I love the goal at 1:23 against the tiges, to have the composure after doing a full on sprint to assess if there was a team mate in a better position (great shepherd from Matty Liptak also), realising there wasn't, then screwing the ball around his body from the boundary line thru for a goal, there was something special about that. Got goal of the year in '95, I think it's underrated in the all time great goals.
badluck1986 - granted he was 23 in 1993, but im not quite sure the relevance that has to the facts. if you compare statistically to Ablett, lockett, Dunstall, take your pick on stats R league, he is the only player in AFL history to kick more than 125 goals in his first full season. His second season if you could 1992, as his first coming off the bench when hodges was injured. a hand full of times. Granted he was older than most, but that is due to him not even being sure about playing football.
he was good to watch probably been undersold as a full forward because he played in the era of lockett dunstall ablett probaly 3 of the top 5 goal kickers ever i do think shaun smith was as good if not slighty better at the big high mark
@willandshaylin2008 no way in the fucking world was shaun smith a better mark. if modra had played for a victorian club he would be remembered for the champion he is. he single handedly made the crows successful financially. ppl loved sitting down to watch modra take a screamer. the difference between shaun smith and modra was that modra could do it in a massive pack of players aswell.
He def had the biggest marks of all time.. Its just a pity that people in other states really have no comprehension of how good he was. Statistically as a full forward, he is the only player in AFL/VFL/SANFL history to have kicked more than 125 goals in his second season, a feat no one, including ablett senior, lockett, or dunstall achieved... yet friends in victoria and western australia have no knowledge of this.. He still kicks constant bags in the ammeteurs at age 40.
that goal against richmond was a cracker. gee footy was better when it was part-time and not full time. miss you mods darryl white and shaun smith lol
modra had more talent than anyone ive just about ever seen. Deserved a premiership medallion and it was a real shame that the knee injury in the 97 prelim robbed him of his peak years in footy.
I'm a Bombers fan, but I have to say, along with James Hird, Modra was one of my all time favourites growing up, and to this day he still is. Absolute champion.

Also, love the commentary from Bruce as always!

I miss this style of play where centres and half-forward would bomb it to the goal square and hope for something spectacular.

@manderovickolekcija I'm not denying the facts but Modra was in his mid 20's in 1993 and a seasoned footy player despite his very late draught.

An absolute tragedy that he never got a premiership medal. I hope he knows that he is the reason we got there in 97.

What an absolute freak this guy was/is.
I adored him as a kid and even had his video which I watched tonnes of times.
The game hasn't seen anyone like him since with BOTH the natural spring and raw goal kicking talent.
I agree that is easily one of the best goals in history.
Great vid!

Russell Robertson would be similar in terms of being good at both leaping and goal kicking, although just not as great as Modra.
