The Christians destroyed a whole lot of its magic. There was a henge and a few massive cursuses just a few metres away... all of em obliterated in the last few recent decades. Before that there were probably many features on the mound with the monolith.
I think the monolith survived cos of its beauty.
You weren't born in the wrong age. Reality of life back then was pretty hellish and unstable. Learn to love it and celebrate it.. take it back.
