This is live. No Lyp Syncing. No machines. Real Alive Music! We love it. Whether it's a video or a concert...This is great music that still holds up in any situation, venue, etc. Tom Petty is a great songwriter.
If it wasn't for Stan leaving, TP would have never have had to get Scott in the new "heartbreakers". Not only did Stan have an awesome and creative drumming style, along with flash, he provided a great harmony vocal, that is very prominent in this song. We sure do miss him!
there's a good reason for that . The Heartbreakers have always cited the Byrds as a band they admired . Petty alson appears on Roger McGuinns's Back From Rio . give it a listen , i know you'll like it .
damn record companies wanted em to say Champagine instead of cocaine but if u ask me, the record company mustve been on cocaine questioning Tom Pettys aamazing lyrics!
@21CenBreakdown They're not underrated. They had a quite a string of top 40 hits, sailed through the 80s with great videos on MTV, they've won Grammys, in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. Don't think anyone underrates them!
Saw them this past summer and in 2000...crowd loved them. Great concert.
I've been a tom petty fan since the early 1980's..what strikes me looking at this video and a few others from the early days was how edgy and fresh the band were. This was the era of new wave and british heavy metal, and the heartbreakers sort of reflected that mood. Their next few albums saw them falling back into byrds/dylan influenced territory, stil great but for me listen to her heart, too much aint enough and i need to know are their best.
Great song--they usually open with this or Jammin' Me (can't go wrong starting a show with either of those!). The band is and was awesome--Tom Mike and Benmont at the core, and the 4 rhythm section combos have all worked (Stan/Ron, Stan/Howie, Howie/Steve--all too brief, and Ron/Steve). Stan was great, but his "snare only" sound wasn't all that flexible. Don't underappreciate Steve--he is a great driving drummer. Plus, he (obviously) doesn't shake his hair around like Stan did.
HAHAHA obviously lol bald....haha that was a good one
i thaink its funny that tom has and african/american drummer when around ten years b4 tom came out with the song REBELS and the vid for it has a jacket lined with a rebel flag then later hes swinging a rebel flag lol HES A CLASSIC lol
everyone in the band is from gainsville florida so....awesome east coast vintage rock... wait,,,, what other rock is there bsides vintage cause the greenhaired heavy metal freak show shit aint rock.
I love tom petty and the heartbreakers i love his stage light sunglasses
Stan Lynch is a highly underrated member of this band. as much as Mike Campbell has a lot to do with the sound of this band (apart from Tom's songwriting) there was a certain vibe to Stan's playing that just seems to be missing after he left.
I like Steve Ferrone , but there's still a big void in the Heartbreakers with Lynch no longer in the picture . To echo your comment , he's definitely one of the most unappreciated muscians ever .
Definitely, Lynch is a big effing kid. He throws a lot of that into his drumming.
As nice of a guy and as good of a drummer as Steve Ferrone is, I thought they should have taken Curt Bisquera as their full time drummer. He has that more-poppy-bonham-esque thing that Lynch had, closer than Ferrone anyway.

As long as I have been a classic rock nut, I always LIKED but not necessarily LOVED Tom Petty. He is definately a great artist with some great classic songs in his catalog but why is he always treated like the KING of classic rock? I'm sorry but Roger McGuinn will always come first BEFORE Petty. And Dylan before McGuinn. It's like classic rock stations put him and Bruce Springsteen to the forefront of everything because there's nowhere else to promote them!
Petty has had staying power where McGuinn has not. Dylan is a living legend but c'mon....it's over lol. He changed the world musically a long time ago. He's not the man anymore. Petty is played because Petty's music is timeless.
Honestly, Petty's latest offerings haven't exactly impressed me as "timeless" any more than Dylan's have. I don't think there's any 1 "king" of classic rock anyway- they've all offered something unique to the genre, but the earlier music seems to be what draws a lot of new fans into the fold.
I actually had a limited edition Gibson flying V in about 1972 serial #180 I recall. Similar to his. Neck was too narrow for me, traded it in on a Les Paul which I still have. And I love playing this song on it. (In case you wondered why I even mentioned it...)

ferrone is a pro's pro no doubt but ...
from a fan's point of view (mine anyway) a a band's kinda like a family and once there's change it seldom retains the orig good vibe
lynch may not be as good a drummer as ferrone -- few are -- but lynch's departure certainly left a void that hasnt een filled my dos pesos

Dude! If you think that neck is narrow, try a Rickenbacker. Narrowest necks on any guitar you'll ever find.
But I love mine and I wouldn't change a thing.
