You see, for example, Boeing was ready to supply us with a whole load of stuff that Rafale and Typhoon also promised. The difference is the logistical circumstances. The reason they have roadlanding capabilities is (simplified) so that it won't depend on airfields that make for huge targets in an invasion.

And you don't put a conscript in a plane like this, the pilots are supposed to be and are full-time professionals, not conscripts.

@leonwiganer raport after red flag he Gripens flew a total 346 hours over 225 flights. Of 103 planned flights, 98 were actually flown. Four flights were cancelled due to bad weather which grounded the entire 35th Air Expeditionary Wing. And another flight were cancelled because of a faulty Litening pod.

A spare aircraft had to be used on only four occasions.

The total avaliability of the Gripens during the exercise was 99%.

Very underrated fighter. Cost effective, reliable, awesome AAM and AGM weapons package and compares very favorably with our own F16. My only problem with the Gripen is that there are not more of them. Sweden produces very fine fighters, starting with the SAAB 35 Draken in the 1950's but which can still be used as an effective front line fighter today!

@foxrecon19d It isn't under-rated. US industries arm-twisted Norway, Netherlands, Denmark and Finland to acquire F-16s and accept American weapons. The Swedes were already this close to making the entire Nordic region a Gripen-armed area.

Unfortunately as US being the big boss, most countries are bullied to buy F-16s and Swedes are asked to stand down. This is what gives Gripen its under-rated image. Otherwise it is more agile and far more superior to the F-16s due to its characteristics.

@Saffronwing1 actually, the F-16 may be slightly less maneuverable(it has a higher wing loading but superior T/W ratio), but it also has a similar max takeoff weight, 3 more external pylons, MUCH better electronics and infinitely superior radar, a higher speed and better range, it also is easier and cheaper to maintain and costs less than 1/3 the price, also it can carry superior american missiles and bombs unlike the JAS-39. the F-16 is the best fighter on the planet for its price hands down.

@Gogies777 actually, the F-16 and JAS-39 both have a variable cost per flight hour of around $5000, the F-16 however has a much higher T/W ratio, meaning it would have equal maneuverability when fully loaded compared to the JAS-39(because the JAS has canards). and a F-16C block 50/52 costs around $20million whereas the JAS-39 costs up to $60million. also the F-16 has more than 4000lbs higher max takeoff weight than the JAS and has 3 more pylons. the F-16 also has a farther range and equal speed-

@Gogies777 export fighters are always more expensive than locally produced aircraft. even the HAL FGFA costs $100million a pice where the Pak-Fa costs $50millon, even though they are both basically the same aircraft. also the F-16 offers exceptional maneuverability, rage, ceiling, radar, and low price WITH its larger payload. it is a much more well rounded fighter that is a much better bang for your buck than possibly any other fighter.

@Gogies777 the F-16C 30 uses the AN/APG-68. research the range on this radar. 300km is its max range, not particularly against fighters mind you. also in the advent of a war it is very difficult to destroy enemy airfields by any means(with their heavily defended airspace it would take ground troops to destroy it, but they would most likely be destroyed by the planes from that air base). also the only page i could find saying the JAS-39 wasnt locked also said it downed a Typhoon...which is false.

@Gogies777 determine wether it is friend or foe and take the appropriate coarse of action. also the F-16s used in RED FLAG as the aggressors are the F-16A which use the AN/APG-66 radar...which has a max range against fighter size targets of about 30 miles, which means they would most likely have been shot down before they could detect the JAS-39, but that doesnt means the JAS-39 cant be locked on to.

@Gogies777 the F-16 can and is still receiving upgrades(the new F-16E/F used by the Saudis uses the AN/APG-80 AESA radar, conformal fuel tanks, jammers, and newer targeting systems). but the reason the US isnt upgrading its F-16s is because they will soon be replaced by the far superior F-35. and if the nation you are fighting is not equipped with SAMs then it doesnt really matter what plane you have, you could use a P-47 and cause damage. also the JAS-39s STOL capability is not as dramatic as-

@Gogies777 the meteor is not any better than the AIM-120, it has slightly higher range but thats it. also aircraft with true STOL capabilities are the AV-8B and the F-35, the JAS-39 would still require a runway to take off, it even shows in this video. also the AN/APG-80 is immensely superior to even the AN/APG-68, which is still better than the JAS-39s radar, also the JAS-39 does not come with conformal fuel tanks and jammers, those must be installed later. so the F-16E is in a class of its own

@Gogies777 the F-16E would cost around the same as the JAS-39 but would be superior in every way. also the F-35 has the most advanced radar ever put on a fighter(no other radar offers that kind of performance against ground and air targets),the most advanced jammers,360 degree detection,HMDS,very long range RWR,better aerodynamic performance while fully loaded than either the F-16 or F-18,stealth,and a much lower maintenance cost than previous stealth aircraft. $122million is WELL worth it.

Volvo not only increase the power and decrease the heat signature, they also replace all the blades so they can handle a swarm of birds (even frozen) since the Swedish planes only have one engine and not two as they was originally designed for.

Nej, det är knappast den nuvarandes regerings fel att vi har ett knapphändigt försvar. Men saken är den att utan de föregående nedskärningarna så skulle det varit en ännu större omorganisation just nu.

Men jag håller helt klart med om att det skulle ha varit bättre ifall vi haft ett relativt starkt försvar jämnt över istället för att rusta ned mellan varje stort klig i Europa.

Man behöver ju inte vara ett snille för att fatta att freden inte kommer hålla i all evighet.

@Scenium Our government is really stoopid. We are down to like 3 airforce squadrons, yet, we have 300 Leopard 2 MBTs!!!!!!!

150 of them is THE veeeeery latest models.

From what I know hunting tanks is THE thing all airforces do, first it is air superiority, but after that, what do they do? they go tank busting not cloud busting. And tanks are so EASILY found on the ground by airforce jets. So, why we have 300 L2s and so few Gripens we are loosing air superiority???? stupid gov.

@MajSolo Antar att du är svensk :P men vi har 7 divisioner med JAS 39 Gripen, cirka 130 stycken. Gripens jakt kapacitet, dvs att angripa andra flygplan kan andra flygplan inte ens mäta sig med, p.g.a datalänk, störsystem, kraftfull radar etc. Så vårat luftrum är väl skyddat. Sen är det väldigt svårt att lokalisera stridsvagnar ute i skogen om man inte på förhand vet vilket område de befinner sig i. Att ta sig igenom det svenska luftrummet och slå ut våra stridsvagnar har t.o.m USA problem med =)

@Scenium Sadly it doesnt seem to matter what party is in power, socialdemocrats and the government we have today seem to be against sweden having a military force.. and now that they have killed the previous system of conscription and gone to fully contracted personnel it doesnt even seem like they are going to be able to recruit enough soldiers.. sweden needs conscription so that the young who dont have anything to relate to regarding military can find their place there during their service.

Ive heard some say it did well but dont know if thats true.

I think it played a different type of role to most other jets.

I've heard that they performed average against MiG-29s., but got their asses kicked in simulations against the newest Russian fighters like the Su-35.

JAS Gripen maybe is the worlds fourth best jet fighter, but I have to say JAS Gripen and F22 Raptor and MIG is the absolutley nicest looking jet fighters!

The NG Jas 39 Gripen is awesome with many new features as twice the power output from upgraded engine..and even more sofisticated electronics..and more than 80% is upgraded on the NG Jas39. Thankz for the awesome video..lot´s of thankz=)
