What can i say, this is all about my youth, but also brought me more awareness of my suroundings in the wider world. Fun, culture serious, edge. Maestro. Gone never forgotten! Genius! Brilliant!!
Merchant told me that he had christened Maestro "Heels" because one night Maestro was performing at the Revue Tent, Princess building in POS and one of Maestro's heels came off and not for hell Maestro will somehow come off stage and/or take off the other shoe. Maestro was hopping up and down his whole performance the audience went wild seeing this short man hopping. He was encored a millions times and returned each time to give his heelless act, his act that night was better than de song!
foreignmovies, an insight bout me where Maestro is concerned. I was 13 when he died & I attending Diego Martin Jr. Sec. I told my mother she have to take me to his funeral or I was running away to go Princes Town. I did not know how to get there but I was going, my mother did not go to work that day evidently she knew that I was serious & she took me to de funeral. My father was there with other Calypsonians, this 13 yr old kid experienced alot at Maestro's funeral, recorded in my psyche.
I too grew up on St Thomas and remember my dad playing this album in the late 70's. What a great tune. I still feel the sadness I felt after hearing of Maestro's passing. I always remember his music having a different effect on me than other soca from that era. He was so far ahead of his contemporaries. Gone too soon.
my dad is from dominica, i grew up in st.thomas virgin islands and this is all my parents played in the late 70's and early 80's. this record brings back memories for sure, especially after he had his shot of rum with friends! lol.
Well, I have seen people in a bar enjoying this song after having imbibed.....with bottle and spoon and ting......there was something really sweet about it....so I guess maybe this is an "after a shot of rum with friends" type of song!!!
what a loss!!!!! if only we could have been blessed to have him here today but as it is said 'When the Master calls you have to answer' R.I.P. Maestro!!!!
I am not aTrinidadian but inna the 70s I used to listened to Maestro just like I used play a lot of Marley I called Maestro the Bob Marley of Trinidad
