The most unique of all of the Zep sounds.. the sounds of Jone's speaking... (I always thought he sounds kinda like he's eating something... and talking)... PS... This is TOMORROW TOMORROW TOMORROW....TOMORROW.... :-)
Led Zeppelin took the sounds from every angle, every corner and put them into the mix. That is why they were sooo awesome. Not really the playing which yes, is also a HUGE PART, but the way they recorded the sounds and how they were live. This is probably one of the only bands in history who were AWESOME live and unbelievable on the albums.
It's amazing how something simple in concept like microphone placement can make such a huge difference in how an instrument sounds. Just moving a few feet here and there makes all the difference in the world.
Try micing a guitar amp and moving the mic around and back and forth, while listening through headphones. You'll find thousands of areas with unique sonic characteristics, each one giving the guitar a different feel!
@figaz555 I agree...I had a Stanley clarke signature Delux...I can't believe I traded it...it was the best sounding thing ever....I must have had a meltdown in my mind in trade that
Conan568, they didnt quite get to the stage of hanging mic`s down chimneys, but they did experiment a lot at Headley Grange in the great hall way with mic placings. They got some huge brilliant drum sounds for Bonhams powerful style from this, so much so that Bonzos sound from When the Levee Breaks was sampled so many times in the 80s by The Beastie Boys and Public Enemy amongst other rap stars at the time! Thats proper respect from a completely different style of music!! Bonzo and rap go figure!
He is underrated??? What the hell. Not for me - He is one of the best Bass&Keyboard player & composer from best Rock-band of the world!!!

when the levee breaks has got to be my 2nd favorite LZ song...behind Kashmir of course. John Bohnam was unspeakably cool in those..

They hung mic's down chimneys and they put amps and mic's in the strangest places, all to get certain sounds.
