"That long enough for ya, Jim?" said by a reporter is almost certainly a reference to Jim Healy, who had a sports radio show in LA and used to play tapes of Lasorda's other tirades. The reporters in the room obviously knew they were hearing the next tirade to go on Healy's show.
Towards the end there's a reference to the Dave Kingman tirade. The reporter says "What was your opinion..." and Lasorda says "Get the **** out of Joe". Funny stuff.
Uhhh, he did have a heart attack in 1996. That's why he stopped managing.
I think the c---sucker thing was kind of like how "douchebag" is the chosen putdown of today's society. Once it enters the venacular, it gets overused. Not til the 70s were gay putdowns used. Even during heated moments, attacking a guy's sexuality was trouble. Fag, dick milker, ass pirate, ball muncher, etc were heavy duty. Lasorda mostly stuck to F-bombs.
Hey tip26atx. He's 81 years old now. Still waiting for the heart attack I guess. If you have to wait 81 years for your first heart attack consider yourself lucky. Judging by the reporters laughter I don't think he is being totally serious. He's just having a little fun.
"The Nose" was the pen name for a columnist in the New York Daily News. When the Dodgers played the Yankees in the series (late 70's), The Nose ridiculed Lasorda in his column for basically being too gay by jumping up and down on the field when the Dodgers won, etc. The first part of this clip is Lasorda's response.
The 2nd part is the tail end of a diatribe after a game that the Dodgers lost because the other pitcher had no control but the Dodgers kept swinging at bad pitches anyway.
One the greatest Managers ever! Brooklyn would have loved him IF the Dodgers stayed. I wish I could find the video when he went crazy over a star actor who was on in the dug out during an All-Star game. He went ape shit!
somebody needs to post the clip from the all-star game when he went ass over tit on a foul ball. that was the funniest thing ever associated with Lasorda.
Tommy used to manage here in Albuquerqe in the minors before he went to the LA Dodgers in the majors. All the games I saw him coach here.. if my mom only knew....LOL
