You're a lucky fellow, in my opinion. I'd give just about anything for a cab ride in a big steamer like this, although even a small engine would be a special treat. I also think it neat that the crew let you have a go at the whistle, which is always a pleasure to hear, and a special privilege indeed.
I run simulators and live steam models for the time being, but one day I'm hoping to get a shot at the engineer's seat and run the full sized version, even if only for a day.
@EMD645E Without Doyle or the efforts of the Union Pacific Steam Crew, We'd never have a chance to experience the AWESOME sights & sounds of these magnificent jewels of railroad history.
i cant stop slapping myself! Why? You are SOOO LUCKY!!!! That must have been SO much fun. Let me quess. You had to be 21 because of safety. thats why i cant ride in nkp 587 once she gets restored
@GoldenCreekValleyRR Actually you only had to be 16 to buy raffle tickets for the cab ride. Luckily I had just turned 16 a few months before. It was definitely an incredible experience!
wow buddy thats a real honor! back here in california at orange empire the guys put me to work and make me run the injector which is kinda fun but i wanna sit engineer seat!
Ross, You've got a good method for that whistle! Is this locomotive you're operating a steam locomotive, because when you leaned out the window and pulled the whistle, I could tell it was possibly a steam locomotive, which my dad and I refer to as a pufferbelly. I've ridden on a train, and it was for the Fall Foliage Train Ride, and the cars were old Pennsylvania Railroad train cars, which are beautiful cars to ride in!
@kurtdog119 Yes, this is a 4-8-4 steam locomotive, referring to the wheel arrangement. And technically I wasn't operating it, the engineer just let me sit in the seat to blow the whistle for a railroad crossing. Thanks for watching!
You've got a good pattern for that whistle, Ross! I didn't think you'd have any pattern as good as the one you used at that railroad crossing! The main thing to do is lean out the window and blast that whistle at each crossing, and have a good whistle pattern.
Omg u are the luckiest guy in the world that had to give u goose bumps pulling the whistle of the 4449 OMG sorry man i have to say i hate u at this point. But i don't even know u so its all cool. Nice Job Blowing that whistle. this has to be one of my favorite videos of all time.:)
I have a few more shots leaning out the window, and I can't recall the fireman's name, but I have a shot with him in it. I'm working on loading them now.
Very cool! Welcome to the "I am a hogger" club. I think this counts and yes I am jealous!

No, but I think it's a different one from what the Daylights originally used.

Well, 4449's whistle is off of a Great Northern Z-Class Challenger... sounds pretty good :)
