Its a win win situation for everyone! All the soldiers get to have their fill of thrilling blood letting and the peons in the third world don't have to play the part of the targets!
you moron, German goverment decided after World war 2 that they would never use their army in other countrys then germany.. That was also forbidden for them..
That they are in Afghanistan is a huge exeption and they are in the northern provinces.
I think they understand the Dutch sentiment over what can be considered few casualties more then any nation, pretty odd they actually got stationed with our boys/girls.
They havent been warfaring for decades like us.
Must be frustrating for them to have to sit back while others fight.
Sad.
Ohh and brodcra, the amount of casualties isnt a measure of involvement or succes.
Quite the opposite.
Im glad most Dutch see fighting as a sad necessity.
Well, remember that for the fighting over Chora the Australians didn't really take part in the fighting, they refused for some reason. The local Australian commander or the Australian goverment had forbidden that they got in the fight.
But Brodcra is a moron, ignore him. Dutch people are happy with the Australian forces in a dangerous area. They are doing more than our other European "allies."
yes lauwpilske is very right and germany and france and all those big countrys with much power are not very solidary to the rest of the nato infact it seems they behave quite like pussy's they got a big mouth and have much influence but when it really comes to figting they do the small easy things
As an Scottish soldier who has served in Iraq and Afghanistan Im glad for the Dutch and Aussie support and share in their eternal frustration between soldiers and their political leaders.Ignore the politics,do your job,and come home safe and proud. The UK is glad to welcome the Dutch Army to the Battle Proven Few.
Well, a soldier is always one of two. Either someone knowing and of great moral stature or ignorant and of lesser moral stature. Going to war means you either have no clue what war is like and what it is about, or exactly the opposite. These days however, I don't see how anyone with insight into the matter would choose to fight in Afghanistan or Iraq. There are no moral arguments for the wars in those countries and the arguments that have been presented by politicians are fairly hypocritical.
So you have it all figured out eh? If the ISAF soldiers are thugs/mercenaries as you so put it then what of the taliban insurgency? Heroes? They will kill you without hesitation; your stance on the true intent of the war notwithstanding not only b/c you're american but also b/c you're infidel.
Y'know, if you look under that romanticized image of freedom fighters trying to free their country from supposed oppression, it's really just a old regime trying to regrab power. The taliban are mainly pashtun who encompass all of the south and specifically NW pakistan where they getting all their recruits. what of the other ethic groups? the uzbeks, tajiks etc?
If i recalled they banned together as the northern alliance in the 90s to fight the taliban. They fight shoulder with the ISAF and the taliban with foreign extremist organizations.. so really that idea about it being their (own) country is not entirely accurate.
As for the opium... it's production was at it's peak at the height of taliban rule and they banned it b/c of pressure from the druglords to adjust the excess in supply and low demand as it decreased street profitability. Are the ruling elite the drug cartels you're refering to?

Vienna, 24 May 2001 (RFE/RL) -- Officials at the UN Drug Control Program, or UNDCP, who recently toured Afghanistan say that the Taliban's ban on opium-poppy cultivation is in almost total effect in the areas the militia controls.
The officials, who accompanied a special tour of drug experts from UN-member countries to Afghanistan last month, say they saw no signs of opium-poppy cultivation in the fertile eastern and southern areas that last year produced 75 percent of the world's opium crop
I salute you Dutch and Australian allies, no doubt you are fighting a war that is of less losses than in Iraq, I think I would contribute that to discipline and a better terrain. Nice reporting. It's a shame you are the same journalist who wrote a lousy article about the suicide attack on Private Timo Smeehuyzen, which in my opinion is unworthy of a good journalist. Everyone can make mistakes, it takes a real man to admit he's wrong...
But it's true that our politicians are fighting for the reputation of the Netherlands of being a country of peace and human rights. The Dutch military is fighting for their reputation of being an effective, reliable and serious military force. So whatever happens in Afghanistan is being monitored here (in the Netherlands) very closely.
So far 68 Britons and 66 Canadians died in the provinces of Helmand and Kandahar, both bordering Uruzgan province (which is also the birthplace of Mullah Omar). This makes a lot of people here nervous.
But it's not just a matter of our guy's getting killed, also being the party who kills (the enemy or civilians) can hurt our reputation regarding international law (Housing the international war crimes tribunal). The Netherlands doesn't wanna lose that reputation and therefor any 'kill' is one to many.
Also..We knew very wel what we were getting ourselfs into from the start. We knew the risk and we learned from the Srebrenica disaster not to be armed to lightly again. But the Netherlands is like a big village of 16 million people. Any soldier's death feels like it was someone from around the block.

They are in their own country! The Taliban totally eradicated opium production according the the UN's own figures.
Now the opium has been restored and the Taliban is looking the other way because they need the cash to fight the foreign invaders.
