I hear there is a remake coming in 2012. This time it's machine guns and world travel. I'm sure people would love it only for that, but will they know about the original? I hope it's as good as this masterpiece.
This trailer is not that good really: it does not start to compare to the actual greatness of the movie itself. I just saw it for the first time and it was amazing. Heartily recommend it. Like already noted by others, it is very multifaceted. It has bravery and fear, anger and compassion, stupidity and cunning, comedy and poetry ... It's brilliant, do not be scared away by the Japanese and the black and white.
Though Monsieur Kurosawa was merely a film maker (also the greatest that ever lived in the tide of times) I do account him as high as a tragic poet (like Homer, Shakespeare, Euripides or Sophocles) as his movies remind me very much of the heroic tales of the Edda: The events depicted are small but a great manifestation of the old warrior culture and spirit; and the people in it are so utterly and truly human that one does not feel like watching a movie (work of fiction) but seeing a true event.
Not only the brilliant filming and very natural scenery (fields, towns, woods and rain all seem to be authentic and to belong truly to the old age) but also the sober and creditable fighting: No vulgar Californian beefcake from Austria manifesting the wet fantasies of juvenile boys (of all ages) but normal folks doing serious combat; and no slaying of the enemy without own losses; but also the bitterness and beauty of life and nature combined with inspiring music for rather unspectacular events.
No boring soulless computer animations and no ridiculous acrobatic jumping; and certainly a complete absence of cheap schemes of good against evil: The characters have a quite normal personality with flaws and strengths, virtues and vices; while the tales are modelled after real life: Robbers attacking a village and no super evil bad person a stupid costume planning in to destroy all life on earth with damp-rags! Discovering the master works of Akira Kurosawa was like finding an antidote for me.
Best action movie. Spoils you for almost anything else. I would say that few movies match its action scenes. I am thinking of Yojimbo, French Connection, Godfather 1. After that it is difficult to think of action movies that even come close. A DVD note. The early scene with the skinny samurai with the hollow cheeks, if slowed, shows his tremendous skill. I am talking about the scene where his friend insists that he has won the wooden sword duel and forces a fight with real blades. Slow that down
I love the idea that a B/W Japanese film from 1954 has got characters, beauty and humour that we still can enjoy so much today! The actors are so good. It's the only Kurosawa-film I've seen till now, but I've ordered a box set! Can't wait!
@EscargoTouChaud Cheers mate. I'm trying to get all his movies. Blood of Throne, Sanjuro, Ran as well. But Ikiru, Seven Samurai, Rashomon and Seven Samurai will always be the greatest thing I've seen.

a classic martial arts movie.akira kurosawa is one of asias finest filmmaker, just look at the quality of work here,a fact-the samurais shown here were real life samurais, their swordsmanship is 100% pure and no flashes!
@maxgunn555 True but there is another remake that is being developed right now called " THE Sevene Samurai" due to be released on 2011. Typical of hollywood.
@Tomohawwwk You must have ADD or suffer from an anxiety disorder because in order to understand a film you have to stay awake. So, check this DVD out again, get together with your friends, order pizza and really pay attention this film is considered a masterpiece of filmmaking by the experts and a very good movie by the general public! Enjoy!
This was a great movie, the only thing that turned me off was the length. I know it was never boring and everything was great, I just didn't want to watch 3 hours of battle preparation.
There is really a lot of good things about this film, there is so many good things that no matter what you singel out, it will bee of the higest quality .- use your imagination. Dont forget too look, at the actors and all the ground of psykology that they cover... and so easy that it almost can make one cry happie tears...:-)
@BunchofMovieVideos i think kurosawa has two sides. one is making great fighting scene. the other side is humanitalian. one is like youjinbou the other side is like ikiru seven samurai has both side of himself, so there are many people think seven samurai is best movie in his career anyway in japan, there are many students who study movie do not want to see seven samurai because that is monochrome movie. アホだろ・・・
@solrart Can someone please tell me why Seven Samurai is considered a great film? I knoe Kurosawa is a master but why that film and not one of his others? Also does the film have anything better than just fighting in it please?
Your remark is right, Kurosawa basically do not have interests in the production of action scene, the time of action in his masterpieces, 7 samurai, Yojimbo, etc are short comparatively. People enjoy the process to it and heavy human drama. "13 assassins" made by Takashi Miike this year screened in Venice festival is like 7 samurai, but has powerful, very long, battle depiction.
Great question. Casablanca was just supposed to be a toss-off movie but it moves audiences more deeply than anyone expected. People relate to Bogart's defiant character & the underdog situation he was in. Seven Samurai also has defiant characters fighting against the odds to undo evil forces. The heart of both films tho are the interactions between the characters under stress. Especially interesting are the alliances between people who'd otherwise never get along.
I remember watching this movie in my World History class in high school. It is good to be exposed to a variety of culture such as this. That was a few years ago, but I think that I enjoyed watching this.
I'm 15 and I just saw this film this morning. The Magnificent Seven is good, but this blew it out of the water. I'm gonna have to check out some more Kurosawa films.
This is one of the most magnificient movie of all time. this movie has re-made in many languages like in Hollyood "The Magnificient Seven", and Bollywood (Hindi) it is called "Sholay" in english means Embers or fire. This movie became the biggest grossier of all time around USD160 mil made in 1975. I throughly enjoyed Seven Samurai, it is classic. Then Magnificent Seven is also a very good classic not as good as Original. Then Sholay in hindi is an aultimate SUPERB classic.
A true epic, this movie is so good it almost scares me. I mean its got everything you could want in a movie, Comedy, action, suspense, sadness, romance, and a killer soundtrack, its almost the perfect if such a thing could exist, Its really hard for me to pick favorites in terms of movies but I'd have to say this is probably my favorite of all times. truly a master piece.
Hollywood could never do justice to this film with a remake. Not to say that a western director couldn't pull of a solid interpretation, but the interest of Hollywood is appealing to the masses with mindless entertainment. Wu Tang had it right when they said "Cash rules
@TheShadowWolf91 Is that true? Whatever weapon they choose i predict a truly awful film. There is no way Hollywood can make anything better than the original, which is why i ask what is the point in re-making it? It's money, pure and simple. Hollywood can't make a masterpiece on a time schedule whilst pampering their stars but who cares eh?........pointless. Although i have to admit if a certain Mr Tarantino directed it, i may allow myself to watch it lol
I think the only director that could do the original (some) justice would have to be michael mann...after HEAT, last of the mohicans and public enemies...it could be achieved!
@zastavia Hmmm......i really wouldn't try to remake it in the style of Kurosawa. Total sacrilege! Tarantino could mash it up well enough to be a good enough film in it's own right, he would do it in his style only and is a well known martial arts fim fan which would help imo. Really though i hope they pull the plug on the whole idea.
Los 7 samurais heroica pelicula, siete samurais que arriesgaron hasta sus vidas por cuanto, solo por 3 platos de comida al dia. Hace poco la vi, extraordinaria. Si alguien lo puede subir en español toda la peli please.
I saw both Magnificent Seven and Seven Samurai. I say this is a whole lot better. If you watched carefully, Katsushiro (disciple) kills only one bandit (he's my first favorite). Gorobechi gets a few more with his arrows (my second favorite).
Many of Clint Eastwood's old cowboy westerns were base off of Kurosawa's movies. Even during the late 90's film directors were copying Kurosawas work in there films. Take the film Last Man Standing its a complete copy of Kurosawa's Yojimbo, the only difference is that Last Man Standing takes place in the American south west during the 1920's and Yojimbo takes place in feudal Japan.
Never seen this before. There was a comment I saw in another video that said ,, That this Movie was the Inspiration for George Lucas to make "Star Wars"....I really don't see the relation Thu ?
@ziggy72170....George Lucas liked a lot of Kurosawa movies, [direction & camera shotsetc],Seven Samurai was the first Kurosawa movie he saw but actually 'The Hidden Fortress',with its Hero, action Princess,&comedy duo slaves, was more the idea for the kind of characters he wanted in Star Wars.Star Wars in itself is not a remake of any Kurosawa movie, just ideas & characters etc.
The storyline, the scripts, the character developments (even behind the scenes), the combat (authenticity), cinematography, and more. Add to the fact that this film was made in the years where there are lesser means for stunts and special effects. You don't get much films today that shows cinematography that's real and in your face without being digitally retouched. But my favorite fact is how the characters act as culturally based.
I give 9.8 out of 10. Only because the scene where the farmers are trying to hire samurai; samurai passing by is a little contrived. But all in all this is still a really good film. It can even contend against the films today. I don't know if it exists but I wish this film is re-released in a higher quality alone. No additions, no editing. Just the exact same film but only on an HD or something like that.
I'm not sure what the deal is here. Yes Hollywood has copied many foreign language films in its time but has also produced some of the best films ever made off its own back. And if you're using Kurosawa as an example of how japanese films are superior to Hollywood you should take into consideration that he was himself hugely influenced by John Ford westerns and often critisized by his countrymen for trying to appeal too much to a global audience making very un-Japanese films.
They draw from one another. I think it's definetly true to say that Lucas was very derivative in his works. But he implemented it well. Just like Kurosawa with John Ford.
Very true. It's why he's considered a classic of filmmaking. But a lot of the themes he played with drew inspiration from his stuff. It caused some problems in Japan, where some perceived it as being overly western.
It has some of the greatest cinematography in film ever, it created the concept of a film about gathering a team of heroes, and all in all, it's just a great film.
Any chance of finding one without subtitles? I want to use a trailer of one of Kurosawa's films for a listening exam for my year 12 Japanese class but having subtitles kind of defeats the purpose...
That´s a great movie. I love it. This is completely different at movies we usually watch. This has another rhythm as occidental movies, and don´t have a happy ending (a lot of samurai died u_u).
that's funny how there's a video called "Legend of the Eight Samurai" in the suggestions/related list of this video.

I think the only director that could do the original (some) justice would have to be michael mann...after HEAT, last of the mohicans and public enemies...it could be achieved!
zastavia 1 year ago
@zastavia Hmmm......i really wouldn't try to remake it in the style of Kurosawa. Total sacrilege! Tarantino could mash it up well enough to be a good enough film in it's own right, he would do it in his style only and is a well known martial arts fim fan which would help imo. Really though i hope they pull the plug on the whole idea.

I saw both Magnificent Seven and Seven Samurai. I say this is a whole lot better. If you watched carefully, Katsushiro (disciple) kills only one bandit (he's my first favorite). Gorobechi gets a few more with his arrows (my second favorite).

John Woo also cites the movie as one of his favourites, and an inspiration.

There was a comment I saw in another video that said ,, That this Movie was the Inspiration for George Lucas to make "Star Wars"....I really don't see the relation Thu ?
ziggy72170 2 years ago
@ziggy72170....George Lucas liked a lot of Kurosawa movies, [direction & camera shotsetc],Seven Samurai was the first Kurosawa movie he saw but actually 'The Hidden Fortress',with its Hero, action Princess,&comedy duo slaves, was more the idea for the kind of characters he wanted in Star Wars.Star Wars in itself is not a remake of any Kurosawa movie, just ideas & characters etc.

@himitsunosallychan
But my favorite fact is how the characters act as culturally based.

ive never had a fovourite film until i saw this...this easily takes the cake
dannyboy12357 2 years ago
I give 9.8 out of 10. Only because the scene where the farmers are trying to hire samurai; samurai passing by is a little contrived. But all in all this is still a really good film. It can even contend against the films today. I don't know if it exists but I wish this film is re-released in a higher quality alone. No additions, no editing. Just the exact same film but only on an HD or something like that.

I'm not sure what the deal is here. Yes Hollywood has copied many foreign language films in its time but has also produced some of the best films ever made off its own back. And if you're using Kurosawa as an example of how japanese films are superior to Hollywood you should take into consideration that he was himself hugely influenced by John Ford westerns and often critisized by his countrymen for trying to appeal too much to a global audience making very un-Japanese films.
presseno 2 years ago
They draw from one another. I think it's definetly true to say that Lucas was very derivative in his works. But he implemented it well. Just like Kurosawa with John Ford.
harlequin2262 2 years ago
I don't think that you could really call Kurosawa derivative of John Ford, he was good enough to take things and make it his own.
almanacofsleep 2 years ago
@almanacofsleep
Very true. It's why he's considered a classic of filmmaking. But a lot of the themes he played with drew inspiration from his stuff. It caused some problems in Japan, where some perceived it as being overly western.
harlequin2262 2 years ago
Watched this yesterday, best movie i've seen so far. The music, the characters, the shots, all 10/10.

I don't get this film. Why is it so highly praised?
Could someone explain?

It has some of the greatest cinematography in film ever, it created the concept of a film about gathering a team of heroes, and all in all, it's just a great film.

unrated, not in a bad way, though.
according to what it is rated in other places, it would probably be rated PG-13 or PG in america.

That´s a great movie. I love it. This is completely different at movies we usually watch. This has another rhythm as occidental movies, and don´t have a happy ending (a lot of samurai died u_u).

Even if you know the ending, this a film you can watch about a hundred times a year. Give it a shot anyway. I don't think you will be disappointed.
