  • i am interested in buying a santur and was curious what is the price range? how much is a high quality santur?

  • @firefly7927 I am glad to hear that you are interested in santur. I don't know much about current santur price range in Iran and you have to ask that question from different shops and santur-makers. A high quality santur should cost no less than $1000.

  • @firefly7927

i have one buyd in iran for 3000 swedish kron 400-500 $

  • Ostad I am having problems with tuning the white strings. sometimes I tune the white strings correctly but the note on the same set of strings on the other side of the bridge is totally out of tune, then I grab the strings and move them about a bit, and tune the set again and somehow it magically works, but it only sometimes works.

I would really appreciate if you could address this.

also I can easily tune the brass strings but I feel the steel strings are harder to tune, is that normal?!

  • @danielghofrani Yes, that's normal. Tuning the white strings are more difficult. Sometimes the metal on the bridge is rusty and therefore you need to move the string up and down to transmit the tension from the right side to the left. Also, please make sure to have the bridge in the right position by testing the first string before tuning all 4.

  • Ostad emkanesh hast ke faghat ba jabeja kardaneh kharak, dastgahe shour be homayoun ya mahur taghir peyda koneh?

    Thanks

  • @farshadiran021 Yes, you can. But it only applies to the white strings.

  • Ostad , I bought the tuner, and after few years again in UK, i am back on track with my friends.

we might do a show in a small festival.

we might play some Bandari music with chinese girls belly dancing :))

  • ah ah thank you !!!

    not confusing just chirurgical ...

the 4forth register was used ???

do you made a sound trax when i can listen the sound of this registrer ?

i have found how to tune my santoor with long patience near 4 hour just for the second and third register the right proportion is not really 2/3 1/3

the mathématics was not possible sometimes .

the ear are the greatest tools .

i think when i have the time :)

i search how to tune the 4th register

    best regard and good continuation

  • Yes, if you listen to Shabdiz, you see that I use the highest G which is on the 4th register of 7th bridge. I use the rest as well, but I don't have a video to point you to.

I agree, it's not a mathematical division, because the rise of the strings impact their tension. Great observation. And enjoy using the 4th register in the future.

  • thank ou so much for your explanation !

recently i have found a Persian santoor and when i have received this beautifull instrument .

i have a see problem with the bridges ,all are moved and i don't found the correct place .

if his possible can you give me the position from each side for put correctly my bridges ?

    best things from france

    zytoun

  • @kytibou Hi Zytoun, Thanks for your question. It depends how confident you are technically to change the position of the bridges yourself (I don't recommend it for beginners). But basically, the second register is exactly one octave lower than the third register. The first register should also be one octave lower than the second register. And the fourth register (right side of the yellow strings) is a forth higher than the 3rd register (left side of white strings). You see, it's quite confusing!

  • Salam Ostad,

  • @pejmool thankyou

  • Would you please give us some guidance on what should be the tune for Isfahan, Homayoun, Segaah, etc.

  • Dorood Ostad.

Is 440Hz for tuning in 'Shoor' ?

what about other 'Dastgah' e.g. Mahour and Homayoun ?

    tnx

  • @farshadiran021 440 Hertz baraye tamame dastgah ha estefadeh mishavad. Chon faghat janbeye mabda-e mokhtasati darad.

  • Ostad I have been tuning my Santur for a while now, your tutorial further confirmed what I was already doing (thanks again). However, when I play the Santur the notes sound "cheap", "impure" and "unnatural", especially note A/La (Koron)... what do you suggest is the problem? Would it help if I slightly move the kharaks from side to side?

  • @InnerflamesUnLtd

Good to hear that you are doing it right.

For koron, yes, you can move the kharak a little bit.

  • Finally a tuning video for the Santur. Thank you!

With regards to the Koron notes, I have set the CALIB at 427, however, should the indicator be centered at green? or elsewhere?

Also the note D (3rd 1 from the top) on the yellow strings in written in brackets in my notebook (Faramarz Payvar), what does this mean?

  • @InnerflamesUnLtd

Yes, after re-calibration to 427, the indicator should come to the middle.

It's in brackets because it should be tuned D semi-flat (koron).

  • @pejmool thanks, however the other Korons aren't in brackets.

  • @InnerflamesUnLtd

Then it could be just for emphasis. This book still has some little mistakes.

  • Great video! The idea of using a different reference tone for the quarter tones is a great idea, except that, one needs to use 425 HZ not 427. 427 Hz would give you an exact quarter tone (50 cents), but you need 60 cents off for Persian Music. All musicians using chromatic tuners must realize that persian half tones (80-90 cents) are smaller than chromatic half tones of 100 cents. Persian whole tones are often larger than 200 cents and are about 200-220 cents. See my videos for more detail.

  • @goodcyrus

Thank you for your comment. I think you are right in a sense that Persian quarter tones are not yet standardized. I am personally happy with the sound of an exact quarter tone (especially when creating chords), but I can fully appreciate that some musicians prefer a lower pitch for korons.

  • Hey thanks! Not all chromatic tuners can be referenced down to 427 or 425Hz. People may want to remember to buy the right type.

I have a video where i have generated each tone for each note beginning with C, D and A as ref tones for various instruments.

The tiny changes in intonation are like the main spices used in this music and make all the difference. Even untrained ears can tell there is a difference though they may not be able to tell where.

  • I have personally met with some of Persia's best musicians, played their instruments and recorded them for analysis. I found 2 famous names who shockingly used more tempered intervals very different from everybody else. On the other hand, try 220 cents whole tones, 80 cents half tones and 140 cents for 3/4 tones and you will see the difference. You'll sound more like Ebady all of a sudden.

  • @goodcyrus That's fantastic! Maybe you'd be able to answer my query. What is the cause of that destructive effect on Meshkatian's Tamanna?

  • Many thanks!

  • Hi, Your information looks great but i didnt understand at all. I know about the Korg tuner actually my freind got one. My Music school gave me santur and i have to tune it. I have no idea. I am guitar playeer. I need know the octave i have santur with 16 sets of 4 string in each set. Please let me know the notation. Thank you. I dont understand Persian other wise i might use your video help. Thank you

  • will you have more videos on how to tune a santoor? This is very valuable information with hardly anything else around about how to do this. I really appreciate this video thank you. One question I had is can you give me the chronological order of all the notes on a 9 bridge and a 12 bridge santoor? any help is appreciated

  • Thank you for your feedback.

In a 9 bridge santur, the sequence starts from E and ends in F (E-F-G-A-B-C-D-E-F). I never had a 12-bridge santur, but logically, it should be like this: E-F-G-A-B-C-D-E-F-G-A-B. It's up to you and depending on the system how to tune each note.

  • Ostad mamnoon , i searched all internet for such a video . I am lucky i found this.

Thanks alot for sharing ur time and knowledge with us.

  • Thank you so much ostaad! This was very helpful, specially the tip for tuning koron.

  • thanks so much for posting, I took a first stab at tuning my santour and I ripped one of my chords. Any suggestions in order to avoid this? thanks and merci

  • You're welcome. My suggestion is to start from white strings because they don't break easily. Also, make sure that when you are tuning G (third bridge in santur), you don't make it too tight. Thirdly, always have a good assessment of where your santur is at its normal state. If a santur has been tuned one tone lower than where it should be for a long time, bringing it up suddenly can be disasterous. Finally, I would recommend that where possible tune it first in front of an expert.

  • kheily mamnoon. this is very helpful.

  • how hard can it be for you and play each string individually????????????

  • Not at all.

  • can you show how each string sounds

  • There are tuners that produce each sound separately. If you really want to hear each note, I recommend that you buy one of those.
