As for the DC-10s, I've heard of the maintainance issues when they first came out but were corrected. Unfortunately, the initial bad publicity pretty much soured the reputation. It was sad because McDonnell Douglas made great aircraft. I personally flew in the DC-10 many times and found it to be a comfortable, quiet airplane.

this is what happened, one of the leading edge flap bolts came loose and punctured the fuel tank right above the engine. fuel started leaking into the hot engine and caused the fire. saw the picture of the hole it made. it was about an inch wide.

As a senior airline manager and pilot, I would say that there is always intense public and media speculation after an incident such as this. This can be damaging and misleading. The theories should be left to the professional accident investigators as it is only they who are in a position to accurately point the finger of blame, be that at the crew/airline/engineering or any manufacturer.
