everyone is so freaked out and i'm sitting here wondering what the hell is wrong with me because i thought it was hilarious and was so sure this was a comedy and i'm kind of getting the vibe that it isn't...
First time I watched this, I was watching random TV, and I saw this same scene. From that moment, I knew it was going to be a famous scene, it's perfect.
Robert Blake does not blink once throughout that whole scene, and he has no eyebrows. No wonder his stare is so penetrating. If I were Bill Pullman, I'd need an underwear change after filming that scene.
Well that's a demon in disguise who interacts with a human (if you believe in metaphysics) which gives birth to demon posession stories, human vs demon interaction that's what i think David Lynch wanted to portray. It could be assumed that he is the one that recorded his house.
What's the name of that song? I love David Lynch's use of music and sound design. He needs to do a full on fantasy or sci-fi movie, or a continuation/end to Twin Peaks, whether in movie form or tv series. Laura Palmer did tell him she'd see him in 25 years, ...and there was that little issue of the sheriff's new best friend, Dale Cooper, now being an evil doppleganger, who just smashed his head into a bathroom mirror..... What the hell happened after THAT?!
Strange and prophetic that Robert Blake would play the Mystery Man here in a movie about a guy who is framed for killing his wife. Later Blake would have similar circumstances in real life.
Does bill pullmans tattoo have anything to do with the plot? its weird how we only get a glimpse of it in this scene...there (i believe) is significance in seeing the tattoo at this point... but what does it represent?
Horror directors take note. This is how you create real terror. You create mood and atmosphere and suspense like this. Not some torture porn scenario or some monster jumping out screaming "BOO!"
The 90's Luke Perry hair was awesome. And on a related note to the ladies: Please, never return to the 90's short haircuts. They suck! Example: The backs of 2 women standing next to tan blazer guy at 0:21 If this is you, stop it! On second thought, if that's you, I'm sorry, and I'll be your friend, but seriously, grow it out. Oh, and this is a good scene.
He just took away everyone's personal feeling of safety in their own homes and he did it with powdered make-up, black lip stick and an old shitty phone...wtf.
Pregnant pauses and awkwardly stilted banter is really hard to pull off without sounding forced or corny - Lynch finds the right actors and directs them perfectly.
i rewatched this recently and i reckon mystery man (mm) is death and they had actually met before but not in an in-person sense. he's a deep dark part of fred's subconscious. it shows later that he killed his wife but has no memory of it happening. i reckon mm is this dark festering part of fred's mind that formed when fred started suspecting that his wife was having an affair. the jealousy and rage slowly built up in him and that's where he and mm met before. he unconsciously invited him in.
yeah, this scene is definitely biggest highlight of the movie - i can't forget it after long long time like all this movie (and a lot of other movies from lynch)... and its a lot of movies I dont know what they are about even if I saw them last week.
An actual STARGATE/PORTAL-THING was captured on film. The footage can be found within the short-film entitled "SUDDEN PORTHOLE", which is currently parked at the PROJECT CAMELOT YouTube page (it's under the George Noory video).
I'm not selling anything...I'm just trying to spread the word about the unseen-dimensions we find ourselves embedded in.
My BLOG contains the peripheral data regarding the movie and is where I reply to the "debunkers" (use search words "Sam Zurick" & "BLOG"). THANKS!!
@toopoable "Love is kinda crazy with a spooky little girl like you." It's "Spooky" made popular by the Atlanta Rhythm Section. Not sure if it is original to them.
thanx for the upload of this creepy beyond creepy scene, The only scene I really remember from this 1. I was a huge Lynch fan with Eraserhead,Blue Velvet,Wild at Heart and Twin Peaks, but I felt this was a muddled mess and Mulholland Drive even more so.
You're watching some film and there comes this scene where some weird shit happens and what ever the films genre is you think to yourself: "This must be a sequence where the character is dreaming/hallucinating."
You're watching a David Lynch film there comes this scene where some weird shit happens and you think to yourself: "So this is just a regular scene." And directly after that you start thinking that this is: A: Dreams B:Hallucinations C:Another dimension D:All of the above
I uhhh went back to my car to get my gun & uhhh. Lost it. NO WAIT! I had the gun on me, & I chose to park two blocks away from the restaurant because I wanted to go for a walk, stretch my legs, You know? So I had the gun forgot I had it, lost it, found it then shot my wife. NO I DIDN'T MEAN THAT. Someone mugged her & shot her. That's what I meant.

President: I know there is much to learn from each other if we can make a truce. We can find a way to co-exist. Can there be a peace between us? Mystery Man: Peace? NO PEACE! President: What is it you want us to do? Mystery Man: Die... Die.
Very scary. This scene makes me want to see the film. But something about the mystery mans mannerisms reminded me of George Takei (strange I know) and on the other line imagined him saying "Goldilocks is here in bed, waiting for papa bear to come home ha ha..oh my,"
This scene would've been a lot better if Bill Pullman wasn't such a shit actor... unless, for some bizarre reason, Lynch told him to channel Steven Segal at that point....
David Lynch must be the king of this kind of creepy scenes. The creepiest scene I've ever scene was the one
when Laura Dern shoots the guy in end and his face changes and he screams and waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh!!!
, in 'Inland Empire'. Damn it, I'll never forget that face.
The way the music STOPS for the conversation and then starts over again, makes you think this really may be happening in this guy's head, or dream or whatever purgatory this whole movie was in.
I saw Mullholland Drive recently & it blew my face off with it's weirdness, but low and behold this looks like it might step up antother notch, I must scope this out!
I wonder if anyone's ever done this as a prank on someone (gotten someone else to be at their house, let in by a housemate or something, it must be doable). It would be a good one.
@graemeoliver84 - i wonder if anyone's actually bilocated in a satanic manner and actually been in both the victims house and the party they're attending when the phonecall was made. while made-up like the character singing the Roy Orbison song in Blue Velvet.
This scene is a thousand times scarier when you know that the actor who played that pale man (Robert Blake) was arrested for the murder of his wife five years after this movie came out.
Creepy. Just say David Lynch and it's bound to be creepier than your average nowaday horrorslasher with 20,000 deaths and some nutjob with a knife or a fish hook.
This is why I love Lynch's movies...full of incredibly nightmarish scenes like this...
