been enought for me in those areas all these years!
More funny and ironic than sad and serious. If it's so sad and serious, then why is tijuana romanticized, with "senoritas dancing in the moonlight"? You can't tell me that image is serious. Maybe tragic-comic or comic-tragic.
This is the ---what---'91 tour? He hadn't had an album out for a long time, like years. I followed him coast to coast til my car died. Thanks for posting.
The thing that makes it drip reality is his physical resemblance to both Sam Peckinpaw, and Warren Oates, ala "Bring Me the Head of Alfred Garcia," which also has a similar dark tone. It's those big sunglasses, and the salt-and-pepper beard.
well although the quality and (I dunno if its JJ or the quality)the playing kind of suck...unfortunately, but the record on travel log (am I right?) is I think next to "Lies" THE cale-song
beautiful version.!!

This a good version. David Lindley of Jackson Browne fame raises the bar on it. A lot.

As others said before me this a TOP-5 Cale song.On the record there are some moments that
you're just waiting for his guitar to explode.
And his lyrics do have a political(?)spike.
But on this he coulb be a lot better...

It is a "dark Bloody tune" but it's REAL and has the "flavor" of the place. You have to have been there at night:)

instead of a sax.Played a lot sharper in the record though -still one of his best 10 songs...
