  • I spoke to a father who clearly did NOT have a son with autism and he bodly told me "I know my son isn't autistic, but if it gets him behavioral services at school, then so be it..." That really disgusts me, as I have a son with severe autism. The word autism is being used for so many of the wrong reasons. I see kids with ADHD, celiac disease, and just simple speech delay being given the autism label. Very disturbing.

  • Its horrible that you have to adhere to the "label" just so you can qualify for services. Yes there is a stigma and so many people are quick to assume your child is "a retard". Even worse if its a misdiagnosis.

  • I've written an article on this topic. To view this article, simply visit my channel and access the link. Thanks again.

  • I don't believe he's autistic. People shouldn't try to dismiss parents' concerns about the stigmas regarding autism. These stigmas are serious. Ultimately, the parent is the greatest expert about his child. He knows better than anybody what's going on.

  • Your right, doctors do dismiss parents views more often than not.

  • Thank you, Ritterby. I'm very glad that somebody else is resisting the "autism" label. My son has been repeatedly diagnosed with autism in order to qualify him for special education services. I believe he really has Sensory Integration Dysfunction, but the school system doesn't seem to care. He does have neurological and behavioral issues, and he does need help.

  • Translation of the good Dr: "if services are available:> If money is available. Dr: "if the child qualifies"> If my department qualifies", Dr: " if they are delayed, .. they qualify for those services.."> We changed the way a diagnosis is arrived at to anything goes. Dr:"there is more to autism than just that little slice"> Damn, there is a lot of money for schools with kids who qualify for services, so we changed the definition of autism to include more and more kids".

  • Basically, its a cruel scam, and we really should not put up with this bullshit. If funds were allocated for kids with hunchbacks, i guarantee schools would suddenly finds scads of little hunchbacked kids all over the place. -and of course only a credentialed teacher could properly know if a child "qualified".

  • I know a lady whose child was recently labeled autistic. The "diagnosis, made by the teacher, was absolutely ludicrous, and we all know the child is actually exceptionally bright, and extremely sociable. It seems every so often teachers, and administrators alike experience a wave of a certain "awareness" of a given disability. I wonder how closely these trends follow budget allocations?

  • Underinformed people, please consider that the diagnostic "label" classifying an Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is completely different, better defined and much more precise than any measurement of intelligence or even school performance because it is based solely on behaviors and signs that are easily observable.

  • furthermore (I need to learn how to respond in fewer than 500 characters)

For us, it helps to have the label. I don't think the fact that he is Autistic equals any sort of intelligence diagnosis.

  • The time the Developmental Pediatrician took is just a portion of my son's (accurate, appropriate) diagnosis. Before we met her (for all of 20 minutes, during which, Ezra had "shut down", and who could blame him?) we had ultrasound on his head before his fontanelle closed, he had a CT scan at age 2, we had seen Endocrinologist, Neurologist and a Geneticist. A lot was ruled out first. so, spending 20 minutes with my sleeping nearly-three year old was not all the dx was based on.

  • within 30 minutes they said my daughter was autistic, at a school....its sad,,see my video responce im posting soon

  • I heard Danielle say, "I expect my son to be somewhere in that mid-range." So unless you're Will Hunting or a fucking drunk monkey, we are all mid-range. When did she say Mediocre? That means NOT adequate enough. To be ORDINARY. To be mid-range doesn't mean that you're ordinary. It means you fall in between the spectrum of genius and vegetable. Fucking Einstein was mid-ranged.

  • Whoah, hold yer horses- it's nothing to get too upset about. Personally, I have no problems with my diagnosis- why shouldn't I be? that's what i am and I can't change being autistic the same way as I cannnot change the fact that I am a human.

  • You're right, after reading my last comment it definitely sounds worse then how I wanted it to. I curse too damm much in my writing, I think I need to work on that. I'll walk my horse from here.

  • Wait a mintue- how is "Mediocre" a better label than "Autistic"? I would find it very frustrating for people to be too scared of even uttering the word "autistic". I really do hate it when people say that I am "A person affected by autism". I'M AUTISTIC! It's so much easier to say that.

  • I feel your pain brother. The trick they are using is a subtlety of changing a positive or negative test, to a gradient. Its like marketing for government revenue for bureaucrats. They want that government cash cow, even if its only half a cow at a time. Yes, i am affected by cow. Moo

  • Many parents don't like the idea of their child having some kind of disorder, so they go to very doctor, read every book on the subject and beg to God that they can change their child. The problem is that their negative and "I'm-fighting-a-war" like attitude brushes off onto their child and it can make them feel very inadequete and unsure of themseleves.

  • Yes, I was expecting this very response. I understand your point. Parents would not end up in a "war" mentality if they did not feel utterly helpless at the hands of colossal arrogance from administrators who are arbitrarily assigning labels to perfectly normal children. I was one of those children they tried to label. They claim to be the sole qualified agency to determine these things, dismissing the judgment of parents and even outside professional assessment.

  • Something else i have noticed is a pattern of children who get to "qualify for services, tends to correlate to the parents economic status. This is not a normal situation. This is judgment compromised by criteria set for the dismemberment of funds to the schools. Many children with otherwise bright promising futures end up pigeon holed so that some arrogant bitch can satisfy the criteria for a grant. Gross False classification of children should be a criminal offense.

  • Qualifying for services? Ah, I understand. That frustrates me that people would assume that just because the child doesn't live in a broken home that they do not qualify help. The government needs to be a bit more organised and get their priorities fixed.

  • I should clarify: the parents whose children are getting labeled are the ones who lack the resources to fight the decision. I was fortunate in that my parents were able to send me to several psychiatrists, for objective evaluations. Why did it take multiple Doctors, and a damn lawyer to get the schools attention? But guess what, that bitch of a teacher managed to go on randomly selecting exactly one unlucky boy from each class for the next ten years for "labeling".

  • Eventually the parents in the community became so apprehensive of this teacher they flooded the administration with transfer requests the neighboring school. The administration decided to randomly re-assign the teacher and not disclose which grade or class would have her next. The parents in the community had to ban together and got legal council. Would you like to guess what kind of hell that whoring bitch of a teacher put those kids through in class?

  • I don't deny that many doctors will make up some fake diagnosis if they don't understand a situation. Earlier, I was referring to parents wanting to take away labels from their kids when it is obvious that the child is still [insert disorder here], but you're absolutely right. Doctors need to do their job right and stop acting like everyone worships them.

  • Kurai, several things need to change. Teachers need to understand that they are not God as well If an independent Dr, says the child is normal, and the school feels different, thats to damn bad. The Dr wins. If a panel of Doctors, find the classification was ludicrous, some should loose their teaching credentials forever, tenure be damned. Admins are simply morphing the definitions of these labels in hopes of garnishing ever more public funds. This is tantamount to fraud, and needs to stop.

  • I agree with you. My friend, when she was at school, wasn't getting the support she needed. She was sent to a behaviour needs base but she didn't have behaviour problems. They used to patronise her and didn't undestand the nature of her disorder. I don't know if this is fits into your arguement but I felt it needed to be shared.

  • christschool: Most aren't.

The truth is, most aren't that smart, or even average.

And yes, misdiagnosis is EXTREMELY common, I've heard.

  • That's very true...

  • Great stuff as always... Who are u workin for? I miss doing those pieces

  • Thanks... I'm still active duty. That story was just for one of my college classes at Syracuse. I'm only here for another month then back to the real Army. You should put some of your civilian work on Youtube, I'd love to see it.

  • Wow, Danielle wants her son to be mediocre! She is quite ill informed. Many autistic children are actually at the top of their class in academics, some are not but to say I would rather my child be mediocre than autistic is sad.

  • no, she said midrange. i think what she is trying to say is what you and your community preaches. she is saying that she is not trying to push her kid to achieve achieve achieve! she is saying she accepts that he is who he is and she is not being pressured for him to meet what might have once been her expectations. she is being realistic. but we both may be reading too much into it...it is just a short exert that they took that line from. she may have went on to elaborate.
