The receivers also are trained the change their routes based on what they see, and they have to be on the exact same page as what the QB sees. Also, those "fat" guys can bench a whole soccer team

@dippicusthegreat That depends on how you define skill. Playing QB is probably the hardest thing to do in sports, and athleticism is secondary to brains and toughness for that job. You also underestimate how much thinking goes on to play a seemingly simple job like offensive line. Those guys have to read the defense, figure out which guys are going where and pick the correct man to block in a few tenths of a second. All five guys have to make the same call, every time, or the QB gets mulched.

Then there is the QB position, where it doesn't matter how athletic you are or how much you practice.......if you weren't born the the head for it you will never succeed. QB may be the single hardest spot to play in sports. There is also no other sport in the world that requires as non-physical training. NFL players spend a huge chunk of their time studying film and gameplanning.

Because we don't have big enormous slow people and then small fast people for the majority of the league players the are both big and fast. NFL players appear to hit hard because they have pads on, besides rugby league hits are just as hard. And I'd rather watch 80 minutes of action then 3 hours of "strategic" action.

There is a guy who just entered the NFL that is 6'1" 220 pounds runs a 4.3 40 and has a 40 inch vertical leap. The NFL has far better athletes than any other sport in the world. They are trained for peak performance, where as other sports train for massive cardio.

Take a look at this video "2010 LeGarrette Blount Highlights " This is a guy on my home team. 1.8 m tall, 112kg and can hurdle grown men or smash through a line of 155kg defensive linemen. Runs pretty well too, but not like the real speedsters but probably close to Sonny Bill.

NFL guys don't have to run for 80 minutes, so they can afford to put on an extra 10 to 20 pounds of muscle without the risk of tiring out. So rugby will never have guys with the same size/speed combination as the NFL guys who are trained to perform at the max in short bursts.
@Elthenar I think yes and no, there are plenty of rugby league players who are big and fast because in many aspects they need it for their gameplay. And there are plenty of very big agile rugby players who are that way because they have to be to make top teams.

@dippicusthegreat That depends on how you define skill. Playing QB is probably the hardest thing to do in sports, and athleticism is secondary to brains and toughness for that job. You also underestimate how much thinking goes on to play a seemingly simple job like offensive line. Those guys have to read the defense, figure out which guys are going where and pick the correct man to block in a few tenths of a second. All five guys have to make the same call, every time, or the QB gets mulched.

Only 1.5 yard per carry for him. Right now hes number 18 in defensive players, but i think he said he wants to go higher than that. Look at Haloti Ngata, was a half decent rugby player for Tonga, a small island. Comes to the nfl and he's the most athletic DT in the league, shows how brutal rugby is.

Other sports, such as basketball, futbol, volleyball, tennis, etc. require you to have talent and have practiced the majority of your life to succeed. Examples include many tackles and other positions that never knew of the sport football and are becoming pros with only a few years of playing. I love football, but talent wise its at the bottom of the list.

@downtriangle Football tends to require brains and instincts more than a single refined skill, like tennis. Then there is the QB position, where it doesn't matter how athletic you are or how much you practice.......if you weren't born the the head for it you will never succeed. QB may be the single hardest spot to play in sports. There is also no other sport in the world that requires as non-physical training. NFL players spend a huge chunk of their time studying film and gameplanning.

Because we don't have big enormous slow people and then small fast people for the majority of the league players the are both big and fast. NFL players appear to hit hard because they have pads on, besides rugby league hits are just as hard. And I'd rather watch 80 minutes of action then 3 hours of "strategic" action.

@doggishfool How many 6'6" 280 pound men who can run a 4.6 second 40 are there in Rugby Union. There is a guy who just entered the NFL that is 6'1" 220 pounds runs a 4.3 40 and has a 40 inch vertical leap. The NFL has far better athletes than any other sport in the world. They are trained for peak performance, where as other sports train for massive cardio.
You say 3 hours of "strategic" action like it is a bad thing. I like 10 seconds at a time of sprinting over 80 minutes of jogging.

a rugby game isn't the equivalent of 80minutes of jogging...more like 80minutes of quick action, and there is no way in hell i'd take small amounts of action over 3 hours instead of 80minutes of action.
And unlike in american football, our atheletes are capable of being able to endure 80minutes of action while maintaining the ability to sprint full pace when required and tackle hard as hell when required

@doggishfool I am a big fan of Lomu, the guy was a physical freak. But, who else have you got besides Lomu? The NFL has had Olympic caliber sprinters playing in it, even a guy who won the Olympic gold. The NFL has several guys playing right now that are the same size as Lomu or bigger and nearly as fast.
I am not dogging Rugby by any means, I do respect those guys. But the fact is, they have to be smaller and lighter to run for 80 minutes. NFL guys train for burst, that's why they hit harder.

@doggishfool I just looked up Sonny Bill. The NFL is filled with guys his size or bigger who are just as fast or faster. We have 135kg defensive ends that are probably faster than him. Mario WIlliams for one.
Take a look at this video "2010 LeGarrette Blount Highlights " This is a guy on my home team. 1.8 m tall, 112kg and can hurdle grown men or smash through a line of 155kg defensive linemen. Runs pretty well too, but not like the real speedsters but probably close to Sonny Bill.

@doggishfool I'll admit, I don't truly understand rugby.....but it has greater cardio requirements than the NFL certainly. That is the key to my point. NFL guys don't have to run for 80 minutes, so they can afford to put on an extra 10 to 20 pounds of muscle without the risk of tiring out. So rugby will never have guys with the same size/speed combination as the NFL guys who are trained to perform at the max in short bursts.
